يمّم جيادَ القولِ خيرَ ميمّم
هَذا مجالٌ للهناءِ الأعظمِ
I direct the steeds of eloquence, applause is most fitting here
This is a place for supreme glorification
وَاِنشُر مِنَ التنويهِ كلّ مفوّف
وَاِجرُر منَ التأميلِ كلّ مسهّمِ
And unleash all manner of praise, embellished
And draw out all beautiful imagination, inspired
وَاِنظر محيّا الأنسِ من روضِ الرضى
بزرَ المحاسنِ لَيس بالمتثلّمِ
And look lively, human company is the garden of bliss
Blossoming with the beauty of one free of blemish
وَاِنشق أزاهيرَ السرورِ فإنّما
مَحيا النفوسِ بعرفها المتنسّمِ
And pluck flowers of joy, for the souls are indeed
Revived by their fragrance, gently inhaled
فَالوردُ من تيه يصاعرُ خدّه
مُستبدلاً دينارهُ بالدرهمِ
The roses provoke the cheek with their heady scent
Exchanging their gold coins for silver
وَالنرجسُ الراني الجفون مغازلٌ
للأقحوانِ المُزدهي بتبسّمِ
And the narcissi of languid glances are paramours
To the hearts made merry by their smiles
وَالسروُ قد هُزّت مَعاطف دلّهِ
طَرباً لشدوِ هزاره المترنّمِ
And the cypress trees have fluttered their cloaks coquettishly
Rejoicing to the song of the one humming a tune
وَالدوحُ حيثُ تشبّكت عَذَباتهُ
فَالشمسُ بينَ سُطورهِ كالأنجمِ
And the creeping plants where their tendrils intertwine
The sun shines between their lines like stars
سَحبَ النسيمُ بها بليلَ جناحهِ
سحبَ البغاثِ أسفّ تحت القشعمِ
The breeze snatches them softly in the dark of night
Snatches misery to torment under the armpit
عَطرت رياحينُ البشائِر ذيلهُ
فَغَشى عَرانينَ القلوبِ بمفعمِ
The scent of glad tidings has perfumed its train
Blanketing the hearts with what fills them
حيّاكَ مِن بردِ النسيمِ بهبّةٍ
هبّت لَها مُقل الأماني النوّمِ
Greetings with the cool breeze, a gift
That makes hopeful souls nod off
حَيثُ الفواضلُ والمكارمُ واللّهى
لا يُستطار غرابُها من مجثمِ
Where there is nobility, generosity and divine inspiration
No crow may access its forbidden sanctum
فاِرتد هناكَ مِن الرياضِ أريضها
وَمن الغمائِم كلّ صوب مسجمِ
So turn back from those orchards of bliss
And every side road covered in clouds
فَاليومَ كلّ مؤمّلٍ مِن دهرهِ
عَرفَ الطلاقةِ بعدَ طولِ تجهّمِ
For today each hopeful person
Knows ease after longtime gloom
إنّ الخليفةَ دامَ وارفُ ظلّه
للدينِ وَالدنيا مقيل تنعّمِ
The Caliph, may his shade be well established
For religion and worldly life, bestows comfort
ما زالَ حسنُ بلائهِ وغنائهِ
يُجري الفعالِ على السبيل الأقومِ
The good and bad of his trials persist
Taking events along the rightest path
ما أَعمل التدبيرَ في مستبهمٍ
إلّا وطبّق مفصل المستبهمِ
He does not make decisions blindly
Rather, he unravels the complex matters
يختصّ بالرتبِ الكرامِ ويصطفي
لِذرى المَعالي أكرماً عن أكرمِ
He reserves high office and hand picks
The best descendants for the most sublime posts
يَجتابُ أخلاقَ الرجالِ تفرّساً
كَالجوهرِيِّ يغوصُ لجّ الخضرمِ
He discerns the character of men intently
Like a pearl diver plunging the depths
قَد خصّ جيدَ كريمةٍ لوزيرهِ
بِفريدةٍ ما إن لها من توأمِ
He honored his Minister with a unique jewel
None other exists equal to this precious gem
فَاِعجَب منَ السعدينِ كيفَ تقارنا
في بيتِ عزٍّ بالجلالةِ مدعمِ
So it’s wondrous how good fortune and glory meet
In a glorious house with solid foundations
جيدٌ يُزان بِعقده ويزينهُ
ما أحسَنَ الكُفأينِ عند تنظّمِ
A necklace to match the jewel that adorns it
How excellent is the pairing of two well-matched things!
