إذا تعاميتَ عن ضياءٍ

فلا يَمَسُّ الضياءَ شينُ

If you turn away from a shining light,

The light is not tarnished by your disdain.

وإن تناسيتَ صدقَ قولٍ

فإن ذاك النسيانَ مينُ

And if you forget the truth once spoken,

Such obliviousness is but a flaw in you.

وكلُّ خُلفٍ بالوعدِ ضعفٌ

وكل صعبٍ عالجتَ هينُ

To break a promise betrays only weakness,

And obstacles that seemed unbreachable

فلا تبادر بسوءِ ظنٍّ

وإن تكن شكَّكتك عينُ

Are overcome. So do not be quick to think ill,

Even if your own eyes invite distrust.

فرب فحمٍ يكون ماساً

وبعضِ صخرٍ هو اللجينُ

For charcoal can ignite to glowing embers

While some rock will remain unyielding.

دارِ جميع الأنام تُمدح

فإن مدح الأنام زينُ

The home all people share is praised

When people's praise adorns it.

ولا تهاترهم فتغرم

رجاءَهم فيك وهو دينُ

Do not reject them lest you lose

The hope they place in you - a debt yet unpaid.

قد يُكسر العودُ وهو قاسٍ

ويُعشق الغصن وهو لينُ

The rigid branch is the one that breaks;

The supple boughs are those we love.
