1. أَهيَ الجِبالُ رَست بها الغبراءُ

    أَم أَنجمٌ حرسَت بِها الخضراءُ

    Are these mountains darkened by dust,

    Or stars guarding the green land?

  2. شمٌّ تَهول على نضارةِ حُسنِها

    فيح كأنّ رِحابها الدهماءُ

    An awe inspiring beauty, smooth and radiant,

    As if its vastness were clouded skies.

  3. تَبدو عَليها لِلحُصونِ ركانةٌ

    ويَروقُ منها لِلقُصورِ رواءُ

    It appears solidly fortified,

    Yet pleasing to palaces.

  4. قَد أَغربت في وَضعها وَتطوّقت

    سوراً وَهل تتطوّق العنقاءُ

    Its unique structure is odd,

    Would the noblest of necks bear an enclosure?

  5. لو ضمّها بينَ المحافلِ محفلٌ

    وَهَوى الخورنق وَاِستحَت صنعاءُ

    Were it hosted among assemblies,

    Even Sana'a would be humbled.

  6. وَلَقامَ سندادٌ يسدّد أَمرها

    وَالحضر يَشهد فيه والزهراءُ

    May its affairs be directed by Sindbad,

    While the Hijaz bears witness.

  7. وَاِهتزّ مِن أهرامِ مِصر قواعدٌ

    وَاِبتزّ من إيوان كسرى بهاءُ

    The foundations of Egypt's pyramids would shake,

    And the brilliance of Ctesiphon's arch would fade.

  8. هَذي عَلى تَقوى تأسّس مَجدُها

    وَعلى الضّرارِ أَشادت القدماءُ

    Its glory is founded on piety,

    As lauded by ancients.

  9. ملئت بآسادِ الكفاحِ وغابُها

    وَزَئِيرها البارودُ والهيجاءُ

    Filled with heroes of struggle and its gloom,

    With the blaze of gunpowder and tumult.

  10. ومدافعٌ لا يستهلُّ جنينُها

    إِلّا إِذا اِهتزّت له الغبراءُ

    Its formidable cannons will not be fired,

    Unless the dusty hills tremble at their blast.

  11. ما أطرقت لِمَخاضِها إلّا وَقَد

    صُعِقَت بنفخةِ صوره الأحياءُ

    None could endure the load,

    Except by its will, did the green land carry it.

  12. ما أبرَقت أَو أَرعَدت إلّا رَمَت

    شهباً لَهنّ من الدخانِ سماءُ

    Do not approach the green land, for its missiles

    Are aimed, and you are within range of the dusty hills.

  13. قُل للّذي جَهلَ الأمير مقامهُ

    لكنّ إِفراط الظهورِ خَفاءُ

    If you refuse, expect lightning bolts,

    Not just showers to extinguish their flames.

  14. يَختالُ بينَ طَريفهِ وتليدهِ

    وَتَجولُ في أعطافِهِ العلياءُ

    They will come when the land is too narrow,

    Only to recede when the earth is vacant.

  15. جَمع النظامُ مفاخِرَ الدولِ الأُلى

    فَتقلّدتها الدولَةُ الحسناءُ

    A lion will confront you with its equals,

    Fighting them at noon when it is dark.

  16. سَتعودُ للإسلامِ كلُّ فضيلةٍ

    وَالعودُ أحمدُ ما له شركاءُ

    It is protected on all sides,

    Its sublime deeds shielded.

  17. ملك منابرُهُ رؤوسُ عداتهِ

    وَسيوفه من فوقها خطباءُ

    The Motto forgot its pact,

    And the Emblem refused turning red, so it is dyed with blood.

  18. يُغنيهِ خوفه أَن تسلَّ سُيوفه

    لَكِنّها أَغمادها الأحشاءُ

    A judge who, when witnessing battle against an absent foe,

    Still passes judgement - even if it will not hold.

  19. شَرُفت بهِ الخضراءُ واِنبَسَطت له

    مُنقادةً فكأنّها الغبراءُ

    He tells stories of all battles,

    While his opponents are still foes.

  20. مَلك أُعزَّ بهِ السلاحُ وأهلهُ

    والعِلمُ ثمّ أذيلتِ الأشياءُ

    He is my patron in battle, but his rule

    Is over the righteous.

