وَما الألفُ إلّا واحدٌ فَإِذا سَما

إِلى رُتبةٍ أَعلى يكونُ بها ألفا

The letter Alif is but one, yet when it aims

To rise to higher ranks, it becomes a thousand.

إِذا ما مَزَجناها بلطفِ طباعِ من

يَجودُ بِها عذباً نسيلُ بها لطفا

When we mix it with the gentle nature of one

Who flows with it sweetly, it gently flows as kindness.

وَقَد علمَ التثليثُ أنّك روحهُ

وَنحنُ أبٌ واِبنٌ فَلن نعدمَ الألفا

The Trinity knows that you are its soul

And we are a father and son, so we'll never lack accord.

وَلكنّها أَنأى إِذا ما تَطاوَلت

فَتَدنو إِليها في تَقاصُرِها قَطفا

But it distances when it becomes haughty,

So draw near to it when it becomes humble and pluck its fruits.

فهذا لسانُ الشمعِ صاحَ عَلى الدّجى

فَأدبرَ لا يَدري الأمامَ ولا الخَلفا

Thus the tongue of the candle cried out in the darkness

And retreated, knowing neither front nor back.
