قُمْ غيرَ معتذرٍ ولا متثاقلِ

فاقصص معي أثر الخليطِ الزائلِ

Rise without excuse or reluctance

And narrate with me the trace of the fleeting blend

واسمح بأحلَى نومتيك لساهرٍ

شُفِعتْ أواخر ليله بأوائلِ

And allow my sweetest sleep for one awake

Whose late night was interceded by early dawn

قَلقِ الوسادِ يسوم بيعةَ غابن

من صبره ويرومُ نُصرةَ خاذلِ

The anxiety of the pillow plots against the deceived one

Who shows patience, yet seeks vengeance on the betrayer

إركب وطاوِلْ فوق كُورِك علَّها

أن تُرْفَعَ الأحداجُ للمتطاولِ

Mount and tower over your peaks, perhaps

The summits will be raised for the ambitious one

وإذا لحِقتَ وقصَّرتْ بي ناقتي

والثّقل ما بي ما يُقَصِّر حاملي

If you catch up while my she-camel lags

And the burden, not its bearer, causes the lag

فقل السلامُ ومن تباريح الجوى

بعثُ القتيلِ تحيةً للقاتلِ

Say “Peace”, and from the ruins let the slain

Send regards to the killer

ومن الغوارب في الخدور مسلَّط

تَمضِي قضيَّتُه وليس بعادلِ

Of the rough seas within anchored ships commanded

By fate, though unjustly ruled

لقِنَ النفارَ من الغزالة واحتذَى

لَيَّ العهودِ من القضيبِ المائلِ

Take heed from the gazelles and follow

The treaties of the leaning spear

وجد القضاء وطال عمرُ مِطالهِ

أنّ البلية بالمليِّ الماطلِ

Fate came and prolonged the days of its delays

That affliction lies with the procrastinator

يا سعدُ أحرِزْها يداً مذخورةً

تُولِي أخاً قمِناً بشكر النائلِ

O Saad! Take precautions with a guarded hand

That turns a close comrade with gratitude to the giver

إن كنتَ فاتَك يومَ رامةَ نُصرتي

فتغنَّم الأخرى ببُرقَةِ عاقلِ

If the day of my triumphant aid eluded you

Then make use of the next with the wisdom of the reasonable

ما قام عنك المجدُ أن خلّيتني

والدمعَ أو أسلمتني للعاذلِ

Glory did not abandon you when I left

And tears, or when I surrendered to the blamer

ولقد رأيتَ فهل رأيتَ كموقفٍ

بالنّعفِ يُلبَسُ حقُّه بالباطلِ

And indeed you saw, so did you see a situation

Where truth is clothed with falsehood?

وعلى النقا من خالفاتِ مَهَا النقا

بمؤزَّرٍ فَعْمٍ وخصرٍ جائلِ

And the spears of , equipped with armors, belts and swinging swords

Whose strikes mimic the fall of arrows and fingers

ودَّعننَا بمخضَّباتٍ وقْعُها

وقعُ السهام تموَّهتْ بأناملِ

Youth bid farewell, when it was time for them

Out of envy for them over departing beauty

نصَلَ الشبابُ ولات حين أوانه

حسداً لهنّ على الخضاب الناصلِ

They were distracted except for a stealthy glance

That ignites passion, or a subtle wink

وصددن إلاَّ نظرةً من خالسٍ

تُذكِي الجوَى أو لفتةً من قابلِ

As for what they entrusted, none but protectors

The day they left, saying nothing but farewell

وأمَا وما استُودِعنَ غيرَ حوافظٍ

يومَ الفراقِ وقُلنَ غيرَ فواعلِ

And their talk, it echoes

If it echoes, like rain pouring from saturated clouds

وحديثهِنَّ فإنّه بلَّ الصدى

إن بَلَّه ماءُ السحابِ الهاطلِ

They moved away, so I did not endeavor to join them

To protect them, or spend the night with someone who reconciles

لقد انتأين فما سعيتُ لهاجرٍ

حفظاً لهنَّ ولا أويتُ لواصلِ

You blame me for utmost loyalty to you

Oh distant voice, saying: who is the sayer?