إن حقّ تهنئة الحريّ برتبةٍ
فَلسائرِ الرتبِ الهناء برستمِ
Congratulations to the noble one on his title
And salutations to all other titles through him
أَمّا إِذا ذُكرَ الكرامُ فإنّه
بَحرٌ يحدّثُ عنه كلّ مترجمِ
But when the generous are mentioned
It is an endless sea spoken of by every guide
ما شِئتَ مِن جودٍ لوِ اِغترف الحيا
منه لسحّ الدهر غير منجّمِ
Whatever measure of generosity you desire
If life draws from its measure, time flows gently
وَتُقىً تهلّل في شبابٍ أدهمٍ
فَجلا دَياجي الغيّ باِبن الأدهمِ
Chivalry dances in brave youth
As the full moon outshines the white dawn
وَإبانةٍ ببنانهِ ولسانهِ
طَلعت بهِ شُهباً حروف المعجمِ
And strong proofs in word and principle
Where letters of the alphabet shine brightly
وَرحوبِ صدرٍ موقعُ الدنيا به
وَقع الهباءةِ مِن محيطِ العيلمِ
With vast capacity, the world but a place in it
And simplicity descends from the Ifriqi sea
قَد وطّأ الإلهام منهُ للتقى
ما لا يوطّئهُ مقال معلّمِ
Divine inspiration flows from him to the reverent
Not what a tutor’s lesson imparts
ما ظاهرُ الدنيا لهُ بمولّهٍ
عَن باطنِ الأخرى ولا بموهّمِ
He does not equate the fleeting life with principles
Or the eternal one as fanciful delusion
فَتراهُ أوسعَ ما يكونُ تشاغلاً
بِالخطبِ أذكر ما يكون لمنعمِ
You find he busies himself to the utmost
With weighty matters rather than luxury
طَلبَ الأمورَ بربّه فتيسّرت
وَعَصى الهَوى فأطاعَ دونّ تجسّمِ
He sought things from his Lord, so they were facilitated
He resisted caprice, obeying without being pictured
لَبسَ السيادَةَ وهو ناسجُ بُردها
وَالفخرُ لبس بقيّةٍ مِن أعظمِ
He wears regalia though he woven its very fabric
Pride wearing but a shred of the greatest
وَالقطعُ للفولاذِ ليسَ بمعتزٍ
إِن هو لَم يُطبع بصورة مخذمِ
It brings no honour if steel is not engraved
With the stamp of the durable mold
أَرخى ذَوائبهُ الوزيرُ المصطفى
أَكرِم بذلكِ منتمى للمنتمي
The Minister let down his braids, ennobling his partisan
Granting the greatest favour to the favoured one
ما زالَ يبعثُ للتكاملِ فضلهُ
وَالفضلُ إِن يكُ في السجيَّة ينجمُ
He continues to distinguish himself in perfection
For the perfect person, his merit shines bright
ويربّه ربّ الحكيم مدبّراً
إِكسيره حذوَ الطبيعة يأتمِ
His Lord, the All-Wise Arranger, guides him
His elixir following the course of nature
لَم يعدُهُ بيت الرئاسةِ واسماً
أَعقابَ كلّ متوّج ومعمّمِ
Glory did not count him among the titles
Of crowns past and the turbans of scholars
حتّى تَقاضَته مَيادين العلى
سَبقاً فَحازَ رِهانها بمطهّمِ
Until the lofty spheres tested him in their arenas
Winning their wager by resolve
فَإِذا اِحتبى فَالفضلُ ثني ردائهِ
وَإِذا سعى فالمجدُ حبل المعصمِ
So if he disputes, virtue folds its gown
If he contends, glory binds his wrist
يَملا النديِّ سماحةً ورجاحةً
وَفصاحةً وفكاهةً بتحشّمِ
He fills the breast with munificence, intelligence,
Eloquence and wit with dignity
حَسَنُ السماعِ وَإِن أفاد فَمُظهراً
علمَ اليقينِ بهيأةِ المستعلمِ
His listening is virtuous, and if he speaks then displaying
Certain knowledge in the guise of one seeking knowledge
يَنبو عنِ العوراءِ لَيس لهفوةٍ
مِنهُ مساغٌ في اللّحاظ ولا الفمِ
He does not divulge ugly matters nor welcomes
Indecency by eye or mouth
ما نالَ قدحَ القدحِ في مستهدفٍ
أَبداً لديهِ إجالة المستقسمِ
He never maligns anyone targeted
Granting reprieve to the one allotted fate
شِيمٌ تَروم إحاطةً في وصفها
فَترومُ أسباب السماء بسلّمِ
It is reputable to comprehend in description
Then to seek the means to heavens by ladder
جمعت لفردٍ بالمعلّى فائزٍ
خُلقاً وخَلقاً أحسنا في أعظمِ
He gathered unmatched morals and manners
In creation, the best among the best
ثقفٌ إِذا اِستعلى بصهوةِ سابحٍ
عايَنتَ برقاً يَستطيرُ بضيغمِ
He is clever. When warded by the shield of one who swims well,
You see lightning bolts shot from his pool.