  21. وَرَأت محاسنه الملوكُ فأَذعَنت

    لكنّها بِعيونهم أقذاءُ

    They are accustomed to arms, so if tasked

    With discarding them, it would prove difficult.

  22. خَطبوا بهِ فوقَ الدسوتِ وباِسمِهم

    فَوقَ المنابرِ تخطبُ الخطباءُ

    They were provoked until a greeting between them

    Became an honor if they so willed.

  23. وَلَه مزايا الملكِ مُنفرداً بِها

    وَلِغَيرِه الألقابُ والأسماءُ

    They employ death as a wish and purpose,

    As if part of their being.

  24. وتكاد تنطق في مديح صفاته

    عجم وكادت تخرس الفصحاءُ

    A people who, when grasping rifles, lunge

    Recklessly shedding blood copiously.

  25. تكسو محاسنه القريض جمالها

    فتكاد لا تتفاضل الشعراءُ

    Brave horsemen in the heat of frightful events,

    Advance uphill though swords are thirsty.

  26. ويكاد يغفر في قوافي مدحه ال

    إكفاء والإقواء والإيطاءُ

    Daring ones whose coats of mail

    Are white, not rust or stained.

  27. ويجيء بالمعنى الغريب مشاهد ال

    أمر العجيب إذا أعان ذكاءُ

    They arranged their rifles systematically

    And fought with flames, not pebbles or embers.

  28. ملك يريه الحزم أن منامه

    خطأ فليس لعينه إغفاءُ

    Keen observers angry when weapons grumble,

    Quieting them until satisfied.

  29. ويكاد رأيه أن يباري رؤية

    فتلوح قبل وجودها الأشياءُ

    Steadfast charging steeds they lead

    By resolve, not pulling or slackening the reins.

  30. ولقد تواضع أن يكون سريره

    في الأرض وهو مكانه الخضراءُ

    When their neighing rumbles,

    The living are shocked by blasts.

  31. ملك إذا نبت السيوف فحكمه

    عزماته وسلاحه الآراءُ

    They subdued the winds to convey them

    Should the terrain prevent passage.

  32. لم تحمل الغبراء قبل وجوده

    أحدا تطيق لحمله الخضراءُ

    They stormed you galloping upon them, then wheeled

    Swimmingly while your blood trickled.

  33. لا تَقربوا الخضراء إنّ رجومها

    موصودة وكفتكم الغبراءُ

    Wearing black, they signaled battle,

    The black night outshone the white.

  34. وإذا أبيتم فابشروا بصواعقٍ

    غير الّتي يطفي لظاها الماءُ

    With one voice they resembled each other,

    Before the echo returned.

  35. تأتي وقد ضاقت بكم أرجاؤها

    وتعود لما تقفر الأرجاءُ

    Uniform in form,

    Of one spirit said the wise.

  36. أسد توافيكم على أمثالها

    شاكي السلاح نهارهم ظلماءُ

    The rhymes of ignorance arranged their swords

    In a composition made brilliant by order.

  37. من كلّ منطيق بنون وقاية

    حفظت به أفعالها العلياءُ

    They admitted defeat while preserving valor,

    Merely overwhelmed by his light.

  38. ألف الطلا حتّى تناسى عهده

    وأبى البياض فخضبته دماءُ

    A generation of French marked by decadence,

    Yet zealous in guarding Islam.

  39. قاض إذا شهد النزال لغائب

    يمضي ولا يمضي عليه قضاءُ

    Would our land shake with such trembling

    And destruction were he not a foundation?

  40. يروي أحاديث الملاحم كلها

    عمن يجرحهم وهم خصماءُ

    We name it 'the system', how many

    Thousands of stabs has it systematically organized?

  41. هو مالكي في القتال وحكمه

    لكن مواليه من الحنفاءُ

    The hordes of French are like sand

    Blown about, or like clouds of dust.

  42. ألفوا السلاح فأنت لو كلفتهم

    إلقاءه لتعسر الإلقاءُ

    Tell the encroaching French,

    Our lions have gored before whatever they dare.

