أَشواطِئَ الإٍسكَندَرِيَّةِ طيبٌ
فيكَ المصيف لعاشق ولهان
The shores of Alexandria are good
Summer is for lovers and the infatuated here
هجر البيوتَ إليك محرقة اللظى
إذ شُبَّ فيها القيظُ كالنيران
They fled the houses to you, scorched by the blaze
When the heat intensified in them like fires
وأتاكِ يحمل حبه وغرامه
متقيلاً من ظلك الفينان
And came to you carrying their love and passion
Sheltered by your cool shade
يا مربعي دون المرابع إنني
دونَ المرابع والهٌ بك عاني
O my rectangle, the best of rectangles, I
Unlike rectangles, am madly in love with you
أَنسَيتَني وَطني البعيدَ وإِنما
هو أَوَّلٌ عندي وأَنت الثاني
You made me forget my distant homeland
Although it was first, you are second to me
لكنما فيك الحبيبُ وإِنني
وطنُ الحبيب أحب من أوطاني
But my beloved is here, and I
A beloved's homeland is dearer than my own lands
كم جلسةٍ لي فيك وحدي شاكياً
كشكاية الإخوان للإخوان
How many sessions I've had alone with you, complaining
Like the complaints of friends to friends
أبكي بكاءَ الطفل حتى ينتهي
دمع به يتقرَّحُ الجفنان
I cry a child's cries until I'm done
With tears that ulcerate the eyelids
جهد الحزين عيونه الشكرى فان
نضبت فتلك نهاية الأحزان
The sorrowful tires his eyes with tears, so when
They're dry, that's the end of sorrows
والصبر أجمل ما استفاد القلبُ أن
نشط القضباءُ إليه بالحدثان
And patience is the best the heart has gained
When fate stirs it with events
لكنه ماذا يفيد ودونه
حقدُ القضاءِ وغضبة الأزمان
But what good is it when below it
Is the spite of fate and wrath of times?
البحر مبسوط الأديم كأَنه
صدرٌ أليفُ مسرةٍ وأمان
The sea's vast expanse is like
An intimate, joyful, and safe chest
والريح لينة المهبِّ لطيفة
كتنهدات الموجع المرنان
The wind's gentle gusts are delicate
Like the sighs of a soft, flexible lamenter
والشمس تضرم في السماء مجامراً
هذي الغيوم لهن مثل دخان
The sun blazes in the sky recklessly
To these clouds like smoke
بعثت إلى لجج البحار أشعةً
صيَّرنها لججاً من العقيان
It sent rays into the depths of the seas
Making them depths of snakes
اللانهاية في بعيد سمائها
واللانهاية في القريب الداني
Infinity in its distant sky
And infinity in the near horizon
بحران من جلدٍ ومن ماءٍ وفي
الأفق القصيِّ تمارج البحران
Two seas of skin and water, and in
The furthest horizon, the stirring of both seas
العين يأخذها الجلالُ كأنها
شهدت هبوطَ هدىً ووحيَ جنان
The eye is taken by splendor as though
It witnessed the descent of inspiration and paradise
يا بحر والأمواج فيك تدفَّعت
قلبي كهمِّك دائم الخفقان
O sea, the waves in you surge
My heart pounds like your worry
وأَساك مثل أَساي لجَّ وإنما
صدري وصدرك بالأسى رحبان
And your foundation is like mine, turbulent
My chest and yours are both vast with sorrow
هذي شواطئك الطويلة أنها
مسرى الغرام ومسرح الغزلان
These long shores of yours
Are the walkway of love and stage of gazelles
نصبوا بها خيم المصيف صفوفها
متسلسلات مثل عقد جمان
They erected summer pavilions in rows
Lined up like a necklace's beads
نزعت بإحداها سعادُ ثيابها
فرأَت تجلّي حسنها العينان
One of them doffed her clothes in happiness
And her eyes saw the manifestation of her beauty
وأتتكَ عاريةَ الأهاب وإنما
لبست بياض جمالها الفتان
She came to you naked, wearing nothing
But the whiteness of her mesmerizing beauty
ورمت إليك بنفسها وتلاعبت
في الماءِ بين الصحب والخلان
She threw herself into you and frolicked
In the water among friends and flirts
ما آن ثَمَّ ملاحةً وملوحةً
جُمِعا ولم يتمازج الما آن
Never has saltiness and sweetness
Been joined without mixing, as it did then
أنتَ السماء قريبة قد أطلعت
نجم الوجوه على مياهك راني
You're the close sky which unveiled
The star of faces upon your flowing waters
أنتَ الرياض جنيَّة قد أبدعت
زهراً مغيراً زهر كل جنان
You're the garden which created
A wondrous flower, the blossom of every garden
هذي طيورك أنها ثرثارة
ضحكاً ولعباً فيك باطمئنان
These are your birds, chattering
With laughter and play in your reassurance
الواقفات جسومهنَّ هياكل
صحت بهنَّ عبادة الأوثان
Those standing, their bodies idols
Which the worship of idols revived
والماشيات بطيئة مياسة
أعطافهنَّ نواعم الأبدان
Those walking slowly and gently
Their limbs soft bodies
والجالسات على الصخور زواهراً
مثل الرياض قطوفهنَّ دواني
Those sitting atop the rocks like flowers
In gardens, their buds bent over
