يا آية النور فدتكِ النجوم

أنرتِ عمراً كدَّرته الهموم

O sign of light, I sacrifice the stars for you

You brightened a life darkened by worries

نورك جالي الصدر نافي الأسى

ملطفُ الأوجاع شافي الكلوم

Your light filled my chest, dispelling sorrow

Soothes pains, heals agonies

إذا تبسمتِ ولم تبرحي

باسمةً فرَّجتِ كل الغموم

If you smile and linger

With a smile, you relieve all worries

أنتِ بردٌ وسلامُ

أنت شوقٌ وهيامُ وسعاده

You are coolness and peace

You are longing and infatuation and happiness

لمحبٍ قد تفانى

فيك حباً واِفتتانا وعباده

For a lover who is devoted

To you in love, fascination and worship

أنتِ تجرّين خطاه إلى

مرابعٍ فيها الشذا والنسيم

You make his steps lead

To meadows of aroma and breeze

أنتِ إذا استسقاك أَسقيته

من منهل الروح الطهور الكريم

If he asks you for water, you quench his thirst

From the fountain of the pure, generous soul

أنتِ إذا استعطاك أعطيتِه

نظرةَ سعدٍ هي كنزٌ عظيم

If he begs you, you give him

A look of bliss that is a great treasure

إنما أنت الأمل

جل قدراً واكتمل وتحقَّق

You are but hope

Exalted, fulfilled and realized

وتجلى ناشراً

منكِ نوراً عاطراً يتألَّق

Manifesting from you

A fragrant, splendid light

قد حسدتكِ النيراتُ التي

عليكِ في أفق الهيولي تحوم

The planets that revolve around you

In the horizon of the firmament envy you

لما بك الجَدُّ غدا قائماً

وكل جدٍّ في الهوى لا يقوم

When time was serious, it rose to stand

And all seriousness in passion does not last

ودام فيك الحسن رغم الورى

والحسن شيءٌ في الورى لا يدوم

And beauty in you remained despite the world

And beauty is something in the world that does not last

قد بدا نورُ بهائِك

مثل أنوار الملائك أزليّا

The light of your glory appeared

Like the eternal lights of angels

للهدى يحوي فنوناً

فتعالى أَن يكونا بشريّا

Containing arts of guidance

Come, so we can make it human

لم يفهم الناسُ سناك الذي

أطلَّ وهو الصبحُ زاهٍ وسيم

People did not understand your brilliance that

Rose like the radiant, handsome dawn

والناس في جهلهم أَغفلوا

مجالي الحسن الصحيح الصميم

And people in their ignorance overlooked

The truth of my perfect, intrinsic beauty

جازيتِهم أَنهم أبصروا

ولم يروا وهو مصابٌ جسيم

I punished them for seeing

Yet not seeing, a grave fault

يفهم الحسنَ محبُّ

قلبه في الحسن صبُّ يتعامى

The lover understands beauty

His heart pours in beauty, turns a blind eye

عن شؤون العمر طرّا

فهو في الحب استقرّا وأقاما

To the concerns of life completely

For he settled and stayed in love

أكسبه الحسنُ معاني الهدى

مغنيةً عن فانات العلوم

Beauty endowed him with meanings of guidance

Singing of ephemeral knowledge

فانطلق العقل وهو ما

بين الورى قد قيَّدته الجسوم

So the mind broke free, though it was

Among creatures, shackled by bodies

وصار منها شعلةً نارها

كأنها في القدس نارُ الكليم

And from it became a flaming torch

As if it were the fire of the Almighty in the Holy of Holies

بك يستهدي السبيلا

وينالُ المستحيلا كلُّ هائم

With you, he seeks the path

And attains the impossible, every wanderer

إذ أَصابَ الرفدَ كهلٌ

من عطايكِ وطفلٌ في التمائم

For he attained sustenance, a mature man

From your gifts, and a child at play

برزتِ في الفردوس لما به

أبرز حوّاءَ القديرُ الحكيم

You appeared in Paradise when

The Almighty brought out Eve

ما زلت توحين إليها الهدى

حتى على ما جهلت لا تقيم

You keep guiding her

So she does not persist in ignorance

فوسوست حوّا إلى آدم

واقتسما تفاحةً في النعيم

Eve tempted Adam

And they shared an apple in bliss

فُتِحَت عيناهما

وبدا عرياهما في الجنان

Their eyes opened

And their nakedness appeared in the gardens

فقد الخلدَ فراحا

منه طرداً واستراحا في الزمان

They lost immortality and left it

Banished, resting in time

أنت هي الحيةُ لكنما

نفثت سُمّاً لم يكن كالسموم

You are the serpent but

Spat no venom like poisons

يدب في الجسم دبيب المنى

كخمرةٍ ليست عصير الكروم

That creeps into the body, the creeping of death

Like wine, not grape juice

لكنها سر الحياة الذي

بات غداءً للنهى والحلوم

But the secret of life

That became a meal for prohibitions and dreams

جاءنا من أبوينا

عمرنا زيناً وشينا فرضينا

From our parents came

Our lives, adorned and disgraced, we were destined

بكَ يا سرَّ القلوب

لمناجاة الغيوب كي تبينا

With you, O secret of hearts

For whispering secrets to reveal

ومرَّت الأجيالُ لا تأتلي

عدّاً وكلٌّ بك صبٌّ يهيم

And generations passed, uncounted

Each pouring in you, infatuated

لممت أشعاثهم فاغتدوا

وليس فهم بك نكسٌ لئيم

I gathered their dishevelment, so they became chaste

And they are not with you downtrodden and vile

كلٌّ تساوى فيك لكنها

ذلك لم يحلم وهذا حليم

All are equal in you, but

This one did not dream while that one is wise

وستبقين مديداً

وتوالين عديدا مقبلينا

And you will remain eternal

Continuing, many coming

عندما نبقى ترابا

بعدنا كوني ثوابا للبنينا

When we become dust

After us, reward our children

وباركيهم واذكري عهدنا

فإنه يصبح عهداً قديم

And bless them and remember our pact

For it becomes an old pact

وإنما الماضي له لذةٌ

في الذكر تحلو للأنيس النديم

The past has a pleasure

Sweet in remembrance for the intimate friend

يا آية النور تجلي لهم

فإنما العمر ظلام بهيم

O sign of light, manifest to them

For life is but ignorant darkness