  43. هزّوه حتّى للتحيّة بينهم

    وبه غدا إكرامهم إن شاؤوا

    But these are passed illusions,

    Whose interpretations will be revealed in good time.

  44. واِستَخدموا منه المنايا والمنى

    فَكأنّه لِجسومهم أعضاءُ

    They mistook heedlessness for folly and took advantage,

    Deeming people equal.

  45. قوم إِذا اِعتقلوا البنادق طاعنوا

    مستلحمين وإن جلت فدماءُ

    Restraining the reins was disgraceful on our part,

    Though they are stupid.

  46. شوس إذا وردوا غمار كريهة

    نهلوا وعلوا والسيوف ظماءُ

    Were it said to be gracious,

    They proved unworthy, ignoble.

  47. الحاسرون شهامة فدروعهم

    بيض الظبى لا الزغف والحرباءُ

    If before invasion, another

    We would have said the motives were boldness and resolve.

  48. نظموا البنادق بالزجاج وناضلوا

    بالشهب لا قذذ ولا سمراءُ

    They advance not out of courage, rather

    The coward proceeds except in war.

  49. رصد إذا غضب السلاح تذمروا

    حتى يعود إلى السلاح رضاءُ

    Upon them is the burden of carrying and sharpening swords,

    While pride and nobility are ours.

  50. ثبتوا على الجرد الجياد تقودها

    عزماتهم لا القبض والإرخاءُ

    Our pride is what gunpowder produces, not

    What tools and desires yield.

  51. دهم إذا ما زمجرت بصهيلها

    صعقت بنفخة صوره الأدماءُ

    He who exceeds his bounds will meet

    The same fate as the misguided fool who mocking earned derision.

  52. قد سخروا منها الرياح تقلهم

    إن حال أخدود ولاح نجاءُ

    Your senses are frozen, yet shall melt

    In the fires of havoc, as if wise.

  53. طرقوكم ركضا عليها وانثنوا

    سبحا وصوب دمائكم دأماءُ

    We disdained your tyranny, avoiding

    Killing you as you lack equals.

  54. لبسوا السواد وأعلموا بأهلة

    وعلا الأسود الليلة القمراءُ

    You tossed into the sea embers of your rage,

    And blew. Is this wisdom?

  55. فإذا أهيب بهم بصوت واحد

    مثلوا ولما ترجع الأصداءُ

    Our hands have grown weary, and from your mouths

    Blows - miserable blowing and wailing.

  56. متناسقي الحركات في أشخاصهم

    روح كما قد قالت الحكماءُ

    We will make you taste the water of swords mixed

    With the blood of victims, as if silver nectar.

  57. نظمت قوافي الجاهلين سيوفهم

    عقدا زهت بنظامه العلياءُ

    The Prince in his forbearance thought

    To deter the likes of you through grace.

  58. ولقد أقروا حاسرين وإنما

    أعياهم في نوره الإطفاءُ

    But now in his might and fierce resolve,

    Both living and dead rightfully dread him.

  59. جيل على الإفرنج منه ضلة

    ولحوزة الإسلام منه حماءُ

    This is Abu Al-Abbas whose reign

    Has honored the green and dusty lands.

  60. أتراه همت أرضنا بتزلزل

    مؤذ فأعجلها به الإرساءُ

    The restorer whom wisdom has revived

    Religion and life - exemplars.

  61. جيل نسميه النظام فكم به

    نظمت ألوفا طعنة نجلاءُ

    Reviver of knowledge after its decline,

    Annihilator of what enemies introduced.

  62. إن الفرنج على تكاثف عدهم

    كالرمل إذ لعبت به النكباءُ

    This supported by soldiers - revered legions -

    Guided under policies of enlightened rule.

  63. بل كالهباء إذ الرمال لربما

    كانت بها في الأعين الأقذاءُ

    Judicious, prudent, complete, glorious, eloquent, gentle fatherly aide giver.

    Bestowing generously.

  64. قل للفرنسيس المجاور أرضنا

    ما قبلكم نطحت أسودا شاءُ

    And graciousness, might, bravery,

    Discernment, perception, and cunning.

