If they describe me, I am wasted in body;
or if they probe me, I am white of liver.
What has weakened my longing and worsened my sickness
is that I voice my love to no one.
I pressed my palm upon my heart because of
sorrow’s searing heat, and doubled over my hand.
Ah, for love! Ah, for my liver!
If I do not die tomorrow, then the day after.
My heart, whenever I remember them, seems
prey caught between a lion’s forelegs.
How deadly parting is to souls—and how
painful to the liver is the loss of the beloved!
I laid myself open to an affliction that
ravaged my very lifeblood and my skin.
Alas, that I should die imprisoned
amid the churning of cares and hidden grief.
Each day my eye gushes—a spring
for an organ dying within my body.
