في كلِّ دارٍ عدوٌّ لي أقاذعُهُ

وعاذلٌ أتّقيه أو أصانعُهُ

In every house there is an enemy of mine whom I placate,

And a reproacher whom I seek to avoid or appease.

وآمرٌ بسلوّ لا يطاوعني

قلبي عليه وناهٍ لا أطاوعُهُ

And one who commands decorum which I do not obey,

My heart resists it though my appearance acquiesces.

يعيا بوجدي ولم يحمل بكاهله

ثِقلي ولا ضمنت قلبي أضالعُهُ

He grieves for my passion yet does not shoulder my burden,

Nor comfort my heart though my ribs are his lodging.

كأنني أوّل العشاق طال له

مغنى الأحبّةِ وارفضّت مدامعُهُ

It's as if I'm the first of lovers whose longing was prolonged,

Whose tears were rejected though plentiful.

عابوا وفائي لمن أهوى وقد علموا

أن الخيانة ذنبٌ لا أواقعُهُ

They fault my loyalty to she whom I love, yet they know

That betrayal is a sin that I do not commit.

وهل تصح لمأمونٍ أمانتُهُ

يوماً إذا الحبّ لم تُحفظْ ودائعُهُ

How can trust be sound for one like me

If love's secrets are not kept and pledges not honored?

نعم وقفتُ على الأطلال أسألها

ما كلّ مستخبَرٍ تُصغي مسامعُهُ

Yes, I stood at the ruins asking about times past,

Though not every inquirer has attentive ears.

وقد يجيبك وحياً مَن تخاطبه

وتفهم القولَ ممن لا تراجعُهُ

And sometimes one you address answers you

And you understand the words of one you do not see.

وما رجوتُ بذات البان من سفهٍ

دنوَّ من شَسَعت عني شواسعُهُ

I have not been tempted by foolishness

To approach those who spurn me.

وما وقفتُ لبدرٍ غاب أطلبه

جهلاً ولكن شفَتْ عيني مطالعُهُ

I did not stand to seek a vanished full moon,

Only for my eyes to catch its rising.

وكلّ من فقد الأحبابَ ناظرهُ

مُسرَّحُ الطرفِ في الآثار نافعُهُ

And all who lose their loved ones, their eyes

Roam the remnants seeking benefit.

وفي الظعائن خلاّبٌ بموعده

خَلاَبةَ البرق لم تصدُقْ لوامعُهُ

The lightning in the clouds coquettishly keeps its tryst,

Unbelieved by its brilliant flashes.

مقنَّعٌ لُثُمُ الأبطال يحدِرُها

ذليلةً ما تواريه مَقانعُهُ

A lion cloaked in valor humbles them,

Though garments hide his might from view.

ظبي يصدّ عن المرعى النفوسَ فقد

صارت حمىً بالدم الجاري مراتعُهُ

A gazelle who denies the meadow to other souls,

For the blood he spills has made it his pasture.

لا يُقتَضَى عنده ثأرٌ ولا تِرَةٌ

ولا يُعاب بجبنٍ من يقارعُهُ

No vengeance or feud is sought against him,

Nor is one who challenges him called a coward.

إن شاء أنكر أوإن شاء معترفاً

بالقتل لم يتعسَّفْه توابعُهُ

If he wishes, he denies; if he wishes, he admits

To the murder - his followers do not transgress.

وكيف يَجحدُ قتلاه إذا شهدت

خدّاه بالدمِ أو باحت أصابعُهُ

How can he deny killings when his cheeks

Bare witness with blood or fingers betray him?

يا تاركي مَثلاً في الناس منتشراً

تدور شائعةً فيهم وشائعُهُ

O you who have set an example amongst people becoming widespread,

Circulating amongst them while its source is hidden.

ما سلّط اللّه أجفاني على جلَدي

إلا ومحفوظُ سِرّي فيك ضائعُهُ

God has not empowered my eyelids against myself,

Except that my secret is lost in you.

من أحدثَ الغدرَ دِيناً فاستننت به

ومن أباحتك تعذيبي شرائعُهُ

The one who made betrayal a duty that I emulated

And whose laws allowed you to torment me.

بلى هو الدهر مفطورٌ خلائقهُ

على الفساد ومجبولٌ طبائعُهُ

Yes, it is fate, twisted are its creatures

To corruption, evil woven into their nature.

أما ترى مَلِكَ الأملاك خاونه

عبيدُه وعتت كفراً صنائعُهُ

Do you not see kings betrayed by their slaves,

As their works are defiled with blasphemy?

ثعالبٌ تتعاوى ساقَها وَعِلٌ

لضيغمٍ لم تزعزعه زعازعُهُ

Foxes conspiring together, while lions

Are not perturbed from their steadfastness.

ما قمت تزأرُ منها واحداً صَمَداً

إلا وجبَّار ذاك الجمعِ خاشعُهُ

I have not roared against them without seeing

The defiant of that group grow meek.

