أيقظَني للبرقِ وهو نائمُ

جهالةً والعربيُّ حازمُ

He woke me to lightning while he slept

Ignorantly, while the Arab is resolute

لو هاج من دائك ما هيَّج لي

علمتَ أني للبروق شائمُ

If he was angry with my sickness, it would not stir me

You knew I was a reviler of lightning

حدَّثني عن الغضا وأهلِهِ

فانكشفَ السِّترُ ونمَّ الكاتمُ

He told me of youth and its people

So the veil was lifted and the concealer slept

للبارقاتِ مطَرٌ وهذه

مُزنتُها دموعِيَ السواجمُ

Lightning brings rain, and this

Is its provision - my pouring tears

في كلِّ ذات صبوةٍ من عَبْرتي

ما يشكُرُ الراعي ويَرضَى السائمُ

In every essence of my crying

What pleases the shepherd and satisfies the blamer

رعايةً وإنه من شيمتي

عهدٌ حصينٌ وحِفاظٌ دائمُ

As care and yet it is my trait

A strong covenant and lasting pledge

سلا المحبّون وعندي زفرةٌ

عسراءُ لا تنقضها العزائمُ

The lovers asked, and I have a difficult sigh

That unyielding determination cannot break

كم خطَرٍ دونَكِ يا ذات اللَّمي

خِيضْت له الفِجاجُ والمخارِمُ

How many dangers below you, O essence of beauty

The valleys and ruins humbled before

ووقفةٍ ترمُقُني مرتابةً

فيها ظُبا قومِكِ واللهاذمُ

And a stand that looks upon me doubtfully

In which appear your tribe’s gazelles and fawns

أساند الدوحَ فتمتارُ الجوَى

من نزَواتِ صدرِيَ الحمائمُ

I lean on the sand dune as the thirsty camels writhe

From the whims of my heart’s doves

وباللوى من نظرةٍ ضائعةٍ

لم تغرَميها والزعيمُ غارمُ

And I am bent by a wandering gaze

That did not make me a debtor, though the chief is infatuated

إنّ الظباءَ بالغضا ضياغمٌ

والأَجَمُ الكِناسُ والصرائمُ

The gazelles are hunters in the meadows

While the camel stallions are the fabricators and slanderers

أَصُدّ عن سَلْع بقلبٍ كلّما

أُطيرَ خوفا عاد وهو حائمُ

I block the way to those who offer with a heart that, whenever

It takes fright, returns still seeking

كما يُطيعُ اليأسُ ثم يلتوِي

طماعةً مع الشميم الرائمُ

As desperation obeys, then cunningly turns

Greedy, along with the accusing wind

كم أُنفقُ العمرَ على رعيِ المُنَى

وهي خبيثاتُ الثرى هشائمُ

How I spend my life herding Death,

Which are the vilest of creatures, deceivers

وحاجتي إلى الزمان صاحبٌ

مساعدٌ وقدَرٌ مسالمُ

And I need time as a companion

Helper and peaceful fate

أكلُّ من كاشَرني بوجههِ

بِشْراً فوجهُ قلبِهِ مُجاهِمُ

I eat anyone who grinned at me with his face

Though the face of his heart is hostile

ما أغضبَ الناسَ عليّ هل سوى

أني بدنياهم خبير عالمُ

Nothing angered people against me but

That I am an expert and knowledgeable of their world

عندي الغنَى عنها على خَصاصةٍ

وعندَهم حظوظُها الجسائمُ

I can do without it frugally

While they have its greedy fortunes

والفضلُ والعفَّةُ عنهم قسمةٌ

أُعطيتُها كما أراد القاسمُ

Virtue and chastity were allotted to me

As the Apportioner willed, not as they desired

وليسَ كلُّ شفَةٍ مبلولةً

وإن سخَتْ بمائها الغمائمُ

Not every juicy lip,

Though overflowing with its clouds, is untainted

لله في طُرْقِ المعالي فِتيةٌ

رفيقُهم على الزمان حاكمُ

God has among the paths of glory some youths

Whose companion against time is triumphant

تعرَّفوا ريحَ الهجيرِ فغدَتْ

نسيمَ أنفاسِهِمُ السمائمُ

They recognized the scent of departure, so it became

The breeze of their gentle breaths

يضيقُ رحبُ الأرضِ في أزحامهم

فأرضُهم تحت السُّرَى العزائمُ

The vastness of the land is too narrow in their crowds

So their land is under the mantle of resolves

صوَّحَ كلُّ نابتٍ في عامهم

حتى الجِمَامُ السودُ واللهازمُ

Like arrows above them are discerning sights

And faces like unsheathed swords

تحمِلُهم منتقَياتٌ سُوقُها

تَحِلُّ منها للرُّبى المحارمُ

If a fawn calls under them for help

Its long nights are cut short

تزقو بأصواتِ الحصا أخفافُها

كل تحُصّ الوَبرَ الجوالمُ

As if the night is the darkness of a people

Raided at dawn by the assailant

كأنما الأرضُ لها مَهارِقٌ

يُملي السّرى وتكتبُ المناسمُ

Say to him who doubts my back warily,

“Increase your foolishness, I am a peaceable man”