أَعَلَى الوفاءِ بكلِّ فيك تلومني

يا بُعدَ صوتِك قائلاً من قائلِ

And it would be hard for me to presume

To nullify when protectors have unraveled my ropes

ومِن التجشُّم أن ترومَ بِحطّة

نقضي وقد فتَلَ الحِفاظُ حبائلي

And this green one transfers its gray hair

Closer to diminishing my merits

ولَهذِه الخضراءُ تَنقُلُ شُهبَها

أدنى عليك من انتقاصِ فضائلي

I am one whom you knew long ago and recently

With certainty of knowledge, though ignorant of inquiries

أنا من علمتَ قديمَه وحديثَه

علمَ اليقينِ وإن جهلتَ فسائلِ

Rise, O kings, and pitch my soul its tents

Be successful in my latter and early days

قَومي الملوكُ وخِيمُ نفسي خِيمُها

أفلِحْ بمثل أواخري وأوائلي

My disobedience in a leader’s council does not harm

Unless with a quiver or arrows

ما ضَرَّ عِيصِي في أرومِة فارسٍ

ألّا يكونَ بخِندفٍ أو وائلِ

We are the just governors, though our traces

Were the adornment of stalled time

نحن الولاة العادلون ولم تزل

آثارُنا حَلْيَ الزمانِ العاطلِ

When people were devoid of our leadership

Wolves crept on unsettled packs

ذُدنا فمذ عدِمَ الأنامُ رِعاءَنا

عَدَتِ الذئابُ على السَّوامِ الهاملِ

Through us the world was civilized, so excuse its

Silversmithing, and the life of its vain youth

عمُرت بنا الدنيا ففَضَّةُ عُذرها

فينا وعمرُ شبابِها المتخايلِ

Crowns smile over our heads

Above every bright-faced crescent-bearded one

تتبسّم التيجانُ فوق رءوسنا

عن كلّ وضَّاح الجبينِ حُلاحلِ

Like the moon permitting greetings, so when it rises

The weapons of a valiant lion shine

كالبدر يأذَنُ للسلامِ فإن سطا

لِيثَ السلاحُ بوجهِ أشوسَ باسلِ

Whoever counts himself, his pride and tribe

We have traces competing with his

من عَدَّ نفساً فخرَه وقبيلَه

فلنا أَثَارُة فخره المتقابلِ

And in our remainder is the sweetness of Sood

That shows you some lost favor

وعلى بقيّتنا طلاوةُ سؤددٍ

تُهدِي لعينك فائتاً من حاصلِ

So when opponents contend over their glories

The proof of our glory appears completely

فإذا الخصوم تجادلوا في مجدهم

ظهرَت دلالةُ مجدنا في كاملِ

This garden from that clouds' shadow

And light from that fading flame

ذا الروضُ من ذاك الغمامِ المنجلي

والنُّورُ من ذاك الشهاب الآفلِ

And if you lose the sun, deputize its light

With a likeness of the moon, or its resemblance

وإذا عدِمتَ الشمسَ فاقض لنورها

بمَشابهٍ للبدرِ أو بمَخايلِ

They carried favors, so he fulfilled them

The sturdy forearm’s rope untied from shoulders

حملَ المكارمَ عنهُمُ فوفَى بها

عَبلَ الذراعِ متينَ حبلِ الكاهلِ

Awake, kept so by rights when night of

Ingratitude falls on the eyelids of the stingy

يقظان تُسهِره الحقوقُ إذا دجا

ليلُ العُقوقِ على جفونِ الباخلِ

He knew time, so he did not leave in his day

Any urgent matter, upholding the late

عَرفَ الزمانَ فلم يدَعْ في يومه

من عاجلٍ مستظهراً للآجلِ

His manners flow in his veins

And on pipelines, the worker's dependence

تجرِي خلائقُه على أعراقِه

وعلى الأنابيبِ اعتمادُ العاملِ

And he doubts goodness unless he finds

In it, good assumption’s gain of the hopeful

ويسيء ظنّاً باللُّها ما لم يجد

فيها إصابةَ حسنِ ظنِّ الآملِ

He spread civility after its name was forgotten

Flying, and lauded dormant geniality

نشر المروءةَ بعد أن نُسِيَ اسمُها

طيّاً ونوّه بالسماح الخاملِ

He owned the horizon, so he flowed without a messenger

And contained the dew, quenching without a dispute

ملك المدى فجرى بغير مراسِلٍ

وحوى الندى فسقى بغير مساجِلِ

He fulfilled, so he was called: “Loyal”, and sometimes

Nicknames fall as attributes to evasive meanings

ووفى فقيل أبو الوفاء وربما

تقعُ الكُنَى صفةً لمعنىً حائلِ

