1. تسائلني ما الحب قلت عواطفٌ

    منوعة الأجناس مركزها القلبُ

    I asked, "What is love?" I said, "Emotions

    Of various kinds centered in the heart."

  2. فقالت ولكن كنههُ قلتُ ما له

    لدى البحث كنهٌ يستفاد ولا حسب

    She asked, "But what is its essence?" I said, "It has

    No essence that can be known or measured."

  3. وكلٌّ له حبٌّ لأن تضارب ال

    عواطف لا قولٌ يفيه ولا كتب

    And everyone has a love because the

    Conflicting emotions cannot be captured in words or books.

  4. سكتُّ أجابت قل فقلت ألم أقل

    عواطف قلبٍ بعضها شَبِمٌ عذب

    I fell silent. She responded, "Say something!"

    So I said, "Did I not say emotions of the heart?

  5. ومنها التي تسري كنارٍ مذيبةٍ

    ومنها التي تسلي حياة الذي يصبو

    Some are gentle and sweet, some flow

    Like molten fire, some comfort the longing soul,

  6. وما الحب إلا رابط الكون كله

    فلم يخلُ منه الفدم والجهبذ النَدب

    For love is the bond of the whole universe,

    Even rocks and towering mountains are touched by it.

  7. كان بني الدنيا بروج دوائر

    منظمةُ الترتيب وهو لها قطب

    The spheres of the world were set in orbits,

    Arranged in order with love at the axis,

  8. فيحفظ بين العالمين توازناً

    ليبقى لها معنىً كما خلَق الرب

    Maintaining balance between the worlds

    So that they have meaning as the Lord created them.

  9. وأسرارُه في القوتين اللتين لا

    تزيداننا علماً هما الدفع والجذب

    Its secrets lie in the two forces—attraction and repulsion—

    Which teach us nothing more though we seek knowledge.

  10. ومن فهم الحسنِ الصميم فإنما

    دعاه إليه واستقل له الحب

    Whoever understood true beauty invited it in,

    And love made its home within them.

  11. على أنه لا غصب فيه لأنه

    يجيءُ اختياريّاً يعيب به الغصب

    Yet there is no coercion, for it comes

    Freely, not imposed, invalidating imposition.

  12. فلم يُرضها هذا الكلام وأقبلت

    عليَّ بوجهٍ خده ناعم رطب

    My words did not satisfy her. She turned to me,

    Her soft, moist cheek against mine, and said

  13. وقالت أطل عنه الحديثَ فإنني

    أحس فؤادي قد تناوله الرعب

    "Stop this talk! It fills my heart with dread."

    I said, "Ask the birds in their thickets,

  14. فقلتُ سلي الأطيارَ في وكناتها

    إذا لعبت ماذا أثار بها اللعب

    When they play, what stirs them in their play?

    Ask the garden's flowers about their scents

  15. سلي زهراتِ الروض عن نفحاتها

    إذا ما غصن الروض وهو شجٍ صبُّ

    When the wind stirs the boughs of the wounded trees.

    Ask the morning breeze, sighing lightly,

  16. سلي نسمات الصبح حين تنهدت

    خوافتَ تشجيها الأزاهر والقضب

    Stirring the flowers and grasses.

    Ask the streams what they say

  17. سلي جاريات الماءِ عما تذيعه

    عن الترب أو ماذا يقول لها الترب

    To the banks, and what do the banks say back?

    Ask seedlings bursting from the soil—

  18. سلي الأثلاثَ النابتات من الثرى

    وقد كنَّ حَبّاً كيف قد نبت الحب

    Weren't they formed from love? How did love grow?

    Ask the surging waves calling out

  19. سلي زاخرات الموج وهي تواصت

    إلى نغمات السحب إذ درَّت السحب

    In rhyme to the rhythm of the clouds.

    Ask the shining stars with the moon between them

  20. سلي ساطعات النجم والبدرُ بينها

    بدا وهي سرب كيف يأتلف السرب

    Appearing—how does the flock harmonize?

    Ask the rock watered by the mist's tears

  21. سلي الصخر يسقيه الندى بدموعه

    فيجثو سعيداً زاهياً فوقه العشب

    As it crouches happily with grass above it.

    Ask the sun setting into the sea, her husband—

  22. سلي الشمس إذ تأوي إلى البحر زوجها

    مساءً لماذا دار بينهما العتب

    Why did they quarrel as evening came?

    Ask the frightened night over the fading moon

  23. سلي الليل مرتاعاً على البدر آفلاً

    كأَنَّ له لبّاً وقد خَفَتَ اللبُّ

    As if she had lost a dear one.

    Ask the dawn weeping, ask the horizon by name,

  24. سلي الصبح إذ يبكي سلي الأفق باسماً

    سلي النور فوق الكون يجري وينصبُّ

    Ask the light flowing and pouring over the worlds.

    Ask your listening heart, ask your soul

  25. سلي قلبك المصغي إليَّ وروحكِ الَّ

    تي هي أختُ القلب تصبو كما يصبو

    That aspires like my heart aspires.

    Ask religion and worldly life, ask earth and heaven,

  26. سلي الدين والدنيا سلي الأرض والسما

    سلي من له قلبٌ ومن ما له قلب

    Ask the one who has a heart, and one who has no heart—

    They will tell you love is a mystery

  27. يُخبِّركِ إن الحبَّ سرٌّ بدت له

    معانٍ ولكن دون جوهره حجب

    Whose meanings are visible, though its essence is veiled."

    She wavered as if to cry but did not sob,

  28. فقالت وهمَّت بالبكاء وما اشتفت

    ولكن ولكن بعد ذلك ما الحب

    And said, "What then, after all this, is love?"
