بدينك بعد ما انفرق الجميعُ

أتصبر أم يروعك ما يروعُ

With you after everyone parted

Shall I be patient or startled by what startles

تداعوا بالنوى فسمعت صوتاً

يودّ عليه لو صَمَّ السميعُ

They called with purpose so I heard a voice

That would bid farewell if the keen of hearing departed

وزمّوها مسنَّمةً بِطاناً

تغصُّ بها النمارقُ والقُطوعُ

And they saddled it, a she-camel worn out

That would carry victuals and cut up pieces

حواملَ كلَّ ما شكت المطايا

ولكن كلَّ ما شكر الضجيعُ

Bearers of all that riding-beasts complained of

While all that the sleeper thanked remained

تكلِّفها الحُداةُ ببطن خَبتٍ

من الأحداج ما لا تستطيعُ

The yearlings burden it with a pregnant belly

That cannot carry more than it's able

إذا ما خفَّ أو نهض النواجي

مشت منها الحسيرةُ والظليعُ

If the young camels walked gently or got up

The worn out and wretched walked away from it

وفي الأظعان متَّهمٌ بريءٌ

بنخوته ومحفوظٌ مُضيعُ

And among the camels is an innocent blamed

Haughty yet protected, led astray

ومنتفضٌ كنانتَه بنجدٍ

له بالغور مقتنَص صريعُ

And a balking one shaking its neck with vigor

For it in the valley a fallen one lies

ومن سِرّ العشيرة من مَعَدّ

مكانَ النجم باذلةٌ منوعُ

And of the clan's secret, from Ma'add

In place of a star, a devoted one, diverse

عصيُّ الرِّدفِ ليّنة التثنّي

تقسَّمَ خصرَها شِبعٌ وجوعُ

Disobedient of butt, soft of bending

Both satiety and hunger split its waist

إذا سئلت فرامحةٌ زبونٌ

وإن وعدت فخالبةٌ لموعُ

If asked, Framhoza is obedient

And if promised, Khaliba is most observant

جرى بهمُ أشيُّ فعبّ بحر

حمولُهُمُ سفائنُه القُلوعُ

An oryx passed them so the sea foamed

Its ships, their crumbled carriers

غوارب فارتجعت إليَّ طَرفي

يناشد ذا الأراكِ متى الطلوعُ

My eyes roamed about so I called on the owner of the herself

To ask when will the rising be

ألا هل والمنَى سفَهٌ وحلمٌ

وصادقةٌ تسرّك أو خَدوعُ

Isn't aspiration misguided and dream

Sincere to make you happy or cheat?

