أَقَرَّ اللَهُ عَيني إِذ دَعاني

أَمينُ اللَهِ يَلطُفُ في السُؤالِ

My eye was delighted when he called me

The trustee of God is gentle in asking

وَأَثنى في هَوايَ عَلَيَّ خَيراً

وَيَسأَلُ عَن بَنِيَّ وَكَيفَ حالي

And he spoke well of my love for him

And asked about my children and how I was

وَكَيفَ ذَكَرتُ حالَ أَبي خُبَيبٍ

وَزِلَّةَ فِعلِهِ عِندَ السُؤالِ

And how I remembered the state of my father Khubayb

And his stumbling in answering questions

هُوَ المَهزِيُّ خَبَّرناهُ كَعبٌ

أَخو الأَخبارِ في الحِقَبِ الخَوالي

He is the weakener, Ka'b informed us
