أَبا سعيدٍ وليسَ البعد عنكَ قلىً

ريبُ الزمانِ رقيبٌ ليس يندفعُ

O Abū Sa'īd though we are far apart

The vicissitudes of Time stand guard, inexorable;

إِن كانَ وصلُكَ فرضاً فهو نافلةٌ

مَعَ الرقيبِ فَبعدَ العصرِ يمتنعُ

If to meet were a duty, it would be supererogatory-

After mid-afternoon, with the guard present, it is denied.