لظمآنٍ ببابلَ من سبيلٍ

إلى الماء الذي كتم البقيعُ

To a thirsty one in Babylon from a road

To the water the tank concealed

وبانات على إضمٍ رِواء

سقاها كأسَ نُخبته الربيعُ

And females bending over a hill

The spring served the cup of its choose

تقوّدها الصَّبا غصناً لغصنٍ

فتعصي في المَقادة أو تُطيعُ

The breeze kindles them, branch after branch

So they disobey or obey in the leading

ترنَّمُ فوقها وُرْق العشايا

لمغتبقٍ سلافتُهُ الدموعُ

Over it murmurs the foliage of the arfaj

For one laughing, his saliva tears

يظنّ الغادرون بكاي خُرقاً

وأن وفايَ بعدهُمُ خضوعُ

The dishonest think I'm torn

And being faithful after them is subdued

وليس وإنما زمنٌ تولَّى

بغُرّبَ ما لفائته رجوعُ

But no, it is a time that took

The far to where return is denied

وعهد ضاع بين يدي وخصمي

وما يرعاه مثلي لا يضيعُ

And a covenant was lost between my hands and opponent

The like of me doesn't neglect what is lost

وقبلكمُ صعبت على المَلاوِي

فطار عن النزاع بِيَ النزوعُ

And before you, craving was hard on singers

So desire to compete departed from me

ومرَّتْ سلوة بصُدوعِ قلبي

فمات الداء والتأمَ الصدوعُ

And solace passed sore breasts

So the disease died, and hope for recovery ceased

وهمٍّ قد قريتُ فبات عندي

له الوجناءُ والعطن الشريعُ

And a care I housed so by me remains

For it soft moan and putrid stench

أضمُّ صرامةً جنبيَّ منه

على أضعافِ ما تسعُ الضلوعُ

I restrain my severity toward it

To exceeds what ribs can contain

وقافيةٍ طغت فنهست منها

بفيَّ مكانَ لا يرقَى اللسيعُ

And an ending that triumphed so I sighed from it

In a place the fleet of foot cannot ascend

يسوغ الشهدُ منها في لَهاتي

وفيها الصابُ والسمُّ النقيعُ

The honey legitimizes it in my wraps

While in it the morning draught and the pure poison

إذا ما راضها غيري تلوَّتْ

تلوِّي البَكرِ حارفَه القطيعُ

If others accept it, it coils

Coiling of a maiden her tribe startled

وحاجةِ ماجدِ اليد مستطيلٍ

إلى الغايات يقصرُ أو يبوعُ

And needy Majid's hand outstretched

To ambitions, falls short or languishes

حبيبٌ عنده طولُ الليالي

كأنّ سهادَه فيها هجوعُ

A lover who through the nights

As if his pillow therein are small pebbles

ركبت إلى الخِطارِ بها زَماعي

وناجيةً مسابحُها الهزيعُ

I rode to dangers with it my processions

And a confidante, her pure camels weak

إذا زفرتْ من الظمأ المطايا

فليلةُ عِشرِها أبداً شُروعُ

When the riding-beasts moan from thirst

The night of their departure begins everlasting

خوارق في أديم الأرضِ طوراً

وأحياناً تُخاط بها الرقوعُ

Transcenders in the earth's surface some time

And sometimes stitched to it are the elevated

إذا اختلفت أسامي السير يوماً

فكلّ اسمٍ لمسراها السريعُ

If the paths' names differ someday

Each name's road was easy for it

تُيمِّمُ من بني أسَدٍ بيوتاً

ببابلَ جارُها الجبلُ المنيعُ

They head from Bani Asad to houses

With its neighbor, the solid mountain

وتَنشَقُ من ثرى عَوفٍ تراباً

ينمُّ بطيبه الكرمُ الرديعُ

And it shakes off from Awfs land some soil

The generous palm tree flourishes from its scent

يضعن عليه أعناقاً رِقاقاً

بها من غير ذلّتها خشوعُ

They place on it slender necks

Without humiliation, with consent

إذا قِيدت بجوٍّ مَزيَدِيٍّ

لواها الخِصبُ والوادي المَريعُ

If tied strongly with a Mezaidi

Grassland and valley pull it

طوالبُ ثابتٍ حيث اطمأنّت

من المجد الذوائبُ والفروعُ

Remains of Thabit where it stayed

From glory the scattering and branches departed

إذا غُنِّينَ باسم أبي قوامٍ

ترنّحت القوائمُ والنسوعُ

When sung with my father Qawam's name

Hooves and palms murmur

طربن لضاحك العَرصات تَغنى ال

رياضُ به ويبتهج الربيعُ

They were delighted that the udder milker sang

Gardens for him blossom and spring is joyous

وَرِيُّ الوجهِ يظهرُ ثم يخفَى

وراء لثامه الفجرُ الصديعُ

Face's light appears then hides

Behind his scruffy unkempt morning

إذا اعتقل القناةَ ندىً وبأساً

تلاقى الماءُ فيها والنجيعُ

If the praised seized a version of might and dignity

Water meets therein both soft and fierce

كريم الأريحيّةِ تطّبيه

رياحُ المجد تُكتَمُ أو تَشيعُ

Generous, supported Ar'ari

Winds of glory conceal or spread

يروّعه الغنى لم يبن مجداً

وتُبطِرُه الخصاصة والقنوعُ

Wealth alarms him who didn't build glory

And shortage and contentment clothe him