رأوا ولاءَك وسماً في جباههِمُ

فذُلُّهم لك إن عزُّوا طوابعُهُ

They saw your loyalty as a mark on their brows,

So their humility to you, if proud, is their nature.

من كلّ قلبٍ قسا والرقّ يخصمه

حتى يرقَّ ونعماكم تنازعُهُ

Every hardened heart that is contested by tenderness

Eventually softens; your gifts contend over it.

وكيف تَعصِي رقابٌ أنت مالكها

مِلك اليمين وسيفٌ أنت طابعُهُ

How can necks you own disobey you

When you own them by right and your sword imprints them?

وهل هباتك يبغيها مغالبةً

من أنت واهبُه أو أنت بائعُهُ

Does one conquered request your gifts?

Since you are the giver or seller.

عادوا وبَسطةُ أيديهم تثقِّلُها

أغلالُ مَنِّكَ فيها أو جوامعُهُ

They returned while your hands burden theirs,

Shackled by your favors or collectivized.

يرعون ما أثمر البغيُ الذي غرسوا

والبغيُ معروفَة العقبى مَصارعُهُ

They pasture what the tyranny they planted bears fruit,

While the fruit of tyranny is known to perish.

يلوذ بالعفو منهم كلُّ ذي شَممٍ

بأنفه بأسك المحذور جادعُهُ

Every unrighteous person seeks your pardon,

Fearing your might that dissuades the disputed.

وحسب عاصيك ذلّاً إذ صفحتَ له

عن الجريرة أن الذلَّ شافعُهُ

Sufficient disgrace for your disobedient is your pardon

Of his crime, since humiliation intercedes for him.

وأنت كالسيف لم ينضُبْ بصفحته

ماءُ الفرندِ ولم تَثلَمْ مَقاطعُهُ

You are like an unblunted sword that does not

Tire of forgiveness or lose its sharpness.

راموك واللّه رامٍ دون ما طلبوا

وهل يفرَّقُ شملٌ وهو جامعُهُ

They wanted you while God wanted otherwise,

Can a group be separated when you unify it?

عوائدٌ لك تجري في كَفالتهِ

لا يجبرُ اللّه عظماً أنت صادعُهُ

Customs run through your guarantee,

God does not mend what you have broken.

كم قبل ذلك من فتقٍ مُنيتَ به

واللّه من حيث يخفى عنك راقعُهُ

How many times before this were you blessed

With openings where the exit had narrowed?

ضاقت جوانبه واشتد مخرجُهُ

وأنت فيه رحيبُ الصدر واسعُهُ

While you were spacious of chest and broad of extent

As it tightened around you and its escape constricted.

ردّاً إليه وتسليماً لقدرته

فيما تحاوله أو ما تدافعُهُ

Submitting and surrendering to His will

In what you undertake and defend against it.

فهبْ عبيدَك للمعطيك طاعتَهم

فأنت في العفو عن عاصيك طائعُهُ

So indulge your servants to the Giver of their obedience,

Since you obey by pardoning those who disobey.

واعطف عليهم فهم أنصارُ دولتكم

ببأسهم كلُّ خصم أنت قامعُهُ

And show kindness to them for they are the supporters of your state,

Vanquishing every opponent you subdue.

يا من إذا قال هل في الأرض من ملكٍ

سواي لم يَرَ مخلوقاً ينازعُهُ

O He who when asked, "Is there a king except me?"

Sees no challenger disputing Him.

من مات من قومك الصيد الكرام فقد

أحياه ذكرُك وابتلّت مضاجعُهُ

Those of your people who died hunting are alive

In your memory while their resting places are flooded.

ومن على الأرض منهم سيّدٌ ملكٌ

فأنت خافضُهُ أو أنت رافعُهُ

Those alive in your realm, the noble lords,

You debase or raise as you please.

اللّه سربلكم بالملك مَصلحةً

للعالمين فمن ذا عنك نازعُهُ

God has clothed you with kingship for the benefit

Of all worlds - so who contends with you over it?

وهل يقوَّضُ بيتٌ من رجالكم

عمادُه وبأيديكم مَجامعُهُ

Can a house of your men collapse,

Its pillars and foundations in your hands?

فركنُ دولتكم بالأمس أوّلُهُ

وأنت يا ركنَ دينِ اللّه رابعُهُ

The pillar of your state yesterday was its first,

While you, O pillar of God's faith, are its fourth.

مات الملوكُ على عصيانهم كمداً

به فكاتمُ داءٍ أو مذايعُهُ

Kings have died implementing their disobedience,

Concealing an illness or spreading its infection.

تمضي على حكمه الأفلاكُ دائرةً

فكلّ سعد جرى فيهن طالعُهُ

The heavens cycle according to His judgment,

So whatever fortune runs its course.

وكنتَ سيفَهُمُ والمجدُ مرهِفُهُ

صقلاً وتاجَهُمُ والفخرُ راصعُهُ

You were their sword, glory its scabbard,

Polished, with the crown and pride its hilt.

