1. راح ابن إبراهيم فرع العلى

    فعطلت منه عيون الحُلى

    Ibn Ibrahim's son went away,

    And thereby dimmed the eyes of beauty.

  2. مات وأيام الصبا غضةٌ

    والعمرُ رخصٌ ناغمٌ أقبلا

    He died while his youth still fresh,

    His life but newly begun.

  3. مات وفي الدوح حماماتُه

    سواجع قد فقدت بلبلا

    He died while his doves in the orchard

    Still grieved for the loss of his melody.

  4. تبكي وتستبكي عليه الندى

    دمعاً رخيصاً لسواه غلا

    The dew weeps and laments for him,

    With easy tears none else could stir.

  5. الغصن في روضته ذابلٌ

    لموتِ غصنٍ عزَّ أن يذبلا

    The branch in the garden withered

    At the death of the branch it loved.

  6. والأفق مربدُّ الضيا شاحبٌ

    والنجمُ موّارُ السنا أجفلا

    The horizon grew pale at his loss,

    The stars and moon lost their sparkle.

  7. والبدر رحّالٌ بابراجه

    يسألُ عن بدرٍ غدا في البلا

    The moon in its phases asks

    About a moon that set in the dark.

  8. أنزلَ في بطن الثرى بعد أن

    كانت له أرواحُنا منزلا

    He descended into the earth's embrace

    After our hearts were his dwelling.

  9. كان مزيلَ الهم إيناسُه

    واليومَ مغنى الإنس منه خلا

    His company once lifted care,

    But now humankind want his song.

  10. قولوا لسالي ودنا كارهاً

    واللَه ما منا فؤادٌ سلا

    Say to his friends, loving him still,

    By God, no heart is without sorrow!

  11. يا مطربَ الرفقة في محفلٍ

    قد كان يشجو صوتُك المحفلا

    O singer to his circle of friends,

    Your voice brought joy to the gathering.

  12. صوتك للداءِ دواءٌ به

    يشفى ويشقى العاشقُ المبتلى

    Your voice was a cure for sickness

    That healed the love-torn sufferer.

  13. لهفي على يا ليل منه وقد

    كانت بها الليلاتُ بيض الطلى

    My longing for the nights with him!

    Once the brightest of dawns were dim.

  14. لهفي على عمرك وهو الذي

    بدا غزيرَ الخير لو أمهلا

    Longing for your life - if only

    It had been given more days to live!

  15. لهفي على روحكَ بنتِ الرجا

    أوصافها ساطعةٌ مندلا

    Longing for your soul, daughter of hope!

    Radiant virtues streamed from it.

  16. علمٌ بروض الصدر دوحاتُه

    تسقي النهى أغراسها سلسلا

    Knowledge in the garden of your heart

    Watered wisdom's saplings endlessly.

  17. كيف حواها القبر في ضيقه

    والبحرُ لا تحويه رُحبُ الفلا

    How can the narrow grave now contain

    What the ocean's breadth failed to hold?

  18. الفضلُ والمعروف قد يُتِّما

    واللطفُ والرقة قد عطلا

    Merit and kindness have now waned;

    Grace and gentleness are no more.

  19. يا أهله لا تسبلوا مدمعاً

    فالفجر عنكم دمعَه أسبلا

    O people, do not weep,

    For dawn itself is in tears for him.

  20. لا تندبوا فالطير ندّابةٌ

    لا تعلوا فالغيث قد أعولا

    Do not mourn excessively,

    For clouds and rain already wail.