إذا ابتاع المكارم لم يُسفِّه

من الأعواض ما فيها يبيعُ

If he gained virtues he doesn't devalue

Of compensations what he sells

أناف به على شرف المعالي

سموُّ النفس والحسبُ الرفيعُ

With him the heights of ambitions

Lofty spirit and noble lineage

وبيتٌ بين غاضرةٍ وعوفٍ

تُناصِي عِيصَه الشُّرُفُ الفروعُ

And a house between Ghadira and 'Awf

Adjoining its honor the branches

إذا الأنسابُ أظلمت استتبّتْ

لكوكبه الإضاءةُ والنصوعُ

When lineages are dark his star shines

With illumination and meteors

من النفر الذين هم اتحاداً

كَوُسطى العِقد في مضرٍ وقوعُ

Of the group that is unified

Like the waist beads' center in Mudar

تَحضَّنهم حواضنُ مُكرَماتٌ

ففات الكهلَ طفلُهم الرضيعُ

Cuddling them laps of the generous

So their suckling infant matured

ومدّوا من خُزَيمةَ خير عِرقٍ

إذا لم يكرم الفحل القريعُ

And they extended from Khuzayma the best vein

When the stallion doesn't value the old

إذا جلسوا تجمّعت المعالي

وإن ركبوا تفرّقت الجموعُ

When they sit, glories gather

And if they ride, crowds disperse

لهم حَلَبُ الندى وحَيَا المَقارِي

إذا جفَّت من السنة الضروعُ

For them the udder's dripping and meadow's liveliness

When the year is dry of rainfall

إذا خمد الوَقودُ ذكت وجوهٌ

تضيء لهم وأعراضٌ تضوعُ

When the firewood dims, faces shine

Lighting for them and pages turning white

يشُبُّ الحربَ منهم مطفئوها

ويُعطِي الأمنَ فيهم مَن يروعُ

They dye war among them extinguishing it

And give security among them who wails

إذا نَبتِ السيوفُ مضت قلوبٌ

وإن قصُر القنا وصلتْه بوعُ

When swords sprout, hearts march

And if the spear is short, they extend it

ولم يتدرعوا سقفاً ولكن

جسومٌ تستجنُّ بها الدروعُ

They didn't wear armor, but

Bodies that armors seek refuge in

مضَوا سلفاً وجاء أبو قوامٍ

فأقبلَ سرُّ مُعجزِهم يذيعُ

They passed on, and Abu Qawam came

So the secret of their miracle spread

فكان البدرَ تصغُرُ جانبيه ال

كواكبُ وهي ثاقبةٌ طُلوعُ

He was the full moon, its sides humbled

Planets penetrating rising

إذا وُزِنوا به رجَحتْ عليهم

موازينٌ بسودَدِهِ وصوعُ

When weighed with him, the scales tipped

With his darkness and spearheads

هو الأسد الوحيدُ إذا أغاروا

وفي الشُّورى هو الرأي الجميعُ

He is the lone lion when they raid

And in counsel he is the consensus

وقاك حذارَك المالُ الملَقَّى

وبلَّغك المنى السيفُ القَطوعُ

Caution protected you from discarded money

And the sword's edge delivered your purpose

وكانت نفسُك المدفوع عنها

بصبرك كلّما جزِع الجزوعُ

Your soul was the thrust, defended

With your patience whenever the terrified shook

وساق لها الغريبَ من المعالي

غريبٌ من خلائقها بديعُ

And the stranger marched to it from glories

A stranger to its nature, unique

كما وُقِّيتَ أمسِ وقد تقصَّى

علاقةَ جسمك الداءُ الوجيعُ

As you were protected yesterday, and the disease parted

The connection of your body, painful

محى تلك الكُلومَ العُورَ ماحٍ

وعفَّى ذلك الوسمَ القطيعُ

It erased those wounds not healing

And cleansed that blemish, filthy

وكنت السيفَ جوذبَ من صداه

بصقلٍ وهو مخبورٌ صنيعُ

You were the sword, its echo refined

With sharpening while heated, crafted

وكان معطَّلاً فغدت عليه

حُليٌّ ما تَثَلَّمُ أو رُصوعُ

It was impaired so you became

Jewelry no blemishes or studs tarnish

وظنَّ بك العدا أن يبلغوها

منىً وأبيك فاركةٌ شَموعُ

The enemy thought to attain their ends from you

While your father's sky lanterns blaze

فرِدْ حوضَ البقاءِ وهم عطاشٌ

وطِرْ بالمكرُماتِ وهم وُقوعُ

Repel the pool of immortality while they thirst

And excel with favors while they fall

وعِشْ تبلغْك مني شارداتٌ

زوائرُ كلّما هجر القَطوعُ

And live, deserted things reach you from me

Visitors whenever the cut off departed

لها في الحسن ينبوعٌ مديدٌ

وفي الإعجاز جِنِّيٌّ مُطيعُ

In beauty for it an eternal spring

And in eloquence, a submitted Jinn

تقود إليك أبكارَ المعاني

وفي الشعر المكرَّرُ والرجيعُ

It leads to you the most virgin meanings

While in poetry the repeated and prose

تخازرك العدا حَسَداً عليها

إذا غنَّى بها اللسِنُ الدليعُ

They envy you it when tongues sing it

To you excess and exaggeration

لك الإفراط منها والتغالي

ومنك لها التطوُّلُ والصنيعُ

And from you its lengthening and crafting

So do not cut off a method, for you are not

فلا تقطع لها رَسْماً فأنت ال

ربيعُ ووقتُ نائلكِ الربيعُ