مثل السهام فوقها بصائرٌ

مُبيضَّةٌ وأوجُهٌ سواهمُ

No hand outstretched dims the sun, nor

Does a foreign fang bite in sudden assault

إذا استغاثت تحتها تعريسة

تقاصرت ليلاتُها التمائمُ

My time has already revealed my pages to you

And my attributes became visible

كأنما الليلُ سوادُ لِمَّةٍ

سُلَّ من الصبحِ عليه صارمُ

So who are you today while my victory is present

And my absent fortune is coming to me

قل للذي يحصِب ظهرِي ريبةً

زِدْ سَفَها إني امرؤ محالمُ

The waning moon has been restored to me

As a full moon, and the nose of darkness is bent

لا تطمِس الشمسَ يدٌ مُدَّتْ ولا

يغمِزُ في الصَّعدةِ نابٌ عاجمُ

The dew has been returned to the earth, and

The cutting swords have filled its sheaths

قد كان أبدَى لك دهري صفحتي

شيئا وبانت منّيَ المراجمُ

For everyone who doubts fate bitterly

Among the clan of Abdel Rahim, there is a merciful

فمن لك اليومَ ونصري حاضرٌ

وحظِّيَ الغائبُ عني قادمُ

The blossoms are stars, among which some

Borrow light, and others are veiled

والقمرُ الآفلُ قدْ أعيدَ لي

بدرا وأنفُ الظلُمات راغمُ

And the pure lineage which no stain of pollution

From a foreigner has touched with tenacity

رُدَّ الندى إلى الثرى ورجَعتْ

فملأتَ غمودَها الصوارمُ

They excelled in generosity, so each protector

Of his guest is his brother or contestant

لكلِّ شاكٍ غَدرةً من دهره

عندَ بني عبدِ الرحيم راحمُ

And favor was distributed justly through them when

Injustices were referred to their judgment

الأنجُمُ الزُّهرُ فمنها ثاقبٌ

مستسلَفُ النورِ ومنها ناجمُ

Say to Abi Saad of what prolonged separation

And cruel parting have dragged me

والعِترة البيضاءُ لم يعلَقْ بها

من دنَس الُهجنة عِرقٌ واصمُ

Yesterday, I would have been content with my desire

That it be said, “He has returned safely”

اِستَبقوا الجودَ فكلُّ دافعٌ

عن ضيفِهِ أخاهُ أو مُزاحمُ

But today, O flutter of my heart with joy,

Let it be said, “Safe and victorious!”

وانتصفَ الفضلُ بهم مذ جُعلت

منه إلى حُكمهم المظالمُ

They have appointed the reins of authority to the most

Powerful, whom even the greatest cannot subdue

قل لأبي سعدٍ على ما جرَّهُ ال

شوقُ عليّ والفراقُ الغاشمُ

The healers alone were not their chieftain

In their sickness, but the final arbiter

قد كنتُ أرضَى أمسِ من أمنيّتي

بأن يقال عادَ وهو سالمُ

The epithets of a people are divisive idols

While your epithets are reconciliations

فاليومَ يا طيرةَ قلبي فرَحاً

بأن يقالَ سالمٌ وغانمُ

The eye of exaltation has not seen for itself

In what glory bestows or contests

قد قلَّدوا منه زمامَ أمرهم

أغلبَ لا تُخضِعه العظائمُ

Like a cloak I departed wearing

Glory, while rough wool is worn by the lowly

إن الكُفَاة لم يكن عميدَهم

في دائهم إلا الطبيبُ الحاسمُ

They tailored the clouds as a garment, so

Your body was clothed - boast of whom you resemble!