So if you knock, it is the night of a grateful guest

And if you seek refuge, it is the day of inclusive safety

فإذا طرَقْت فليلُ ضيفٍ شاكرٍ

وإذا استجرت فيومُ أمنٍ شاملِ

And if he speaks, his good news tells of his gifts

The murmur is known in front of an inquiring valley

وإذا تحدَّث بِشرُه بنواله

عُرِفَ الخريرُ أمامَ وادٍ سائلِ

His manners were sipped, between exhilarated

Or mellow with inclination

شُرِبَتْ خلائقُه فبين مُجَدَّلٍ

سكرانِ أو ثَمِلٍ بها متمايلِ

As if the pouring of a mixed drink

In a cup, from his manners and traits

فكأنّ صِرفَ شَمولةٍ مسكوبةٍ

في الكأس من خُلُقٍ له وشمائلِ

He took on leadership, rising to its conditions

Heavy upon the carrier’s neck

حمل الرياسةَ ناهضاً بشروطها

وهي الثقيلة في فَقارِ الحاملِ

No heretic’s argument stood when he prevailed

Angry at the injustice of fate, disputing

ما كان لما ساد حجَّةَ مُلحدٍ

غضبانَ في جَوْر القضاء مجادلِ

His blessings did not come with misguided sustenance

Or a share that strays and does not know

لم تأتِ نِعمتُه برزقٍ غالطٍ

ضلَّ الطريقَ ولا بحظٍّ جاهلِ

But descended in the field of a grateful one

Who did not cease to recognize the sender

لكنها نزلَتْ بساحةِ شاكرٍ

لم يألُ معرفةً لحقِّ النازلِ

Your pens recoiled, by the rule

Banished by the stabbing of sharp blades

أقلامُك ارتَجعتْ بواسطَ دولةً

طُرِدتْ بوخزِ أسنّةٍ ومَناصلِ

They were rescued by your opinion, from the talons of oppressors

Whose jaws tore with counterparts

نُشِلت برأيك من بَراثِنِ ضيغمٍ

تَفْرِي الشَّوَى أنيابُه بمَعابِلِ

Passionate, never hearing an inhibiting cry

Or humbled by the shout of a reminiscent one

طَيَّانَ لم يَسمَعْ لهتفهِ زاجرٍ

يوماً ولم يخشع لصيحةِ ثاكلِ

They were like the claws of his right hand, so you returned them

The sister of the nebula, from the hand of one reaching

كانت كقابِ يمينهِ فرددتَها

أختَ المجرَّة من يد المتناولِ

Ask about your Sowod, besides it, so the swords recoiled

And did not gain by a formidable opponent

سَلُّوا سُعودَك دونها فتراجعت

عنها السيوفُ وما حَظِينَ بطائلِ

Between that, many flags surrendered

Were it not for you, glory and broken swords

كم بين ذلك من لواءٍ ناكسٍ

لولاك عزَّ ومن حسامٍ ناكلِ

Men envied your ascendance, so increase as they increase

And forgive, for none envied you but the wise

حَسَدَ الرجالُ عُلاك فازددْ يزددوا

واعذِر فلم يحسُدك غيرُ العاقلِ

They carried while generosity appeared through you

And perhaps the young man is silent while the voice is the attainer’s voice

حَملوا وبانَ بك السماحُ وربّما

سكَتَ الفتى والصوتُ صوتُ النائلِ

They made the countries into a treasure for the covetous

And you made your money into food for the eaters

جعلوا البلادَ ذخيرةً للمقتني

وجعلتَ مالَك طُعمةً للآكلِ

The hand of the giver lofted while the receiver’s

Pride stumbled, and the ego of the obtainer

شمخَتْ يدُ المعطِي وتاهَ بأنفهِ

عُجْبَ المنيل وزهوَ نفس الباذلِ

And you bent your side to the destitute in humility

Until you were like a beggar asking the beggar

وألنتَ جنبَك للعُفاة تواضعاً

حتى كأنك سائلٌ للسائلِ

I am one whose heart you settled in, emptying it

So you settled in a homeland madly in love with you

أنا من سَكنتَ فؤادَه متخلِّياً

فسكنتَ في وطنٍ بحبك آهلِ

And possessed it with unconditional love

Not earned by obligatory or voluntary charity

وملكتَه بمودّةٍ لم تُكتَسبْ

بفرائضٍ في الجودِ أو بنوافلِ

And you called it, so the Lord of sincerity answered

A kindred spirit, who found none as sincere as you

ودعوتَه فأجابَ ربُّ نوافرٍ

وَحشٍ صوادفَ عن سواك عوادلِ

No greed drove it, nor did zeal for your presence

