جَمَّ لها الوادي وعزَّ الذائدُ

وطاب ما حدَّثَ عنها الرائدُ

The valley was beautified for her, and the pursuer grew mighty

And the scout's report of her was pleasant

فخلِّها راتعةً مجرورةً

وراءها الأرسانُ والمَقاودُ

So leave her pacing slowly with her camel train

Behind her are the steeds and mounted warriors

يُخلِفُ ما استُسلفَ من جِرَّاتها

كهلٌ أثيثٌ ومَعينٌ باردُ

An aged, wise man fulfilling what he borrowed of her determination

While the aggressor cannot get his chance

حيثُ المغيرُ لا ينالُ فرصةً

منها ولا يطمعُ فيها الطاردُ

Nor the repeller hopes to gain from her

The swords sheathe her distinguishing signs from her Lord

تذبُّ عنها من سِماتِ ربّها

صوارمٌ ليس لها مَغامدُ

When they appear on a neck or thigh

They are eyes keeping guard over her

إذا بدت في عُنُقٍ أو حارِكٍ

فهي عليها أعينٌ رواصدُ

Sleep! For this sanctuary has made her sacred

And gathered her while she wandered untamed

ونَمْ فقد حرَّمَها هذا الحمى

وضمَّها وهي دُخَان شاردُ

And made all people together incapable of herding her

So today one herds her, and all submit

وأعجزَ الناسَ جميعاَ رَعْيُها

فاليومَ يرعاها جميعاً واحدُ

Most awe-inspiring, undefeated by deception

Nor do schemes creep into her sanctuary

أَرْوَعُ لا يغلِبُه المكرُ ولا

تدِبُّ في حريمه المَكايدُ

He lent her an eye, so she became a charm

While the devil of the age is subdued

أعارها عيناً فكانت عُوذَةً

لها وشيطانُ الزمان ماردُ

Her tent was carpeted by the All-Sufficient

So shade pours and the breeze blows cool

أفرشَها كافي الكفاةِ أمنَهُ

فالظلُّ سَكْبٌ والنسيمُ باردُ

Time bowed to her with its crown

And the binder released the rope of humiliation from her

دانَ بتاجِ الحضرةِ الدهرُ لها

وحلَّ حبلَ الذلِّ عنها العاقدُ

She embodied that after her the spring

Was sheets of rain from His hands pouring down

وصدَّقَتْ أَن الربيعَ بعدَها

بوارقٌ من يده رواعدُ

The branches of glory dived beneath her water

So the withered bloomed and food was set

غاصتْ غصونُ المجد تحتَ مائها

فأورقَ الذاوِي وقام المائدُ

The barren earth laughed from the face of fertile land

And the frozen valley of honors flowed forth

وضَحِكَ القاطبُ من وجه الثرى

وسالَ وادي المكرُماتِ الجامدُ

Good tidings were heralded to the remnants of its people

"Do not despair among the people, for one who brings glory remains"

