وَما في الأَرضِ أَشقى مِن مُحِبٍّ
وَإِن وَجَدَ الهَوى عَذبَ المَذاقِ
And none on earth is more wretched than a lover,
though he finds love sweet to the taste.
تَراهُ باكِياً في كُلِّ حينٍ
مَخافَةَ فُرقَةٍ أَو لِاِشتِياقِ
You see him weeping at every moment,
for fear of parting, or from longing.
فَيَبكي إِن نَأَوا شَوقاً إِلَيهِم
وَيَبكي إِن دَنَو خَوفَ الفِراقِ
He weeps when they draw far away, yearning for them,
and weeps when they draw near, afraid of separation.
فَتَسخَنُ عَينُهُ عِندَ التَنائي
وَتَسخَنُ عَينُهُ عِندَ التَلاقي
His eye grows hot when they are far apart,
and his eye grows hot when they meet.
