طَرِبَ الفُؤادُ فَهاجَ لي دَدَني
لَمّا حَدَونَ ثَوانِيَ الظُعنِ
My heart was disturbed, so it raged against me
When the cheek's beauty aimed its arrows at me.
وَالعيسُ أَنّى هِي تُوَجِّهُهُ
شَأَماً وَهُنَّ سَواكِنُ اليَمَنِ
And where might the fawn head to
Except to Yemen's most verdant valleys?
ثُمَّ اِندَفَعنَ بِبَطنِ ذي عُبَبٍ
وَنَكَأنَ قَرحَ فُؤادي الضَمِنِ
Then it struck with a sand-grouse's belly
And tore open the wounds deep in my heart.
