1. الحسنُ يأمرُ والعُشّاقُ تأتَمِرُ

    فَلَيسَ للَّومِ وجهٌ لا وَلا أَثرُ

    Beauty commands, and lovers obey

    No blame or trace of fault

  2. وَلا ملامَ على اهل الجمال اذا

    صدوا فهم منهُ بالإِدلال قد أُمروا

    For people of beauty if they shun

    By indulgence they were ordered so

  3. وَبي رشاً كان مأمورَ البها فَغَدا

    وُهُوَ الأَميرُ مُطاعاً امرهُ الخطِرُ

    Yesterday he was nothing special

    Now the commander, his word momentous

  4. مليكُ حسنٍ على عبد الغَرام سطا

    فكان في كل حالٍ شأنهُ الظفرُ

    King of perfect beauty over love's slave

    In all cases his affair is triumphant

  5. لما رأَيتُ ندى نيسانَ في صَدَفٍ

    من فيهِ قلتُ لِنَفسي هَهُنا دُرَرُ

    When I saw April's dew in a seashell

    I said here are pearls

  6. وإِذ رأَيتُ الثريّا ضمن مبسمِهِ

    قلتُ المَجرَّةُ فَبِهِ ماؤُها الخَصِرُ

    And when I saw a partridge amidst its meadow

    I said a starry river, its water a waist

  7. فافترَّ من عَجبٍ واهتزَّ معطفُهُ

    عُجباً وَقالَ لِهَذا وردهُ عَسِرُ

    He was amazed and his cloak fluttered

    Amazed, saying this rose is difficult

  8. وَقلت للصَحب هَذا ليل طُرَّتِهِ

    ايضاً فهل بعدٌ ريبٌ أَنَّهُ قَمَرُ

    I told my friends this is his radiant night

    Is there any doubt that he is the moon?

  9. حلو الوصال ولكن لست اعرفُه

    فالضدُّ بالضدِّ عند الجَهلِ يُختَبَرُ

    Sweet is union but I know it not

    Opposites by opposites the ignorant assay

  10. بادي البشاشة الّا اذ أُقابِلُهُ

    فيوتِرُ القوسَ لكن ما لَها وترُ

    All smiles unless I face him

    His bow recoils though it has no string

  11. بل كُلُّ اعضائِهِ نَبلٌ وكليَ في

    غَرامِهِ أَكبُدٌ بالشَوقِ تَستعرُ

    All his limbs are grace and in his love

    Livers aflame with yearning

  12. وان يغِب فسهامُ الشوقِ ترشقني

    في القرب خَوفٌ وَفي شَحطِ النوى خَطَرُ

    If he is absent, arrows of longing strike me

    In nearness, fear, and in the cup's rim, peril

  13. ما طالَ في حبِّ ذيّاك الرَشا زَمَني

    الا ومنهُ لآمال اللِقا قِصَرُ

    However long in love of your cheek the joy

    Only from it hopes of meeting are short

  14. مثل اليراعةِ في كَفِّ النَجيبِ وكم

    تَوَدُّ لَو اشبهتها البيضُ والسُمُر

    Like spontaneity in the noble one's palm

    How it wishes to resemble white and brown

  15. تَجري البراعةُ فيها منهُ مُحييةً

    لَها فَنُفصح ما من دونِهِ حَصَر

    Spontaneity flows through it giving it life

    Beyond it no eloquence can be found

  16. مَن كانَ يُنكِرُ أَنَّ العودَ في يَدِهِ

    يَندى فيُثمِرُ هَذا العودُ والثمرُ

    Who would deny that the lute in his hand

    Flowers and bears fruit, this lute and its fruit

  17. أَو قال لا بدَّ دون الشهد من إِبَرٍ

    للنحل ذا شهدُها ما دونهُ إِبَرُ

    Or say, without honey there can be no bees

    Their honey beyond it, no bees

  18. مهذَّبُ اللَفظِ وَالمَعنى اذا كَدرَت

    موارِدُ الحسنِ لم يلحقهما كدرُ

    Eloquent in word and meaning, should sources

    Of beauty be troubled, no turbidness reaches them

  19. وَكُلُّ وردٍ فعنهُ يُبتَغى صَدَرٌ

    وعن ورودهما لا يُبتَغي صَدَرُ

    Every rose its fragrance is sought

    And from their roses no fragrance is sought

  20. راحٌ لأَرواحِ أَنفاسِ النفوس عَلى

    رَيحانِ انسٍ اريجٍ نشرُهُ العَطِرُ

    A relief for the spirits of souls' breaths

    Upon a basil of intimacy, its scent dispersed

  21. وَرُبَّ كأسٍ سَقاني من سُلافتِهِ

    صَحَت وقد رشفتها النَفسُ والبصرُ

    Many a cup has made me drink of its purity

    Healthy, though lips and eyes have sipped it

  22. تَضَمَنَّت من صفاتِ الخمرِ اعذبها

    مِمّا يَلذُّ بهنَّ العقل والنظرُ

    Containing the sweetest qualities of wine

    That please mind and sight

  23. يا من تكلَّف لي مدحاً أَفيهِ بِهِ

    لانَّ باعيَ في الإِيفاء معتذِرُ

    O you who obliged me with praise, does it contain

    Because my seller in loyalty is excused?

  24. قَصيدَةٌ قصدَت لي فاِنثنيتُ بِها

    ايتهُ لكن لعمري لستُ افتخرُ

    A poem intended for me, so I was folded into it

    Its verses, but by my life, I do not boast

  25. اذا افتخرتُ ادَّعيتُ الفضل لي ولَهُ

    عين التفضل منها عنديَ الاثرُ

    If I boast, I claim superiority for myself yet for him

    The essence of superiority with me is but trace

  26. انتَ النَجيبُ مسمى اسمٍ تليقُ بِهِ

    لَم يُحصِ وصفَكَ الّا وَهوَ مُختَصِرُ

    You are the noble one, named with a name befitting you

    Your description cannot be encompassed except when summarized

  27. جارَيتُهُ فاِختصرتُ الوصفَ منك وان

    قُلتُ النَجيبُ كفاني وهو مُقتَصَرُ

    I took the shortcut in describing you, and if I said

    The noble one, it sufficed me, and that is enough