وبشَّر الفضلُ بقايا أهلِهِ

لا تقنطوا في الناسِ بعدُ ماجدُ

He transferred to the children of seekers and purpose

While the pilgrim's roads were too narrow for them

نقل لأبناء الطِّلاب والمنى

والحاجِ ضاقتْ بهم المَقاصدُ

They trade glory, so it decreases in value

In their hands, while covetous merchandise increases

يتاجرون المجدَ فتخيسُ في

أيديهم البضائعُ الكواسدُ

Your affection covers them while they are

Honored in horizons or wanderers in the wild

تضمُّكم حَنوَتُهُ وأنتُمُ

عِزُونَ في الآفاق أو بدائدُ

He took charge of affairs so bent their necks

Yearning for goals while settled

زَمَّ الأمور فلَوَى أعنافَها

ساعٍ إلى الغايات وهو قاعدُ

And managed the world according to its corruptions

So it was set right while time remains decayed

ودبَّر الدنيا على عِلاَّتها

فصَلَحَتْ والدهرُ دهرٌ فاسدُ

Firm in his resolve, piercing the ignorance of the age

A bare sword, its sheath discarded

ماضٍ له من عزمه مجرَّدٌ

يذُبُّ من جهلِ الزمانِ غامدُ

He sees the face of today revealing the chest of tomorrow

Which gives him the downpours from its clouds

يَرَى بوجهِ اليوم صدرَ غدِهِ

تُعطيه ما في المَصدرِ المواردُ

He takes wisdom only from the Most High

While people descend, he ascends

لا يأخذ التدبيرَ إلا مِن عَلٍ

فالناسُ ينحطُّون وهو صاعدُ

He saw the limit of his glory as a beginning

When his palm was aided by his arm

رأى انتهاءَ مجدِهِ مبتدَأً

لَمّا أعانَ الكفَّ منه الساعدُ

The perfection of all kept him awake alone

While in the eyes of people he slept

أسهرَهُ حبُّ العلا منفرِداً

وهو على ظنِّ العيون راقدُ

He brought dignity while time is foolish

And generosity while clouds are frozen

جَدَّ وقاراً والزمانُ هازلٌ

وجادَ عفواً والسحابُ جامدُ

In the kingdom he shone like a shooting star

Whose spark set ablaze a stagnant reign

ولاحَ في المُلك شِهاباً فوَرَى

زنادُهُ والمُلكُ نجمٌ خامدُ

Victorious by himself for himself

Like a lion buying whatever lacks a helper

منتصراً بنفسه لنفسه

كالليث يشرَى ما لَهُ مساعدُ

Restraint cannot control his affair

Nor can calamities fray his patience

لا يَملكُ الحفظُ عليه أمرَهُ

ولا تُفرِّي حِلمَه الشدائدُ

Excellence lifts him from his heavy burdens

With a staff the frozen cannot bear

يُنهضِه الكمالُ من أثقالِهِ

بأوسُقٍ تلفِظها الجلامدُ

He stretched his wing's protection over the state

As no father stretches affection over his sons

مدَّ على الدولةِ من جناحه

ما مدَّ عطْفاً لبنيه الوالدُ

Until it stood straight though straying sightless

A blind leader before it has no guide

حتى استقامتْ وهي بَلهاءُ الخُطَا

عمياءُ ما بين يديها قائدُ

How many steps slipped with it in weakness

And palms did not obey it or arms assist

كم قدَمٍ قبلَك قد زَلَّتْ بها

ضُعفاً وكفٍّ لم يُطِعها الساعدُ

And rulers who were not helped when it transgressed

By experiment or custom were confounded

وضابطٍ لم يُغنِهِ لَمّا طغتْ

أدواؤُها التجريبُ والعوائدُ

He guards it though none of its pillars of support

Wanes as it grows like the celestial horizon

يَحرُسها وليس من حُماتِها

مثلُ الشَّغَا ينقُصُ وهو زائدُ

A miracle appeared from him, a manifest sign

Testimony stood by it though unforeseen

جاءت على الفَتْرةِ منه آيةٌ

معجِزةٌ قامت بها الشواهدُ

An abrupt gift, unanticipated

And no opportunities were appointed for it

مَوهِبةٌ فاجئةٌ لم تُحتَسَبْ

ولم تسوِّفْه بها المَواعدُ

You were hidden, watching the days for

Its time to reveal you, or else observing

كنتَ خبيئاً ترقُبُ الأيامُ في

إِظهارِه المِيقاتَ أو تراصِدُ

Like embers in flint, yesterday a spark

Today ablaze and glowing hot

كالنارِ في الزّند تكون شَرَراً

بالأمس وهو اليومَ جمرٌ واقدُ

So the eyes saw you as a star

Blooming with no customs witnessed before

فأبرزتْك للعيونِ كوكباً

يَزهَرُ لم تَجرِ به العوائدُ

A gift suddenly granted, not calculated

No delays were made in granting it

يَفديك محظوظون وجهُ عجزِهم

