1. نوازعُ الشوق والغليلِ

    عليَّ أحنى من العذولِ

    The pangs of yearning and anguish

    Have bent me lower than the bending twig

  2. لام على بابلٍ سهادي

    ونام عن ليلي الطويلِ

    Alas for the sleeplessness of long nights

    While my Laila slumbers long

  3. فمرَّ لا راحماً ضلالي

    فيها ولا سالكاً سبيلي

    The night passed unpitying my wanderings

    Neither following my path nor guiding my steps

  4. ينفض طُرقَ الكرى بصيراً

    بها وطُرْقي بلا دليلِ

    It brushed aside the ways of others, seeing

    While my own way was without guide

  5. تخلَّ لا سرَّك التخلِّي

    وذمّك الودُّ من خليل

    It turned away uncaring though you spurned me

    And your love blamed my estrangement

  6. يا راكبَ الليل مستطيلاً

    يُرجِلُكَ الصبحُ عن قليلِ

    O rider through the long night

    Dawn will soon unhorse you

  7. أمامَك الظُّعْنُ رائحات

    فكيف ترتاح للنزولِ

    The mirages are before you

    How can you rest to alight?

  8. اُنظر فإن الدموع حالت

    جفنِيَ عن ناظرٍ كليلِ

    See, tears have blinded

    My eyes from beholding like the nightblind

  9. أبارقٌ ما تَشيمُ عيني

    أم المصابيحُ في الحُمولِ

    Lightnings - can you discern?

    Or lamps in the darkness?

