أُقضّي زَماني بينَ صدٍّ وهجرانِ

عَلى حسمِ آمالي وصَبري ظهيرانِ

I spend my time between estrangement and rejection

My hopes and patience as my only companions

هوىً ونوىً هَذا لِقلبي متلفٌ

وَذاكَ لِدمعِ الجفنِ في دمهِ الثاني

One love ruins my heart while the other

Makes my tears flow for the second time

أَودُّ رُقاداً كَي يزورَ خيالُكم

وَتَأبى النوى إلّا تفارقَ أَجفاني

I wish for sleep so your image appears

But my tearducts refuse to part from my eyes

فَيا دمعَ أَجفاني وَيا حرّ أَضلُعي

أَجدّكما لا ترثيانِ لأشجاني

Oh tears of my eyes and ache of my ribs

You don't mourn my sorrows

عَجبتُ وَأيم اللّه كيفَ اِئتلفتُما

وَما أَنتما إلّا مدى الدهرِ ضدّانِ

I wonder, by God, how you two befriended each other

When you've been opposites for so long