بِغَلَطِ النّعمة فيهم شاهدُ

Kingdom volunteered it first

And every waner returns to generosity

قد سَرَق الدهرُ لهم سيادةً

ليس لها من المَساعي عاضدُ

I had harmonized for you the birds with it

While my fortune still bows

تَنافَرُ الأقلامُ عن أَيمانهم

وتَقشعِرُّ منهم الوسائدُ

And its swords flashed for me in desire

Before the sheaths brought them out

لم يَنظِموا المجدَ كما نَظَمتَهُ

ولا حلَتْ عندهم المحَامدُ

Knowing the tools you possess

That these are swords and you the arm

ولا أَعان طارفاً من حظّهم

مجدُ أبٍ مثلِ أبيك تالدُ

So the knight of assumption did not fail me

Nor did delusions witnessed trick me

وخيرُ من شاد الفخارَ رافعٌ

أُسرَتُهُ لِمَا بَنَى قواعِدُ

And still I have hopeful expectation in you

Accounting increases, gazing to the sky

وبعضُ علياءِ الفتى مَكاسبٌ

بنفسه وبعضُها مَوالدُ

Until the age's course is rent asunder

While you remain and elevation eternal

وليهنِكَ الأمرُ الذي ذلَّ به

لك العزيزُ وأقرّ الجاحدُ

Through you glory regained its spilt blood

Poured out while it decayed

ولاَنَ في يديك منهُ مرِسٌ

مُلاوِذٌ مَن رامَهُ مُحايدُ

You supported it while people were ignorant

Of its right or aware but hostile

يَنقُصُ من قدرِك وهو فاضلٌ

على وِسيعات الأماني زائدُ

And you sprinkled wings upon its youth

Whose fainthearted feathers took flight

ومُشرِفاتٌ فُضُلٌ لبِستَها

تَزْلُقُ عنها المُقَلُ الحدائدُ

You give while impoverishing, truly

Only the sea gives while possessing

كلِبدةِ الليثِ وَسَطاً وحسنُها

كالوشي تُكساهُ الدُّمَى الخرائدُ

You planted in me a former grace

While I harvest from it - so for this thanks are yours

لو كانت الأفلاكُ أجساداً لَمَا

كان لها من مثلها مَجاسِدُ

Kindness upon a memory, pride enduring

While time passes away

باطِنة وظاهر جمالُها

فالحسنُ منها غائبٌ وشاهدُ

And consideration - you began me with wisdom

If its wisdom had recurred to me

تَسحَبها في الأرض ولفخْرها

مَعالِقٌ في الجوّ أو مَعاقدُ

But you intended good for me, while between

Were obstacles of my time blocking the way

وكالسماء عِمّةٌ صِبْغَتُها

قد جاءها من الزمان وافدُ

Does my land deserve your clouds raining upon

Its barrenness the pouring rain?

مقدودةٌ منها ومن نجومها

في طَرَفَيْها سائرٌ وراكدُ

I planted in you loyalty and passion

So what harvest is mine, what crops to reap?

إن لم تكن تاجاً فقد أكسبَهَا

نورُك ما لم يُكسَ تاجاً عاقدُ

Look - in darkness you destined

Equity though agreeing to darkness

وضاربٌ إلى الوجيهِ عِرْقُهُ

بأربع تَشقَى بها الأوابدُ

And fulfill glory's debts in it, make wide for me

What bonds of kinship make wide

من اللواتي نَصَرَتْ آباءَها

في السبق أمّهاتُها الردائدُ

Be not - God forbid - of those who accompany

Whose pacts beliefs falsify

وصَبَحَتْها بالصريفِ عُلَباً

قبلَ عِيالِ ربِّها الولائدُ

They were my hand though their winds lacked

My family, while fortune was against them

خاضَ الظلامَ فاهتد بغُرّةٍ

كوكبُها لمقلتيه قائدُ

So when their gales blew furious

The loyal diminished and supporters grew distant

يجاذبُ الريحَ على الأرض ومِن

قلائدِ الأفْقِ له قلائدُ

I disdained to be drunk from their disloyalty

In my disdain still cupbearers for them

حَلْيٌ من التبرِ إذا خَفَّ بها

أُثقِلَ فهو تحتها مُجاهدُ

Stingy, whom no gift honors

While the paths and goals are to it

ينصاعُ كالمرّيخ في التهابِهِ

وأنت فوق ظهره عُطاردُ

If you honor, they blame the diplomacy

And if you draw near, they withdraw

غرائبٌ من الحِباءِ جُمِعَتْ

بها لك الفوارِكُ الشوارِدُ

Their oaths close off sustenance

While opportunities sigh at their shelter

تبرَّعَ المَلْكُ بها مبتدئاً

وكلُّ بادٍ بالجميل عائدُ

No judgment between them is hoped from the judge

No nonsense or wrangling feared

قد كنتُعيَّفتُ لك الطيرَ بها

مستيقِظاً والحظُّ بعدُ هاجدُ

And why would I desire from their eloquence

Poetry to benefit me, the non-Arabic and Arabic?