وَإِذا لَوى وجهاً لِكشفِ ظلامةٍ
شاهَدت بدرَ التمّ ضاء بمظلمِ
And when he frowns to reveal some darkness,
You witness the full moon dispelling gloom.
مُستنطقٌ بِالحمدِ كلّ مشاهدٍ
لِكمالهِ مِن مُفصحٍ أو أعجمِ
Every witness compelled to praise his perfection
Whether eloquent or babbling dimwit
مُستحمل من برّه ووفائهِ
ذِممَ الثنا وَالشكر أثقل مغرمِ
Bearing the burden of his righteousness and loyalty
Harder than the blame of the ungrateful creditor
يَفترّ بارقُ وعدِه متألّقاً
عَن عضبِ عزمٍ في الفعال مصمّمِ
The promise of his determination gleams
Over resolute action that persists
وَتسابقُ الهبّات من نفحاته
متّ الوليّ له وأمّ المعدمِ
And gifts race from the breaths of his favour
As family and possessions are willed to him
يا أبيضَ الشيمِ الّتي أبداً على
طُررِ الليالي مثلها لم يرقمِ
Oh you noble of character that shall never
Over the expanse of nights be recorded again
شِعري يديرُ بكأس ذِكرك للنهى
راحاً بِروضٍ للثناء منمنمِ
My poetry turns with the cup of your mention to deter
Taking delight in the garden blossoming
يُثني عَليك ثَنا الحدائقِ نُمّقت
صَفحاتها بطرازِ نوء المرزمِ
Praising you as gardens praise their boughs
Their pages stamped with brilliant decoration
اللّه يَشهدُ أنّ حبّك قَد جرى
مَجرى الحياةِ من الحريص مع الدمِ
God knows my love for you flows
Like a soul inside one impassioned
كُفؤاً بحسنِ شمائلٍ لو أنّها
في البدرِ لم يكلف لِنيل تتمّمِ
Matching your fine traits, if they were
On the full moon, no effort made to grasp them
وَمكارمٍ لولاك لَم يطرق بها
سَمعٌ ولا كحل العيان بميسمِ
And your nobility, if not for you, a sense
Would not perceive, nor eyes with kohl mark them
فَليَهن دستورَ الوزارةِ غرسهُ
تلكَ الصنائعُ في القرار المطعمِ
So let the constitution of governance grow
With your talents embedded in resolute principles
فَلقَد تفتّح رَوضُها عن مزهرٍ
داني الجنى عَطر الشذا المتنسّمِ
For its orchard has blossomed to reveal
Ripe fruit, fragrant breeze redolent
وَلِمثله مَن ليس يخفق ظنّه
وَلمثلِ وسمكِ بغيةُ المتوسّمِ
And it has one befitting it, one whose hopes do not fail
Seeking its thoroughness with fortitude
يا أوحداً حازَ الفضائلَ ثانياً
فَضلَ العنانِ وعطفه عن مأثمِ
O peerless one who alone won all merit Then surpassed the glory of other glorious men
Wait, O carrier of virtue, a moment
مَهلاً بِضمّارِ الفضائلِ برهةً
قَد بدّ شأوُك سَبقَ وصفي المسهمِ
Your prominence preceded my inadequate attempt
