أما المحب فمثلما علمت
حرقٌ تزيد وأضلعٌ تغلي
As for the lover, as you know
A burning that grows, ribs that boil
ذهب الربيع وليس يعقبه
إلا لوافع نارها تصلي
Spring has gone with no return
Except for the prayers of its fire
تصفرُّ منها كلُّ نابتةٍ
في الأرض أو في القلب والعقل
Every plant withers from it
On earth, in heart, mind and body
والجسم يبليه الهوى وإذا
زاد الهوى فالروح ما يبلي
Passion wears out the body, and if
Passion grows, the soul knows no wear
قولوا لها عيناك فاضحتا
قلبي بسحر الحب والكحل
Say to her, your eyes have exposed
My heart to love’s sorcery and kohl
كأسان كان الموتُ خمرهما
القلب يشربها ويتسحلي
Like two cups whose drink was death
My heart drinks, melts and dissolves
والعمر طولٌ في العذاب ولن
أرضى بأَن أَفنى على مهل
Life is long in agony, and I'll
Not be content to die slowly
زيدي جوىً أَزدَد عليكِ أسى
كيما أعجل في الهوى قتلي
Give me more love, I'll give you more grief
So I may hasten love's murder
كم باذلٍ من نفسه فُقدت
منه بلا شكرٍ على البذل
Many wasted themselves, and from them
No thanks for the waste was gained
ومحبةٍ تشقي وتتعس إذ
في العمر لم تنزل على أهل
A love that suffers and agonizes when
In life, it fell not on kin
ما كان إلّا النبلُ باعثها
يا هند لا حبٌّ بلا نبل
Naught but nobility drove it
O Hind, no love's without nobility
أسمى العواطف ليس يفهمهما
بين الورى إلا أولوا الفضل
The finest passions, none understand
Among mankind, save the noble
فعلى م تقطعني وما وصلت
هندٌ ولا قطعٌ بلا وصل
Why do you cut me off, when you haven't connected
No bond or break, O Hind, without a bond
سل عن معاني الكبرياء ولا
تعتب فلن تسلو ولن تُسلي
Ask about the meaning of pride, and don't
Reproach, you'll get no answer or peace
وأقذف بهذا القرب في لججٍ
للصدر طاميةٍ من الجهل
And I toss this closeness into turbulent
Seas, ignorant and blind of heart
وأظلم شبابَكَ فهو عارية
ستردها يوماً بلا مطل
And darken your youth, which is but
A loan you'll reclaim one day, no delay