Hasten it like the arrival of a caravan

لم يُجرِه طمعٌ ولم تَقدَمْ به

حِرصاً على جدواك أوبةُ قافلِ

Except the love of kinship, and caring for in-law relations

Tightened between me and you

إلا هوَى القُربَى ورَعيُ وشائجٍ

بيني وبينك أُحْكِمتْ ووصائلِ

And if I describe you, it is a description of my virtues

And if I praise you, it is praise of my tribes

وإذا وصفتك فهو وصفُ محاسني

وإذا مدحتُك فهو مدحُ قبائلي

And it is more right that I divert praise to its cause

Than wearing a garment while devoid of meaning

وأحقُّ من صغتُ الثناءَ لجيدِهِ

من لستُ إن لبِسَ الحُلِيَّ بعاطلِ

And poetry to you is the slightest of my means

In what I seek, and most subtle of my methods

والشعرُ عندك من أقلِّ ذرائعي

فيما أروم ومن أدقّ وسائلي

I have certainly recoiled the horses of men from it

And raised it above every afflicted house

ولقد ذَعَرتُ عن الرجال سَوامَهُ

ورفعتُه عن كلِّ بيتٍ نازلِ

And prevented it as the jealous man prevents his daughters

From sullying its chastity with immoralities

ومنعتُه منعَ الغيورِ بناتَهُ

من أن أدنِّس صَوْنه بمبَاذلِ

And I was careful to extract its core, delving deeply

While people skim above the coast

وأثَرتُ جوهرَ بحره متعمِّقا

والناسُ يحتشُّون فوق الساحلِ

So listen to your share from it, and toss the rest

And if you listen, then compare to it and parallel

فاسمع لحظِّك منه وانبِذْ غيرَهُ

وإذا سمعتَ فقِسْ عليه وماثِلِ

I have praised, so I was the most truthful sayer

And you acted, so you were the noblest doer

ولقد مدحتُ فكنتُ أصدقَ قائلٍ

وفعلتَ أنتَ فكنتَ أكرمَ فاعلِ

And perhaps your glory disdains, so I sufficed

With you, pasturing away from every withering valley

ولعلّ مجدَك أن يَغارَ فأكتفى

بك معشِباً عن كلّ وادٍ ذابلِ

And perhaps your palm disdains to overflow its streams

So I sufficed from seeds for them, and methods

ولعلّ كفَّك أن يَفيضَ غديرُها

فأعِزَّ عن نُطَفٍ لهم ووشائلِ

Many generous men unlike you exist

Who grew fat under the emaciating conditions I carried

كم من كرامٍ ليس مثلُك فيهمُ

قد أسمنوا تحت الجُدوبِ هَوَاملي

And endured them lightly, their hands bearing

Burdens placed on my weary arms

وتحمّلوا متخفِّفين بحَملِها

كُلَفِي على أيدٍ عليّ ثقائلِ

And I reckon that you walk their path

And sincerely emulate men in disposition

وإخالُ أنك سالكٌ بي سُبْلَهُم

وغدت بصدقٍ في الرجال مَخايلي

The Nayrooz crescent heralded your coming

Bearing regards from a beloved reconciler

صبَحَتْك بالنيروز غُرّةُ قادمٍ

حملَ التحيّةَ من حبيبٍ واصلِ

A day that loved attending the drink of dew

So it came to you in a delegation of abundant praise

يومٌ أَحبَّ حضورَ أنديةِ الندَى

فأتاك في وفدِ الثناءِ الحافلِ

Declaring its superiority to you in Persia

And its enduring, towering right

يُدلي إليك بفضله في فارسٍ

وبحقّه المتقادم المتطاولِ

And dispraising you in a thousand days like it

In glory - its years witness the next

ويُذِمُّ فيك بألفِ يومٍ مثلهِ

في العزّ يشهدُ عامُها بالقابلِ

Your generosity made it compete, describing life

And vegetation, to the barren, malnourished land

أعداه جودُك فاحتبى يصف الحيا

والعُشبَ للبلد الجديبِ الماحلِ

It outran Spring, so it was the luckiest guide

And it recounted prosperity, so it was the most truthful conveyor

سَبقَ الربيعَ فكان أيمنَ رائدٍ

وحكى الصلاحَ فكان أصدقَ ناقلِ

It met you as something new like its name

So wear it, and meet good fortune and requite

وافاك مقتبلاً جديداً كاسمِهِ

فالبَسْه والقَ به السُّعودَ وقابلِ

And spur on time, keeping pace with its days

In blessings, grace, and heedless living

واطوِ الزمانَ مساوقا أيامَه

في نعمةٍ فُضُلٍ وعيشٍ غافلِ