  10. تسابق الشمسَ جنبَ سلع

    حتى سبقن الدجى بميلِ

    They race the sun alongside flocks

    Till shadows outstripped them a little

  11. ينقُلنَ وخداً بيضاءِ كنٍّ

    نُحضنَ بالشدِّ والذميلِ

    Bearing a cheek white as a silver cup

    Clasped close in their urgency

  12. أهدَى استتارُ الشموسِ فيها

    لغُبْطِها صبغةَ الأصيلِ

    The setting sun's retreat adorned it

    With a flush like the glow of the noble

  13. يا صاحبي والردَى منيخٌ

    يُنظِرني ساعةَ الرحيلِ

    My friend, and fate is against me

    Granting me but an hour to depart

  14. خذ بدمي طرفَ أمّ عمرو

    إن أخِذ السيفُ بالقتيلِ

    Take by my blood the earth of Umm 'Amr

    When the sword takes the slain as booty

  15. واستروح الريحَ من سُلَيمى

    مرّاً على ربعها المُحيلِ

    And breathe the air of Sulayma's land

    Passing by her abandoned encampment

  16. ولم أخلْ قبلَها شفائي

    عند نسيم الصَّبا العليلِ

    Before her I found no healing

    In the breeze of the gentle east wind

  17. وأقتضي أذرعَ المطايا

    ما استصحبتْ من ثرى الطلولِ

    I urge on the camels' legs

    What they swept of the soil of departing

  18. دارُك والركبُ مستقيمٌ

    تعلمُ يا سَلم ما عُدولي

    Your abode, though the party travels straight

    You know, O Salm, I do not swerve

  19. وكيف ظِلُّ الرداءِ فيها

    إذا هُمُ هَجَّروا مَقيلي

    And how the cloak's shadow clung there

    When they, departing, folded my tent

  20. أنصلَ كرُّ السّقامِ شِلواً

    منّي ومنها كَزَّ السيولِ

    The sickness of sadness went halting from me

    And her - the torrents wash away

  21. تَعلّم الوبلُ من دموعي

    فغادر الربعَ في مُحولِ

    The rain learned from my tears

    And left the land for a different course

  22. ما منجزاتُ الوعودِ عندي

    أكرمُ من وعدكِ المَطُولِ

    Not my gifts of promises to fulfill

    Better than your long promise

  23. ولا الحبيبُ الوصولُ أحظى

    لديَّ من طيفِك البخيلِ

    Nor the beloved's attainment more prized

    Than your glancing image's avarice

  24. ربّ سميرٍ سقاطُ فيه

    للهمِّ أنفَى من الشَّمولِ

    How often the night of communion is

    Darker for me than all-encompassing gloom

  25. أهوَى له أن يطولَ ليلي

    ولو على سُقميَ الدخيلِ

    I wish it to lengthen my night

    Even if it worsens my chronic sickness

  26. قد أخذَ الحزمُ بي وأعطى

    وشفَّ عن ماطري مخيلي

    Prudence has restrained me and granted me success

    And inspired my imagination

  27. وجرّب الدهر كيف يمضي

    غربيَ فيه على فلولِ

    And time has proven how it passes

    My westering in it into extinction

  28. إن سفَّهَ الجدبُ رأيَ قومٍ

    عاد حليمي على جهولي

    If dry years misled a people

    My forbearance returned to my ignorance

  29. أو أغنت السنُّ عن رجالٍ

    أربتْ فِصالي على الفحولِ

    Or if old age enriched men

    My chivalry increased over the vigorous

  30. ما خضعتْ للخُمول نفسي

    وصونُ عِرضي مع الخُمولِ

    My soul never surrendered to lethargy

    And my honor is protected despite resignation

  31. ولا استكانت يدي لفقرٍ

    والمالُ في جانبٍ ذليلِ

    Nor has my hand submitted to poverty

    While wealth is humbled to one side

  32. في بُلَغ العيش لي كَفافٌ

    فما التفاتي إلى الفضولِ

    In the comfort of life I have moderation

    So I care nothing for excess

  33. ما أنصف الرزقَ لو أدرّت

    مزنتُه بُرقَةَ العقولِ

    Fortune was not just in apportioning

    Had I complained of its subtlety

  34. وكم فتىً شاكلتْ علاه

    خُلْقي على قلّة الشُّكولِ

    How virtue modeled many a youth

    After me despite my lack of means

  35. منازلٌ كالهلال تُذكِى

    قَدْحتُه في الدجى سبيلي

    Abodes like the crescent moon revive

    My kindling in the darkness my path

  36. يطير بي رائشاً جناحي

    والدهرُ يقتصُّ من نسيلي

    My wings will carry me speeding

    While fate takes away my flowing water

  37. من آل عبد الرحيم وافٍ

    كأنه بالمنى كفيلي

    The family of Abdelraheem, faithful indeed

    As if charged with fulfilling my wishes

  38. من الميامين لم تُخذِّلْ

    فروعُهم عزّةَ الأصولِ

    The branches of their tribe did not

    Disappoint the glory of their roots

  39. ولا استماحوا العُموم فخراً

    سدّوا به ثُلمة الخُؤولِ

    Nor in their magnanimity have they sought

    Pride, thereby plugging the gap of fraud

  40. الغررُ الواضحاتُ فيهم

    مجتمعاتٌ إلى الحجولِ

    The clear jewels within them

    Are societies bound for great deeds

  41. ترطبُ أيديهمُ سِماناً

    في لَهواتِ العام الهزيلِ

    Their hands moist with belting on the sword

    In the pleasures of the faded year

  42. إذا الحيا أخلف استغاثت

    أيمانَهم ألسنُ المُحولِ

    If the living call for help

    Their oaths are renewed by the tongues of swords

  43. همْ قشروا العار عن عصاهم

    بكلِّ عاري الظُّبا صقيلِ

    They stripped bare the disgrace from their rods

    With every stripping that bares the sharp sword

  44. واستيقظوا للتِّراتِ لمّا

    نامت عيونٌ على الذُّحولِ

    And rose alert when nations slept

    Eyes closed in slumber

  45. كلّ غلامٍ يَسُدُّ مجداً

    بنفسه ثُغرةَ القبيلِ

    Every brave youth there stops up

    A breach in the tribe with his soul

  46. يحتشم البحرُ من يديه

    والبدرُ من وجهه الجميلِ

    The sea is abashed before his hand

    The moon before his beautiful face

  47. تَقلِص عن ساقه قِصاراً

    ذيولُ سرباله الطويلِ

    Beneath his leg the robes' trains recoil

    Though long, now shortened

  48. يذرع طولَ القناة قدّاً

    وهي تنافيه في الذُّبولِ

    He spans the canal's length in strides

    While it shrinks from him in decay

  49. تُنمَى العلا من أبي المعالي

    إلى عريق الثرى أصيلِ