  65. لكنها أحلام سلم قد مضت

    ستريكم تأويلها الهيجاءُ

    Bravery with composure, valor,

    Succor, protection, and loyalty.

  66. ظنوا التغافل غرة فتطعموا

    وتوهموا أن الرجال سواءُ

    Perfectly combined, herein is the date

    Of his work and prior excellence.

  67. قد كان إرخاء العنان حقارة

    منا لهم لكنهم بلداءُ

    Frightening both literate and illiterate alike,

    Each aspect has tidings.

  68. وعلى التنزل لو نقول كرامة

    فلقد أبوها إنهم لؤماءُ

    On the 15th of Ramadan constructed

    A great work - lofty and sublime!

  69. لو كان من قبل الإغارة غيره

    قلنا البواعث جرأة وإباءُ

    Blood, prosper, delight, triumph, open, block,

    Judge days however you desire!

  70. لا للشجاعة يقدمون وإنما

    في غير حرب يقدم الجبناءُ

    O you who sees the unseen consequences

    Minds cannot fathom or discern.

  71. فعليهم حمل السيوف وصقلها

    ولنا بهن الفخر والعلياءُ

    How can words match a eulogy of you

    When will poets describe you adequately?

  72. وفخارنا ما تنتج الهيجاء لا

    ما تنتج الآلات والأهواءُ

    Eulogies follow well-trodden paths

    Yet glorifying you is the untrodden way.

  73. إن المجاوز طوره يلقى الذي

    لاقى يسار غره استهزاءُ

    Minds are humbled and fail,

    The eloquent and inarticulate equal.

  74. جمدت قرائحكم وسوف يذيبها

    نار الوغى فكأنكم عقلاءُ

    I devote them to you, if you wished to rebuff

    The green and dusty lands would intercede for them.

  75. ولقد تثاقلنا على طغيانكم

    عن قتلكم إذ ما بكم أكفاءُ

    There is no limit but what we see of your glory,

    Though things all have limits.

  76. أقذفتم في البحر جمرة غيظكم

    ونفختم هل أنتم عقلاءُ

  77. أيديكم أوكت ومن أفواهكم

    نفخ فبئس النفخ والإيكاءُ

  78. سنذيقكم ماء السيوف ممازجا

    لدم الطلى فكأنه الصهباءُ

  79. قد كان في حلم الأمير وصفحه

    ردع يظن لمثلكم إغراءُ

  80. والآن في بطش الأمير وبأسه

    ما يختشي الأموات والأحياءُ

  81. هذا أبو العباس والملك الذي

    فخرت به الخضراء والغبراءُ

  82. هذا المجدد قد أعيد بحزمه

    للدين والدنيا سنى وسناءُ

  83. محيي رسوم العلم بعد دروسها

    ومميت ما قد أحدث الأعداءُ

  84. هذا المؤيد في جنود مهابة

    عمرية راياتها الآراءُ

  85. الحازم الفطن الكمي الماجد الس

    سفط الأبي المنجد المعطاءُ

  86. فرحابة ومهابة وشجاعة

    وفطانة وفراسة ودهاءُ

  87. وشجاعة بسكينة وشهامة

    وإغاثة وحماية ووفاءُ

  88. أكملت جامعها فها تاريخه

    هو والمقدم في الصنيع سواءُ

  89. من أخيفين لكل نصف منهما

    ولمهمل ولمعجم أنباءُ

  90. بالنصف من رمضان نسق جامعا

    عملا ببر ذاك فهو علاءُ

  91. دم وارق واسعد وانتصر وافتح وسد

    واحكم على الأيام كيف تشاءُ

  92. يا أيها الرائي الغيوب عواقبا

    لا تهتدي لصدورها الآراءُ

  93. أنى تفي الأقوال منك بمدحة

    ومتى تقوم بوصفك الشعراءُ

  94. إن المديح مناهج مسلوكة

    لكن علاك طريقة عذراءُ

  95. ولقد تضاءلت العقول بغاية

    فالعي فيها والفصيح سواءُ

  96. وكلت إليك فلو هممت بدفعها

    شفعت لها الخضراء والغبراءُ

  97. لا حدّ إلّا ما نرى من مجدكم

    وَلَقد تحدّ فَتدرك الأشياءُ
