لَعَمرُكَ ما أَهوَيتُ كَفّي لِرِيبَةٍ

وَلا حَمَلَتني نَحوَ فاحِشَةٍ رِجلي

By your life! My hands have never intentionally done wrong

Nor have my feet led me to shameful acts

وَلا قادَني سَمعي وَلا بَصَري لَها

وَلا دَلَّني رَأيي عَلَيها وَلا عَقلي

Neither has my hearing nor sight led me that way

Nor has my reason or sense guided me there

وَإِنّيَ حَقا لم تُصِبني مُصيبَةٌ

مِنَ الدَهرِ إِلّا قَد أَصابَت فَتىً قَبلي

Indeed, no calamity has befallen me

That has not already afflicted someone before me

وَلَستُ بِماشٍ ما حَيِيت لِمُنكَرٍ

مِنَ الأَمرِ لا يَمشي إِلى مِثلِهِ مِثلي

As long as I live, I shall not walk to forbidden things

That one like me does not walk to the like of them

وَلا مُؤَثِراً نَفسي عَلى ذي قرابَةٍ

وَأَوثِرُ ضَيفي ما أَقامَ عَلى أَهلي

Nor do I put myself before my next of kin

I prefer my guest while he stays with my family