شجر الحياة على الرمال ثمارهن
نَ أطايب التفاح والرمان
The tree of life on the sands, their fruits
The finest apples and pomegranates
والسابحات رشيقة حركاتهن
نَ بديعة التصريف والإتقان
Those swimming slender in their motions
Exquisitely composed and proficient
أنت الغنيُّ وقد حويت جواهراً
فاقت كنوز الدر والمرجان
You're wealthy, containing treasures
Beyond pearls and coral's riches
هذي عرائسك الجميلة أنها
مشمولة بالحسن والإحسان
These are your beautiful brides
Endowed with beauty and favor
متلاعبات في مياهك مثلما
لعبت حميّا الكاس بالسكران
Frolicking in your waters as
Humayya played with the wine-filled cup
يخرجن منك مكللاتٍ لؤلؤاً
كالزهر غبَّ العارض الهتان
They emerge from you adorned with pearls
Like flowers, their cheeks infused with splendor
لكنهنَّ عواطل من كل ما
زان الجمال لأنهنَّ غواني
But they are flirts, done with
All that beautifies, for they are wanton
وتضيء فيك سعاد شمساً برجها
قلبي وقلبك أننا إخوان
In you, Saada shines like a sun whose orb
Is my heart, and yours - we are brothers
الشعر فيضُ أشعةٍ ذهبيةٍ
والجسم فيض النور واللمعان
Poetry pouring golden rays
And the body pouring light and glitter
نزلت ذكاء إلى المغيب فواجهت
سعدى وقد يتواجه القمران
My happiness set into the sunset and faced
My Saadi, as moons face each other
فإذا هما يتناظران وهذه
شمس المساءِ تميل ف الميزان
There they gaze at one another while
The evening sun tilts in the balance
ذابت حياءً فاختفت من بعدها
أرخت ستار الأفق أحمر قاني
She melted in shyness and disappeared, after which
The horizon released its red curtain
ومضت سعاد كأنها مَلَكٌ مشى
في الخلد بين الحور والولدان
Saada walked as if an angel moving
Among the Houris and youths in eternity
يا مُنتيَتي ومَنِيَّتي ما ضرَّ لو
سرنا كما يتساير الإِلفان
My wish and my desire - what harm if
We walked like two companions?
متشابكَين أناملاً بأنامل
متهاديين كأننا ملكان
With interlocked fingers, like kings
Gazing at each other, exchanging passions in our eyes
متساقيين غرامنا بلحاظنا
متخاصرين كأننا غصنان
Sipping our love in our looks
Embracing like branches
متناسيين العالمين وما بها
والعالمون أحق بالنسيان
Forgetting both worlds and what's in them
And people most deserving of forgetfulness
يا بحر قد جاءَ المساءُ مجرراً
أذياله ينبثُّ في الأكوان
O sea, evening has come dragging
Its train spreading through the cosmos
والناس يمشون الهوينا مثلما
يتريَّثُ المتفرج المتواني
People stroll heedlessly like
A slow spectator loitering
شيب وشبان وولد كلهم
متباين الأزياء والألوان
Old, young, children - all
Of different clothes and colors
والبشر ترسمه الحياة سعادةً
في أوجه الفتيات والفتيان
Life sketches humans' happiness
In the faces of maidens and lads
ويهزم مرحُ الشبيبة مثلما
هز النسيم نواعم الأغصان
The cheer of youth defeats
Like a breeze shaking branches
يتنافر الصبيان بينهمُ كما
تتنافر الأطيار في الأفنان
Boys skirmish as
Birds in the nests skirmish
وُلدٌ كنثر الدر ملء قلوبهم
أَمنُ السعيد وخفَّةُ الجذلان
A child like scattered pearls, filling hearts,
The safety of the happy and agility of fawns
لا رغبة لهم ولا أمنيةٌ
أن الشقاءَ رغائب وأماني
They have no desires or wishes
For misery itself is desires and wishes
لا هون عما في الحياة وإنما
في اللهوى كل سعادة الصبيان
Unconcerned with life's woes, for
In play is all the joy of boys
حتى إذا ما النجم أشرق باسماً
في الأفق ينظر نظرة الحيران
Until the star shines by name
In the horizon, looking confused
قفل الجميع إلى منازلهم ومن
بعد اللقاءِ رموك بالهجران
All head to their homes, and after
Meeting, bid you farewell
يا بحر إن العمر همٌّ دائم
بتعارف وتباعد وتداني
O sea, life itself is constant worry
Of bonding, parting, and drawing near
أنت الزمان وكل عمرٍ قطرةٌ
هيهات تنقع غلَّةَ الظمآن
You're time, and each life a drop
Alas, seeping the thirsty one's throat
والنفس مثل شواطئ ممتدةٍ
روّادُهن عواطف الإنسان
The soul like stretched shores
Whose visitors are human passions
والقلب لجتك السحيقة أنها
مرسى القرار ومنبع الطغيان
And the heart your deep turbulence, it's
The harbor of stillness and source of tyranny
أما الحياة وأنت رمز وجودها
فلها إليك جواذب ومعاني
As for life, and you its symbol
It is attracted and gives meaning to you
يا بحر زد وانقص فإنك مثلها
فانٍ ومثلك كل شيءٍ فاني
O sea, ebb and flow, for you're like it
Ephemeral, and like you all things ephemeral