I plunged my thoughts into depthless confusion
غَلغلتُ فِكري في غِمار غطمطمٍ
أَجني اِنعكاسَ أشعّة للأنجمِ
To collect rays of light for the stars
Tread softly, and let it return to me, it’s enough
رفقاً بِهِ يرجع إليّ وحسبهُ
وَلَقد تهدّف بالقصور لأسهمِ
That it targets inadequacy with arrows
I assessed both your condition and composition
وازَنتُ بينَ حُلاكمُ ونسيجه
وَهو الصنيعُ فكان دون الألزمِ
Yours the superior craft without doubt
May you accept what I have scrambled as booty
فَعَساكَ تقبلُ ما اِعتثمتُ غنيمةً
ما شبّ مَجدٌ عَن تميمةِ معظمِ
No glory attaches to the mighty amulet
Matching the eye of perfection, and sufficing
يُكفأ بِها عينُ الكمال وتكتفي
مِنها العداةُ بِغيظها المتضرّمِ
The enemy in his burning ire
Today the envious claim you blame
زَعمَ الحسودُ اليومَ أنّك عاتبٌ
لِيروع أَحشائي وَلَو بِتوهّمِ
To frighten me, even by illusion
The envious failed by their words, for the devoted
باءَ الحسودُ بِما يقولُ ولا ذوى
غَرسُ الولاءِ المثمرِ المتنعّمِ
Planted sapling will always bear ripe fruit
I say, deflecting his deception
وَلَقد أَقول تفادياً عن خدعهِ
وَتمسّكاً بِولائكِ المستحكمِ
And adhering to your solid loyalty
I swear by my soul, accustomed to bliss
قَسَماً بما عوّدت نفسي من رضى
لَيست تكدّره دلاء اللوّمِ
Undisturbed by the bucket drawing water
And gentle advice, implicit in subtle rebuke, even if
وَلَطيفِ نصحٍ ضمنَ عتبٍ لو جرى
بِمدارجِ الأنفاسِ لم أتألّمِ
It ran in breath’s passage, I’d bear it
Affection for God made us closer than kin
وَتحابُبٍ في اللّه أَضحى في الورى
لَولاكَ أغربَ مِن غرابٍ أعصمِ
While in the world, we’d be stranger than a solitary bird
My delay in praising you signals no doubt
ما كانَ تَأخيري لمدحكِ مريةً
في أنّكَ الأحرى بكلِّ تقدّمِ
That you are most deserving of high station
I have gained but a portion of your praise
إنّي وحظٌّ مِن مديحكِ مُربئي
عَن حظّ فَضلكَ مِن رداء المعلمِ
Over a shred of your unmatched cloak
My ambitions can’t simply be satisfied
لَيسَت ببارقةِ التبرُّض تكتفي
هِممي فكيفَ بِأوبها عن مغنمِ
With a bolt of lightning from promising clouds
How can an eye endure abandoning its sight
أنّى تطيقُ العينُ هجرَ سوادها
وَالروضُ هجر عهادهِ المتسجّمِ
While the garden forsakes its engraved pillars
Or how can I reject bounty bestowed
أَم كيفَ أَجحد نعمةً أُوليتها
وَلِسانُها بالحالِ أصدق معلمِ
When the case itself speaks truth?