أجراهُمُ والقنا كابٍ وأكرمَهم

يداً إذا جُودهُم سالت ينابعُهُ

You honored them, and the spear in hand thrust,

Your hands, when they gave generously, its springs flowed.

ما أبحُرُ الأرض من بحرٍ تمدّ به

إلى العفاة يداً إلا رَواضعُهُ

What sea on earth extends to the destitute through you

A hand except what you extend?

وكلّ رزقٍ ترى الأقدارَ ضيّقةً

به فعندك مسناةٌ وسائعُهُ

And any provision the fates constrict

Is plentiful with you, your range vast.

كأن مالَكَ شخصٌ أنت مبغضُهُ

فأنت مقصيه بالجدوى وقاطعُهُ

As if your wealth were an enemy you hate

So you deprive it of benefit and cut it off.

آثار جودك فيمن أنت منهضُهُ

آثارُ بطشك فيمن أنت صارعُهُ

Vestiges of your generosity are upon those you raise,

Vestiges of your tyranny upon those you slay.

إن شمت وجهَكَ راقتنا روائقه

أو شمت سيفك راعتنا روائعُهُ

If you unsheathe your face, our souls find peace,

Or unsheathe your sword, our souls are awed.

فلا قرارَ لمالٍ أنت باذلُهُ

ولا انزعاجَ لثغرٍ أنت مانعُهُ

No fixed wealth you spend,

No sealed lips you prevent from speaking.

تضجُّ باسمك ما قامت منابرُهُ

على الرشاد وماضلَّتْ صوامعُهُ

Pulpits proclaim your name, guiding

Or misguided in their zealotry.

حتى ترى الشرك والإيمان ما اختلفا

مُلكاً وما الفَلَك الدوّار قاطعُهُ

Until you see no difference between faiths,

No reign the turning sky interrupts.

موحّد الملك لا تُدعَى بتثنيةٍ

إلا بنيك وشبلُ الليث تابعُهُ

Uniter of dominion, none describes you dual

Except your sons, as lion cubs follow.

كواكبٌ تستمدُّ النورَ من قمرٍ

على جبينك ساريه وساطعُهُ

Stars drawing light from the moon

Upon your brow, spreading and luminous.

فلا خَلتْ أبداً منها مواضعُها

من السماء ولا منه مواضعُهُ

Never emptying their positions in the sky

Nor it of them.

وزارك المدحُ في أبهى معارضِهِ

مطرَّزاً باسمك العالي وشائعُهُ

Eulogies visit you in most eloquent ode,

Embroidered with your exalted name made public.

يختال بين يدَيْ نعماك مائسُهُ

حُسناً ويستعبرُ الأنفاسَ رادعُهُ

It struts before your gifts taking pride

In its elegance, restraining tired breaths.

من كلّ عذراء مخلوعٍ إذا برزتْ

فيها العذارُ وما إن ليم خالعُهُ

Of every alluring coquette once modesty departs her,

And refusal no longer deters the wanton.

يستوقف الراكبُ الغادي لحاجتِهِ

فيلفت الرأسَ أو تُلوَى أخادعُهُ

The rider halts the passerby for his need,

Turning his head or twisting his eyebrows.

يستقصر المنشدُ التالي طوائلَها

كأنّ أبياتَ ما يَروِي مَصارِعُهُ

The singer finds its long verses too short,

As if the lines he recites have narrow endings.

مستصعبات على الراقي أراقمُها

إلا الذي أنا حاويه وخادعُهُ

Its intricate rhymes seem difficult to the aspiring poet

Except one like me who grasps and masters them.

يأتي على الصدّ منكم والملالِ لها

وصلٌ يواليه أو شوقٌ ينازعُهُ

One visits you bored and tired of them

Only for a connection to succeed it or longing to seize him.

ما إن رأت قبلكم فيمن يتاجركم

تجارةَ الجودِ من خاست بضائعُهُ

Before you no traders in the commerce of generosity

Fell short in their goods and assets.

والمهرجانُ بأن تُرعى وسائلُهُ

منها جديرٌ وأن تزكو ذَرائعُهُ

As for celebrations, some means are condoned

If deemed appropriate, and some channels endorsed.

ذاك الرجاءُ لهذا اليومِ منتظِرٌ

فاصنع بحكم العلا ما أنت صانعُهُ

That hope awaits this day watching,

So act judiciously in what you undertake.

واعلم لك المجلس المعمور ساجدُهُ

يعنو لوجهك إعظاماً وراكعُهُ

And know the thronged council bows before you,

Prostrating in exaltation and kneeling in awe.

أني بقيتُ لهذا الشعر مُذعِنة

آياتُهُ ليَ وحدي أو بدائعُهُ

I have remained compliant to this poetry,

Its wonders for me alone or in its uniqueness.

وإن سمعتَ بشيء لستُ قائلَه

فلا تعرِّجْ على ما أنت سامعُهُ

If you hear something I did not say,

Do not doubt what you heard.
