1. لا أكذبُ اللَه فقدتُ الرمقا

    ولاشت الأيامُ قلبي النزقا

    I do not lie, O God, I have lost my vigor

    And the days have exhausted my grieving heart

  2. وصرتُ إن ألقى المساءَ آتياً

    أخافُ لا ألقى الصباحَ مشرقا

    If I see the evening coming, I fear

    I will not see the bright morning

  3. وإن رأيتُ النجم رقَّ نورُه

    فغازلَ الدنيا به والأُفقا

    And if I see a star whose light has dimmed

    As it flirts with the world and the horizon

  4. رأيتُ في نفسي المنى غوارباً

    كالماءِ لا يُسيغه من شرقا

    I have seen in myself desires like water

    That cannot be swallowed when it is brackish

  5. يروعني البحرُ إذا أمواجهُ

    أربدَّت وطاف ظِلُّها مسترقا

    The sea frightens me when its waves

    Chill and its shadows steal quietly

  6. أراقبُ الموجَ بعيداً إنني

    لا أركبُ البحرَ فأَخشى الفرقا

    I watch the waves from afar for I

    Do not dare to ride the sea in fear of drowning

  7. من يسيرُ الغورَ ومن يعربه

    قد أعجم الهولُ العقولَ فرَقا

    Who dares to cross the abyss and traverse it

    Terror has confused the minds and scattered them

  8. يعترض الهلالُ في الجو إذا

    ما اعترضَ الليلُ الوجودَ انطلقا

    The crescent appears in the sky when

    The night intersects existence and takes off

  9. يطلع في جنح الظلام خافقاً

    كأنه قلبُ محبٍ خفقا

    It rises fluttering in the wings of darkness

    Like the heartbeat of a loving heart

  10. يُشوِّقُ النجمَ بعيداً وهو في

    مرقبه ملتهبٌ تشوُّقا

    It arouses the distant star which

    Burns with yearning in its watchtower

  11. والزهرُ قد أغضى الجفون نعساً

    والمندلُ الطيبُ منه عبقا

    The flowers have closed their eyelids in sleep

    And the fragrant sprigs scent the air

  12. والغصن قد أذهله السحرُ وفي

    مسارحِ المياه تسكبُ الرُقى

    The branches are dazed by magic and

    In the meadows of water, serenity is poured

  13. والطير أخفى رأسَه تحت جنا

    حيه ونام لا يبالي أَرقا

    The birds have tucked their heads beneath their wings

    And fallen asleep unbothered by vigilance

  14. ولاحظ النسيمُ ما في المحفل

    المعقود من أنسٍ فوافي شيفا

    The gentle breeze regards the intimate gathering

    Full of companionship, so it comes carrying

  15. يحمل في أردانه قطر الندى

    ينثره منتظما متَّسقا

    In its folds, drops of dew

    Which it scatters methodically in order

  16. والنور من فوق ومن تحت وما

    بينهما مدَّ الإله الغسقا

    The light is above, below, and between

    God has extended the darkness

  17. يا قومُ ناموا في أمانٍ أنني

    أساهرُ الأكوانَ وحدي مشفقا

    O people, sleep in safety for I

    Stay up alone caring for the universe

  18. أسأَل هل تحنو القلوبُ مرةً

    فالنور رمزٌ للحنانِ خلقا

    I ask, do hearts once

    Soften? For light is a symbol of affection created

  19. وهل بها صفح وإغضاءٌ ففي

    زهر الرياض الصفحُ بادٍ طلقا

    Is there in them pardon and turning away?

    For in the flowers of gardens, pardon blooms openly

  20. وهل بها ذكرى ففي الماءِ جرت

    ذكرى نفت عنه القذى والرنقا

    Is there in them remembrance? For in the water

    Remembrance flows, cleansed of debris and impurities

  21. وهل بها تأَلُّفٌ فالطير في

    مبيتها تُقسمُ لن تفترقا

    Is there in them harmony? For at night

    The birds vow they will never part

  22. وهل بها عهدٌ جميلٌ فالندى

    على الأزاهير صفا مؤتلقا

    Is there in them a beautiful covenant? For the dew

    Settles gently on the flowers in the morning

  23. وهل لها من العمى انتابهةٌ

    فالليلُ زال والصباح انبثقا

    Is there in them recovery from blindness?

