أجيري الذي بهواك استجارا

محبٌّ عليه غرامكِ جارا

My love who sought refuge in your love

A lover burdened by his passion for you

رأى زرقةً بين عينيك قد

وسعت السماء بها والبحارا

He saw a blueness in your eyes that

Had expanded the sky and the seas

فأعطاك قلباً ونفساً وعقلاً

وفكراً وهذا الشباب خيارا

So he gave you his heart, his soul, his mind

His thoughts and his youth as the best choice

إذا انعكس النور من مقلتيك

أضرم بين الجوانح نارا

If the light reflects from your eyelashes

It ignites a fire in his heart

وإن رفرف السحر في شفتيك

ابتساماً فرفرف قلبي وطارا

And if the magic flutters on your lips

Smiling, so does his heart flutter and fly

أرى أن روحي قد عُلِّقت

بمثل نثير الهباء مثارا

I see my soul has been suspended

Like a wisp of vapor set free

وإن الزمان توقف عن سي

ره وترى قبلها الدهر سارا

As if time stopped in its track

And sees the eternal time has marched on

وأَنَّ الحياة تجلت وأن النعيم

بدا والشقاء توارى

And that life has shone and bliss appeared

While misery has hidden away

وأن لا صباح وإن لا مساء

وإن لا ظلام وإن لا نهارا

That there is no dawn and no dusk

No darkness and no daylight

تبارى بنفسي معاني الوجود

سوى الحب فهو الذي لا يباري

The meanings of existence vie

With my soul except for love which has no equal

وما الحب في العمر ألا محيطٌ

على قطبه فلك العمر دارا

And what is love in life but an ocean

Around whose pole the ship of life revolves

ملكتُ بقلبي حبنك وهو

كنوزٌ فما عدت أخشى افتقارا

I have captured your love in my heart

A treasure so I do not fear poverty

وعمري في البعد عنك عثارٌ

وعنك لستُ أخافُ العثارا

And my life away from you is in ruins

While with you I do not fear devastation

فمن ناظريك المنى تستهلُّ

إلى النفس كالنجم حين أنارا

So from your eyes my wishes set out

To my soul like stars when they shine

وكم عبث بالنهى مقلتاك

فهام الفؤاد وضل وحارا

And how your eyelashes tempted

My heart that strayed confused and perplexed

وقبل الهوى كان عقلي صحيحاً

فلا تسألي بعده كيف صارا

Before passion my mind was sound

So do not ask how it has become

خذي من فؤادي عواطف صدري

فقد ضج صدري بهن وثارا

Take from my heart the passions of my chest

For it has roared and erupted

طمت مثل ماءٍ طمى في الحياض

ولكنه لا يُصيبُ انحدارا

I swelled like tumultuous water

But does not cascade downhill

عشقتك حتى فقدتُ القوى

بحرب الورى لا أروم انتصارا

I loved you until I lost all strength

In people’s war I do not seek triumph

أدافع السنة الناس عنك

وعني وهي تحاكي الشفارا

I defend you from people year after year

And myself while they backbite

فتجرح هذي الجسوم حِراراً

وتجرح تلك النفوسَ حرارا

Inflicting wounds of ardour here

And wounds of ardour there

فديتك هذا الورى ليس يفهم

إلّا لجاجَ الضلوع أوارا

My love, this world does not understand

Except the burns of ardent ribs

وإضرامَ جسمٍ وإطفاءَه

بما فيه سرُّ البقاءِ توارى

And the inflammation and healing

Of a body, a secret of survival hides

وهل ي الورى غيرُ إطماعهم

يدارونها وهي ليست تدارى

And is there anything in this world

That they desire and yet does not elude?

وحب بطانتُه الكبرياءُ

تبطَّنَ منهم نفوساً صغارا

And a love lined with arrogance

Has crept into their small souls

وشرط المحبة في الكون أن

تعيدَ صغار النفوس كبارا

And the condition of love in the world is

To make small souls great

إلا أنني بينهم عنهم

بعيدٌ كأني سكنتُ القفارا

Except that I am far from them

As if I inhabited the deserts

أُشاغل قلبي فاسقي به

غراسَ هواكِ وأرجو الثمارا

I preoccupy my heart so irrigate it

With your love’s saplings hoping for fruit

وما هي إلا رضاكِ وأَن

تُجيري الذي بهواك استجارا

And it is nothing but your consent

And that you give refuge to the one who sought refuge in your love