    Glory grows from Abul Maali

    To lofty ground, noble and sublime

  50. ويحمل الخطبَ يومَ يعرو

    منه على كاهلٍ حَمولِ

    On the day glory is unveiled from him

    He bears the burden on shoulders strong

  51. أبلج يجري الجمال منه

    في سنّتي واضح أسيلِ

    Dazzling white he flows on the beautiful camels

    In my path, clearly smooth

  52. يردُّ خُزْرَ العيون قُبْلاً

    إليه من شدّة القبولِ

    The eyes rain down tears before him

    From the severity of passion

  53. لا فترةُ العاجز المروِّي

    فيه ولا طيشةُ العَجولِ

    No weakness in the helpless weakling

    Nor recklessness in the hasty youth

  54. يستند الوعدُ والعطايا

    منه إلى قائلٍ فَعولِ

    Promise and gift rely on him

    As speaker of great deeds

  55. معتدل الشيمتين حلو ال

    طعمين في الصعبِ والذَلولِ

    Balanced in nature, sweet in taste

    Both difficult and gentle

  56. يزيده النَّيلُ لينَ مسٍّ

    إن لعب العُجبُ بالمنيلِ

    The Nile adds to its softness

    If conceit plays with the waterwheel

  57. للفِقَر المشكلاتِ منه

    عارضةُ البارقِ الهطولِ

    To the knotty problems of poverty

    He is a pouring cloud

  58. إذا لهاة البليغ جفَّتْ

    أرسلها من فمٍ بَليلِ

    If the mouths of the glib go dry

    He sends it from a mouth eloquent

  59. يفديك مسروقةٌ علاه

    راضٍ من المجدِ بالغُلولِ

    Some ransomed slave of his would give his glory

    Content with praise as recompense

  60. مؤتنِفٌ غير مستزيدٍ

    وعاثرٌ غير مستقيلِ

    Complaisant without greed

    And stumbling without resignation

  61. أمواله ضَرَّة العطايا

    وزادُهُ غُصَّةُ الأكيلِ

    His wealth is liberal with gifts

    And his provisions abundance to enjoy

  62. يا موردي والفراتُ مِلحٌ

    نميرَ ودٍّ أرضى غليلي

    My solace as the Euphrates is salty

    The cooling of affection fulfilled my anguish

  63. أسرْتني بالوفاء لمّا

    رأيتَه وهو من كبولي

    You captivated me with loyalty when

    You saw it, though I had little

  64. وقمتَ لمّا ولِيتَ نصري

    والناسُ من قاعدٍ خَذولِ

    You supported me when you inclined to my aid

    While people sat back, indifferent

  65. أمرٌ وإن خفَّ كان عندي

    في زِنةِ المُهبِط الثقيلِ

    A matter, though slight, is weighty to me

    In the balance of the steep ascent

  66. إذا حملتَ الدقيقَ عنّي

    ولست تعيا عن الجليلِ

    When you carry the flour for me

    You feel no disdain for the exalted

  67. لم يرتجعك الجفاءُ منّي

    عن كرم العاطفِ الوَصولِ

    Estrangement does not turn you from me

    From the kindness of fulfilled attachment

  68. ولم تؤاخذْ قديمَ عجزي

    عنك ولم تعتقب نكُولي

    You do not reproach my lifelong inadequacy

    Nor upbraid my failure

  69. فلتوفيَنْك الجزاءَ عنّي

    قاسطةُ الوزن والكيولِ

    So the reward from me is incumbent on you

    The weighing of deeds and recompense

  70. إن أُتِيَ الشعرُ من قُصورٍ

    صدرن من معرضِ مطيلِ

    If poetry comes from palaces

    Their breasts have not known chastity

  71. أوانسٌ ما عرفن صوناً

    قبلَك ما لمسةُ البُعولِ

    Intimacies they knew no modesty before you

    Never touched by separation

  72. تغشاك حتّى أخشى عليها

    حاشاك من فَترة المَلولِ

    They envelop you until I fear for them

    God forbid the boredom of jadedness

  73. إذا خلوتم بها أقامت

    لكم على مَخْبَري دليلي

    If alone with them they stand openly

    As guides of my traced footsteps

  74. من عربيّ الطباع فيها

    تخطِر مجرورةَ الذيولِ

    Of Arab nature yet Persian behavior

    The ends of their robes trailing

  75. قد كنتُ أعددتُها ليومٍ

    يُبلغني المجدُ فيه سُولي

    I had prepared them for a day

    When glory would reach my aspirations

  76. أزفُّها فيه تحت ظلٍّ

    من سُحْبِ نَعمائكم ظليلِ

    I hoped to wed them beneath the shade

    Of your rain of blessings, abundant

  77. مصطفياً مَهرَها بحكمي

    من فيضِ أيديكم الجزيلِ

    Endowed with your judgment, Mahra for dowry

    From the outpouring of your generous hands

  78. فعدلَتْ بي الأيّام عنه

    لا عَرفَتْ حَيرةَ العُدولِ

    But time has turned me from it

    Knowing the confusion of change

  79. إن ينبُ دهرٌ بكم فِقدْماً

    لم يخلُ من غدرةٍ وغُولِ

    If an era breeds loss through you

    It will not be without deceit and injustice

  80. وكم أدبَّ الصدا فساداً

    إلى ظُبا الصارمِ الصقيلِ

    And how much wisdom corrupts into ruin

    Like the striking sparks from Indian steel

  81. وأرسلت أنملٌ لواها ال

    ظنُّ على عهده المُحيلِ

    And fingers are outstretched, forgetting

    Oaths and covenants now void

  82. ما خلَصَ الرأيُ من فسادٍ

    يَقدحُ والعرضُ من خُمولِ

    Wisdom is not safe from corruption

    That kindles while honor slumbers

  83. فالمالُ إن أمحلت رباه

    خضَّرها الغيثُ عن قليلِ

    So if I bear money's disgrace

    The rain will revive it after a little

  84. لا بد للشمس من كسوفٍ

    والعمُرِ التِّمِّ من أفولِ

    The sun must suffer an eclipse

    And life, loss at its perfection

  85. ثم يعودان لم يُزالا

    بنقصِ نورٍ ولا نُقولِ

    Then both return, unchanged

    With no less light or blemish

  86. وكالة الله فيكُمُ لي

    حسبي رعتكم عينُ الوكيلِ

    God's blessing on you is enough for me

    I am content with your care, kind guardian

  87. بكم أطال الزمانُ دِرعي

    وأبرم الحظ من سَحيلي

    Through you my time is prolonged

    And fate is gentle to me

  88. كما حاسدٍ عندكم مكاني

    يدعو سهيلاً إلى النزولِ

    While an envier among you desires my place

    Calling Suhayl to descend

  89. وغائبٍ ذنبكم إليه

    أنّكُمُ قد فطنتُمُ لي

    And one absent, whose crime is

    That you have become aware of me