I have no merit unless robed by it
لا شيمَ لي شرفٌ إِذا لم أكسها
شُكراً لأيدي الدهرِ غير مكتّمِ
Gratefully wearing finery of time’s hands
Generosity, dignity and loyalty refuse
تَأبى المكارمُ وَالمروءةُ وَالوفا
وَشوافعُ الإحسانِ كفر المنعمِ
Ingrates who reject the benefactor’s gift
I postponed a middle obligation though time to fulfill it
أَخّرتُ وسطى حانَ وقتُ أدائِها
لأَداءِ نفلٍ إن يؤخّر يحرمِ
Came, delaying extras can forbid them
Trusting your wide pardon, and competing intents
ثِقةً بأنّ العذرَ عندك واسعٌ
وَتزاحُم الغرضين غير مسلّمِ
Cannot justify, this isn’t assumed
My manner may slip from sheer joy
فَلئن هَفا أدَبي سما بقوادمٍ
مِن حسنِ عهدٍ ليس بالمتصرّمِ
Of blessed days not halted
You who applauded my ambitions
أَنتَ الّذي أحمدتَ مورد همّتي
وَكَفيتني في الدهرِ كلّ تهمّمِ
And spared me the worries of time
How you broadcasted my praise to nobles’ ears
كَم قَد صدعتَ بمدحتي سمع العلى
وَوسعتَ هضماً مَن أراد تهضّمي
And tolerated the bites of those who sought to gnaw at me
You cultivated an orchard from your work
أَجنيتَ كفّي مِن صنيعك روضةً
وَالشكرُ شادٍ في رياض الأنعمِ
As gratitude praises bliss’ gardens
These are your magnificent exploits, my poem
هَذي مَآثِركم قَصيدٌ بيتهُ
هرمُ الدهورِ فما له من مهرمِ
Is eternal though ruins all things
Traced with masterpieces as lessons
رُسِمَت بِه غررُ الصنائعِ عبرةً
لِلغابرينَ وآية للمرجمِ
For ancients and signs for pagans
The Wise One with dual names composed it
قد شادهُ ذو الحِكمتينِ مجلّياً
في حكمةِ اليونانِ حكمة جرهُمِ
Reflecting Hellenistic wisdom and Hira’s lore
A house in two parts dated with bliss
بيتٌ بنصفيهِ الهناء مؤرّخٌ
وَبمهملِ النصفين ثمّ بمعجمِ
And two parts informal then alphabet letters
A necklace with the highest jewel of pure glory
عِقدٌ بِأسمى جيد مجدٍ خالصٍ
عقدٌ أجلّ به الهناء لرستمِ
An invaluable necklace honouring Rustam
O you who revive merit leading
يا أيّها المحيي الفضائل بادياً
أَحرارها من أسرِ دهرٍ مغشمِ
Its valiant vanguards from the shackles of oppressive fate
Donned in the gown of praise, also wearing
المكتسي بردَ المحامد سابغاً
وَإِن اِكتسى بالجود برد ملوّمِ
The gowns of munificence threaded by jurists
Your envoy returns rewarded or pioneering
مَغناكَ موفد عائٍد لعوائدٍ
أَو رائد لفرائد لم تتأمِ
Unprecedented spoils not yet realized
You possess ambition which the lofty goals fall short of
لَك همّةٌ تقفُ المعالي دونَها
وَتقول هذا مبلغي فتقدّمِ
Saying this is my limit, so take precedence!
Take it from the pain relieving magic at dawn
خُذها مِنَ السحرِ المحلّل نفثةً
تَنضو الوقارَ عنِ الوقور الأحلمِ
Shedding dignity from the revered forbearing one
Its talk settles deeper in hearts
أَمضى وَأفعل في القلوبِ حديثُها
مِن سهمِ لحظٍ في حشاشة مغرمِ
Than a captivating glance piercing the lovesick one
A charming tone better than the crystal’s ring
لَفظٌ أنمّ من الزجاجةِ ضمنهُ
مَعنىً أرقّ من النسيم الأنعمِ
Containing a purer sense than gentle breezes
Your condition spread until carrying it
نَشرت حلاكَ بحيث أصبحَ حملها
أَسنى بضائعَ منجد أو متهمِ
Became the finest goods from shop or accused one
So remove with favourable winds her veil of excuses
فَأزِح براحِ الجودِ عن إِكرامها
حجبَ المعاذرِ عن أناة تلوّمِ
Shielding coyness from the subtly blaming one
Submit forevermore, for every merit
وَاِضرب لَها خدرَ الصيانَة إنّها
عذراءُ يَصبغها الحياء بعندمِ
You submit forever stays protected
Go quickly to goals, no intermediary
وَاِسلم وَدم دهراً فكلّ فضيلةٍ
مَهما سلمتَ وَدمت فينا تسلمِ
Except the path of honours by niche
Rising by steady glory, its bridle still
تَجري إِلى الغاياتِ ليس بواسمٍ
إلّا سبيل المكرمات بمنسمِ
Held in the firm grasp of the glorious one
تَسمو بجدٍّ لا يزال عنانهُ
في كفّ جدّ بالنجاح مختّمِ
