  1. وقالوا أن هذا العصر نورٌ

    فهل سلمت من اللؤم الطباعُ

    They say this is an age of light

    Has moral meanness been eradicated?

  2. أو انجابت غيوم الغش يوماً

    فلاح الصبح وابتسم الشعاع

    Or has the cloud of deceit conceived

    So dawn shone and rays smiled?

  3. وهل ساد الوفاءُ وماتَ غدرٌ

    وزال الشكُّ وانحسر القناع

    Has loyalty prevailed and treachery died?

    Has doubt departed and the mask fallen?

  4. وإلا ما الذي يدعون نوراً

    وبين عناصر الدنيا صراع

    If not, what do they call light?

    While elements of life still conflict

  5. أكفرٌ كله سَفَةٌ وعابٌ

    وإيمانٌ هو الشتم القذاع

    Infidelity, all disgrace and failing

    Faith is but vulgar insult

  6. وفلسفةٌ تقوم على جمادٍ

    أشال نشوءَه القومُ الرعاع

    Philosophy based on inanimate matter

    Which the rabble destroyed in its origins

  7. بها انقادوا لما يرضي هواهم

    كما ينقاد للريح الشراع

    They pursue what satisfies their passions

    As a sail submits to the winds

  8. تُشاد لربة الفسق المغاني

    ويَعمرُرُ في جوانبها النزاع

    Songs are composed for the goddess of vice

    Around it conflict continues to dwell

  9. ويُبذَلُ كل احرش في حماها

    أحقُّ به الأطيفال الجياع

    Every drunkard protects it

    More deserving are the starving children

  10. لقد بكت الطهارة يوم ولّى

    بنوها وانجلى عنها الوداع

    Chastity wept when its people turned away

    And bid it a regretful farewell

  11. في الحب السلامُ فما تَبَقَّت

    سوى الشهوات يضرمها التياع

    In love there is peace, so there remained

    Only desires inflamed by craving

  12. فتُقضي مثل شرب الماءِ فيهم

    ولا سيفٌ يروع ولا يراع

    Fulfilled in them like drinking water

    No sword frightens or cautions

  13. زواجهم لمالٍ أو مقامٍ

    يسوقهم إليه المستطاع

    Their marriage is for money or status

    Brought by the capable

  14. سماسرةٌ تتاجر بالغواني

    لها الإعراضُ تشرى أو تباع

    Pimps trade in singing girls

    Whose rejection is bought or sold

  15. رمينا بالبناتِ لهم متاعاً

    كأن بناتنا لهم متاع

    We cast our daughters to them as goods

    As if our daughters are their chattel

  16. عفاءً أيها الدنيا فإني

    رأيتُ الناس قد ماتوا وضاعوا

    Goodbye O world, for I have seen

    People die and lose all

  17. إذا قلتم بأن العصر نور

    يعززه ابتداع واختراع

    If you say the age is light

    Bolstered by invention and progress

  18. فباسم العصر لا تبقوا على ما

    يقال له التضامن والمشاع

    Then for fellowship and sharing

    Do not let what is called survive

  19. وباسم العلم والعلما أَضِلُّوا

    نفوساً قد تناولها الضياع

    And in the name of science and scholars

    Misguide souls taken by loss

  20. وباسم الدين والتقوى أميتوا

    ضميرَ الناس وليحي الخداع

    And in God's name and piety

    Kill people's conscience and let deceit live

  21. كلوا مال الأرامل واليتامى

    وجدّوا في تطلبُّه وداعوا

    Consume the money of widows and orphans

    And enjoy plundering it

  22. ولا تحزنكم ثكلى أرنَّت

    ولا طفلٌ نبا عنه الرضاع

    Do not grieve over a bereaved woman who laments

    Or a child deprived of suckling

  23. ولا قومٌ أمضَّهم نواح

    فمما أصغى لنوحهم سماع

    Or a people devastated by wailing

    For who would hear their lament?

  24. وقولوا إن هذا العصر نورٌ

    فقولكم هو الأمر المطاع

    And say this is an enlightened age

    For your word is obeyed

  25. لحى اللَه السكوتَ وناصحيه

    ولكن ليس في العذل اقتناع

    God keep safe the silent ones and their advisors

    But there is no convincing the excuser

  26. تمديُنهم مصائبُ صائبات

    يضيق ببعضها الصدر الوساع

    Endless disasters afflict them

    Distressing even the vast bosomed

  27. مصائبُ كلما فكرتُ فيها

    أرى رأسي ألم به صداع

    Disasters, whenever I think of them

    I feel a painful headache

  28. فيا دهري وبيعي كان خسراً

    لحاك اللَه هل مثلي يباع

    Oh my time and my sale was a loss

    God has woven, who like me can be sold?