ألقابُ قوم نافراتٌ شُمُسٌ

تنبو وألقابُكُمُ ميَاسمُ

White or dyed - the stars' blossoms were brought to it,

Arranged and sewn

وما رأتْ عينُ العلا لنفسها

فيما يسدّي المجدُ أو يلاحمُ

Apparent pride, and within it

Another, and twin gifts are best

كخلعٍ رحتَ بها مكتسياً

عزّاً وتُكسَى اللِّبَدَ الضراغمُ

They crowned you as a pillar, yet

Crowns are the turbans of the likes of you

خاطوا السحابَ حُلَّةً فضُمِّنَتْ

جسمَك فلتفخرْ بمن تجاسمُ

And they sealed with softness that no

Tooth criticized, seeking payment, regretting

بيضاء أو صبيغة وَشَّى لها

زُهرَ النجومِ راقشٌ وراقمُ

The means of eminence supplemented it, taught

To beware lest even the resolute covet

ظاهرة الفخرِ ومن باطنِها

أخرى وخير المِنَحِ التوائمُ

If he who flatters stands, he stands

To the face of the dignitary, not to the shameless

وتوَّجوك عِمَّةً وإنما

تيجانُ أمثالكم العمائمُ

An intention whose qualities on the day

Of the wager he does not know, the destructive gambler

وختَّموا ملساء لم يخدِشْ بها

سنٌّ على إثر العطايا نادمُ

Setting forth on four legs

As if they are, in their nimbleness, runners

وسائل الغُرّةِ وافٍ ردفُهُ

أُدِّبَ أن يُشفِقَ منه الحازمُ

Before it, the winds did not make light

Of wings as burdens

أحوَى إذا قام إليه ماسحٌ

قام إلى وجه الوجيه لاطمُ

In its lead runs the wolf of the valley

And predators threaten the game with it

بَنيَّة لا يدَّرِي صَفاتَها

يومَ الرِّهان من لُغوبٍ هادمُ

It avoids what its foreleg avoids

As they lie on their flanks

مُنطلِقٌ بأربع قوائمٍ

كأنهنّ خفةً قوادمُ

You mounted it as the full moon, and Canopus

Was unharnessed for you - it is the excuse if blamed

مع الرياح لم يكن من قبلها

تهزأ بالأجنحة القوائمُ

Tresses of brightness whose knots

Were weighed down by their braider

يمرح في مِقوده ذئبُ الغضا

وتوعِد الوحشَ به القشاعمُ

And amplitude of chest despite the narrowness in it -

Articulate, while its people are mute

ويتَّقي ما تتَّقي برُسغِهِ

وهي على بطونها الأراقمُ

Water that gives you an eloquent mouth that

Time does not obscure, untainted tongue

أُركِبْتَه بدراً وقد حُطَّت لك ال

جوزاءُ فهي العُذْر والشكائمُ

What is praised in it would forever be condemned

In the like of lips and smiles

نظائمٌ من النّضار عُقْنَهُ

بَهْرا بما أثقلَهنّ الناظمُ

Adorned with yellow, born of Rum's breed, their

Fathers the Abyssinian forefathers

ورحبة الصدر على ضيقٍ به

مفصِحة وقومُها أعاجمُ

The sun's cloak is beneath it

While beneath are a plump cheek and a dazzling forehead

لمياء تعطيك فماً أشدقَ لا

يغبُّه الدهرَ لسانٌ لاثمُ

Jewelry has ripped it open, so within it

Are unborn ones whom no misfortunes have befallen

يُحْمَدُ منه ما تُذَمُّ أبدا

بمثله الشِّفاهُ والمباسمُ

They have not what remains while you remain

Of what their suckling mothers weaned

تُزهَى بصُفرٍ من بني الروم لها

آباؤها الأحابشُ الأداهمُ

A hand passes the limits of killing and mutilation among them

Yet they have no crimes

لها من الشمس وشاحٌ تحته

جيدٌ أغمُّ والبنانُ فاحمُ

They speak no language, all of them

Among the people are interpreters

افتضَّها الحَلْيُ ففي أحشائها

أجنَّةٌ لم تحوِهم مشائمُ

Her command is your sword which she employs

A hand whose changing of time is subservient

ليس لهم ما بقِيتْ وما بقُوا

عما أدرَّت من رَضاعٍ فاطمُ

Your fame is the eyelids of your swords

And your scripts are columns supporting your kingdom

تمضِي حدودَ القتلِ والقطعِ يدٌ

فيهم وليست لهمُ جرائمُ

Whenever a tribe disobeys

And takes to rancor and disputes