وبَرَقَتْ لي في المنى سيوفُها

من قبلِ أن تُبرِزها المَغامدُ

The vast grace you obtained surpassed

What their Muslim earned upon me, and those of the pact

عِلْماً بما عندَك من أَداتِها

وأَنها سيفٌ وأنت ساعدُ

Far from you! One is wretched in grace

Upon a time you are in, while peerless

فلم يَخُنِّي فارسُ الظنِّ ولا

غَرَّتْنِيَ المَخَايِلُ الشواهدُ

Prolonging has made my hearing numb to

Relaying my words and all I endure

وبعدُ لي فيك رجاءٌ ناظرٌ

إلى السماء وحسابٌ زائدُ

My body and patient heart are pierced

By my age's biting fangs

حتى يُشَقَّ للزمان رمسُهُ

وأنت باقٍ والعلاءُ خالدُ

Nor beneath afflictions did excellence remain

Crawling to it the time-lost

بك استقاد الفضلُ ودماؤه

مطلولةٌ وعَزَّ وهو كاسدُ

Residence lacks means for me to manage it

Roads are blocked before my travels

نصرتَهُ والناسُ إمّا جاهلٌ

بحقِّه او عارفٌ مُعاندُ

Does time murder the likes of me vainly

While you are my vengeance and time my pillar?

ورِشْتَ من أبنائه أجنِحةً

طار حَصيصاً ريشُهُ البدائدُ

You are witness to my merit - do not let me

Die jestingly, while you watch

تعطِي وأنت مُعدِمٌ وإنما

يُعطِي أخوك البحرُ وهو واجدُ

Turn with burden towards me a glance

To revive me, its greeting the friendless

زرعتَ عندي نعمةً سالفةً

أنت لهذا الشكر منها حاصدُ

Perhaps - O best called to - it will set right

Something of these corruptions

عَطفاً على ذكرى ووصفاً فخرُهُ

باقٍ عليَّ والزمانُ بائدُ

And take gratefulness from me, for my compensation

Contains what the far-flung ruins hold

ونَظَراً بَدأْتَني برأيه

لو أن باديه إليّ عائدُ

Every order is enforced, so in poetry

For her cast are the amulets

لكن أردتَ الخيرَ لي ودونه

حوائلٌ من زمني حوائدُ

Circulating - travellers spread them

Or settled - her mention fills landmarks

فهل لأرضي لك أن تَبُلَّها

على الجُدوب سُحْبُك الجوائدُ

Speech she sees as faltering or witty

While all are mediums, outstanding

غَرَسْتُ منك بالولاء والهوى

غرْساً فماذا أنا منه حاصدُ

When observing a noble's missed potential

She is the necklaces and wreaths for him

اُنظرْ فقد قدَرتَ في مَظْلَمةٍ

كنتَ على إنصافها تعاهدُ

She carries of your description what the cool breeze

Carries from the garden of sorrow

واقضِ ديونَ المجد فيها وارعَ لي

ما تقتضي الأواصرُ التوالدُ

Rising with it congratulations like stars

No new year or recurring feast passed while shining

ولا تكن حاشاك من معاشِرٍ

تَخذُلُ أقوالَهم العقائدُ

Men perish, but you with it

Enduring the march of time eternal

كانوا يدي وريحُهم راكدةٌ

وأُسرتي والحظُّ عنهم عاصد

Remaining upon you, while what we take

Of reward fades away transient

فحين هبّت عاصفاً رياحُهم

قلَّ الوفيُّ ونَأَى المساعدُ

Praise envied for you by the people

While people are either praisers or envious

غَنيَّتُ أَنْ أسكرَني جفاؤهم

وفي غِنائي لَهُمُ عَرابدُ

أيقتُلُ الزمانُ مثلي هَدَراً

وأنت ثأري والزمانُ عامدُ

أنت بفضلي شاهدٌ فلا أمتْ

هَزْلاً وتضييعاً وأنت شاهدُ

أعدْ مع الإثقالِ نحوي نظرةً

تَنعِشني لحاظُها الردائدُ

لعلّها يا خيرَ مَن يُدعَى لها

تَصلُحُ شيئاً هذه المفاسدُ

وابتعْ بها الشكرَ فعندي عَوضٌ

تَضْمَنُهُ القواطنُ الشواردُ

كلّ مطاعٍ أمرُها مسلِّطٌ

في الشعر ملقاة لها المَقالدُ

سائرة تنشرها الركبانُ أو

عامرة بذكرها المَشاهدُ