    For the night has gone and dawn broke out

  24. قولوا لسعدي والقلوبُ أصبحت

    فوضى هو اللَه بنا قد رفقا

    Tell Saadi while hearts have fallen

    Into chaos, God has been gentle with us

  25. ما أجمل الإحسانَ بالناس وما

    أبهجه إن كان عفواً مطلقا

    How beautiful is kindness to people, and how

    Delightful when it is unconditional

  26. إن الحفاظَ في الورى وثيقةٌ

    بينهم وحافظٌ من وثقا

    Keeping promises in this world is a bond

    Between them, and the keeper of promises has tied

  27. من لي بان أراك لي ذاكرةً

    أطردُ عن نفسي الأسى والقلقا

    Who can tell me, will I see you remembering me

    I banish sorrow and anxiety from myself

  28. هل كنتُ يوماً في الهوى مقصراً

    أو كنتُ بين الناس شيئاً خَلقا

    Was I ever falling short in passion

    Or was I ever lacking in morals among people?

  29. في الحسن جاوزت المدى وفي الهوى

    قلبي جاراكِ فنال السبقا

    In beauty I exceeded all bounds, and in passion

    My heart preceded you, attaining first place

  30. أعملتُ رأيي في حياتي ناجحاً

    حتى رأَيتُ الحبَّ سرّاً مغلقا

    I have succeeded in my purpose in life

    Until I saw love as a hidden secret

  31. سرٌّ تولّاني فأًبحتُ كما

    ترين نزّاعاً لجوجاً قلقا

    A secret that has possessed me, so I have become

    As you see, defiant, troubled, and restless

  32. أُعالج الحبُّ ولا أعرف إلا

    أَن لي قلباً إلى الحب ارتقى

    I suffer from love yet know nothing

    Except that my heart has risen to love

  33. مشرَّدُ الإدراك موكولٌ إلى

    هواكِ أن يكون حراً لبقا

    My consciousness is lost, surrendered

    To your love, to be free in permanence

  34. في كل يومٍ تعتريه هزةٌ

    يكاد غذ تنتابه أن يصعقا

    Every day it is shaken by tremors

    Nearly ravaged as if about to convulse

  35. كأَنه النبتةُ في تربتها

    تكاد في الهجير أَن تحترقا

    Like a plant in its soil when

    In exile, it is nearly set aflame

  36. منتفضٌ كالطير في وكنته

    إذا الشتاءُ بالسيول أَغرقا

    Trembling like a bird in its nest

    When the winter floods drown it

  37. منقبضُ الصدرِ حزينٌ صابرٌ

    من غصصي أكاد أن أخختنقا

    With a contracted, sorrowful, patient breast

    I nearly suffocate from my agonies

  38. والناس راحوا في الزمان شيعاً

    شتى وساروا في الحياة فِرَقا

    While people in time have wandered

    In separate groups and scattered in life

  39. إلّا فؤادي فهو عنهم راغبٌ

    إليكِ عبدٌ كرهٌ أَن يعتقا

    Except for my heart which longs for you

    A willing slave who hates to be freed

  40. سعى كما يسعى الكرامُ جهدهم

    ماذا عليه إن يكن قد أخفقا

    It strives as the noble strive

    What can it do if it has failed?

  41. الحبُّ حبي فليكن لي الوفا

    والوجدُ وجدي فليكن لي الشقا

    Love is my love, so loyalty is mine

    Longing is my longing, so agony is mine

  42. والحظُّ حظي فليكن لي الهنا

    والعمر عمري فليكن لكِ البقا

    Fate is my fate, so delight is mine

    Life is my life, so eternity is yours

  43. ماذا على الفراش إذ تَيَّمه المص

    باحُ إن طاف به فاحترقا

    What can be done by one the death throes have orphaned

    If the morning deserts him and he burns?

  44. أنا الذي أُسأَلُ عن نفسي وما

    غيريَ إذ عشقتُ قالوا عشقا

    It is I who am questioned about myself, and none

    Other, for when I loved they said, he loves

  45. واللَه لا أطلب إلا أَن أرى

    منك الرضى رغم الورى بي لحقا

    By God, I seek only to attain your satisfaction

    Despite the people's accusations against me

  46. وأَن يقولَ الناسُ عنا مرةً

    هذان قد تصاحبا فأنفقا

    And that one day people may say of us

    They kept company and spent generously