لا ينطِقون لغةً وكلُّهم

بين الأنام رُسُلٌ تَراجمُ

You summon it to your enemies

As booty - its skulls and remains

إمرَتُها دَسْتُك تستخدمها

يدٌ لها صَرفُ الزمان خادمُ

Exert yourself, so you may attain the likes of it

For exertion is the ladder to exaltation

دُوِيُّكم جفونُ أسيافكُمُ

وكُتبكم لملككم دعائمُ

One who enjoys another's shade will ransom you,

Seeking his own affair while he is sated

وكنتمُ متى عَصَت قبيلةٌ

وأخذتْ بالكَظَم الخصائمُ

He fell asleep on this civility ignorantly

While you stand rejecting the flecked pebbles

أطرتمُ منها إلى أعدائكم

أجادلا أوكارُها الجماجمُ

Binding his inability out of love for us,

Caring not what the critic says

قم بمساعيك فنل أمثالَها

إن المساعي للعلا سلالمُ

When his cloak falls short, the envious chides him

In every member with speech

يَفديك مشمولٌ بظلِّ غيره

يسعَى سواه وهو كاسٍ طاعمُ

By you, O people of Abdel Rahim, are those whose

Destiny's birds are ominous

نامَ على هذي الصفاةِ غفلةً

وأنت من نبذ الحصاةِ قائمُ

I married my hopes to your oaths

So their wombs bore strong bonds

عاقدَ في حبّ الهوينا عجزَه

أن لا يبالي ما يقول اللائمُ

I sold my hopes, feeling secure,

And the branch of my livelihood thrives tenderly among you

إذا نضا سِربالَه كلَّمَهُ

من حسدٍ في كلِّ عضوٍ كالمُ

A folk whom the camels that hasten

To water have filled their lair

بكم بني عبد الرحيم يامنت

إلى المنى وطيرها أشائمُ

With you is a perpetual abundance of wealth

That rights and legal dues recognize

زوّجتُ آماليَ من أيْمانكم

فولدَتْ بطونُها العقائمُ

You fulfill bounty whose like

Enemies allege and the unjust permit themselves

باعُ رجائي بكُمُ موسَّعٌ

وغصنُ عيشى في ذَراكم ناعمُ

You are of a people who share with their Lord

What they have gained

أسمنَ قومٌ ملأتْ عرينَهم

مثلَ الحصون الإبلُ السوائمُ

And you have worn it, so take it off, for the dew's

Equity is not to divide the spoils

وعندكم جَذيمُ مالٍ أبدا

تعرِفهُ الحقوقُ والمغارمُ

You built it, so clarify, and describe it

With its like - thus are noble deeds

تلتزمون كَرَما ما تدّعِي

فيه العدا ويستحلُّ الظالمُ

Grant it uniquely as a gesture of honor to one whose

Daughters of nobility have always been gifted to you

إنكُمُ من معشرٍ عندهُمُ

فيما استفادَ ربُّهم مساهمُ

Arabized with your praise - in it is the pleasure

Of some people, and in some people, its critics

وقد لبستم فاخلعوا إن الندى ال

عادلَ أن تُقَسَّمَ المغانمُ

When it is flawed or confused, its father is Dari

Poetry, and the stars roam with it

بنتم بها فبيِّنوا واصفَها

بمثلها فهكذا المكارِمُ

The souls and spirits fall in love with it

As a bracelet - if only they were steadfast!

خُصُّوا بها تكرِمةً مَن لم يزل

تُهدَى لكم بناتُه الكرائمُ

They grieve them bitterly, and heal them by what

It articulates - it is the touch and the piercings

معرِبةً بمدحكم فيها رِضَى

قومٍ وفي قومٍ لها سخائمُ

By it, your slumbering and distant ones love -

Present and dreaming of the lands

متَى تكن سَلُولُ أو باهلة

آباءَ شعرٍ فأبوها دارمُ

My specter recited it to you in sleep, so it was interpreted

Truthfully, though the sleeping may be deluded

سوائرٌ مع النجوم ترتمي

بها نجودُ الأرض والتهائمُ

Its key and seal testify for me

That I am the seal of poets

تودّ أكبادُ العدا إن صغتُها

أسورةً لو أنّها مَعاصمُ

تُدويهمُ غيظا وتشفيهم بما

تُفصح فهي المسُّ والتمائمُ

يُحبَى بها يقظانُ منكم حاضرٌ

وغائبٌ عن البلاد حالمُ

ضاجعَكم طيفي بها فأُوِّلَتْ

صادقةً وقد يُغَرّ النائمُ

يَشهدُ لي مِفتاحها وخَتمها

بأنني للشعراءِ خاتمُ
