يَزيدُني ما اِستَزَدتُ مِن صِلَتِه
وَعَن قَليلٍ يَعودُ في هِبَتِه
The more I ask of his bounty, the more he gives me;
yet before long, he takes back his gift.
لَو حُزتُ قَطرَ السَماءِ لَاِنهَمَلَت
عَلَيَّ ظُلماً سَماءُ مَوجِدَتِه
Had I possessed heaven’s rain, down would pour
upon me, unjustly, the sky of his wrath.
كَم زَلَّةٍ مِنهُ قَد ظَفِرتُ بِها
فَقامَ حُبّي لَهُ بِمَعذِرَتِه
How many a fault of his I have caught him in—
yet my love for him rose to plead his excuse.
تُفني اللَيالي وَعيدَهُ وَأَنا
قَريبُ عَهدٍ بِسوءِ مَملَكَتِه
The nights pass away, and so does his threat, while I
am newly acquainted with the harshness of his rule.
