1. يعاتبها فيه الفؤادُ مفندا

    فتغريه حتى ينثني متوددا

    He reproaches her, and his heart complains,

    So she teases him until he bows submissively.

  2. وتُسمِعُه من سورة الوجد آيةً

    يعود بها أدمى وأضنى وأوجدا

    She recites to him a verse from the chapter of passion,

    With which he returns, blinded, needy, and fervent.

  3. إلا أن ثوراتِ الفؤاد قواتلٌ

    إذا لم تصب من خالص العقل مسعدا

    But the passions of the heart are lethal,

    Unless instilled with pure reason to guide them.

  4. ولكنه فات الزمان وأُطفئت

    مناراته فازورَّ واشتط مبعدا

    Yet time has passed and its beacons are extinguished;

    So he wandered, exasperated, and became estranged.

  5. وفي كل يوم غفوة وانتباهةٌ

    لناحلةٍ وجداً وفاقدةٍ هدى

    Each day a moment of heedlessness and vigilance

    For a bee, fervor, and one who has lost her way;

  6. على ذلك القلب الذي أضمر الأسى

    إلى ذلك الوجد الذي حجب المدى

    Upon that heart which harbored sorrow,

    And that fervor which obscured the horizon.

  7. أحبته ملءَ الصدر في مرح الصبا

    جميل المحيا فاتر اللحظ أصيدا

    She loved him with all her heart in the garden of youth;

    Beautiful, with a languid glance, and a hunter.

  8. ولم تستشر فيه النهى أن حكمها

    يعيد لها وجه المحبة أسودا

    She did not consult abstention, for her rule

    Would restore to her the face of love, gloomy.

  9. فتى مثل ريحان الجنان نضارةً

    يطالعها بدراً ويخطر أملدا

    A youth like the fresh basil of heaven

    Who rises before her like a full moon.

  10. وتبرق عيناه ذكاءً كأنما

    محبتها مَرَّت بعينيه أثمدا

    His eyes sparkle with intelligence as if

    Her love had passed through them as a blaze.

  11. لقد نزلت من قلبه في مكانةٍ

    ينم عليها خدُّه متوردا

    She descended from his heart to a position

    Where her cheek slumbers flushed upon it.

  12. ودلَّ على حبٍ عظيم مثوله

    لديها حييّاً واهياً متجلدا

    And he showed a great love in standing

    Before her, alive and infirm, enduring.

  13. إذا لحظتها مقلتاه تنهدت

    وإن لحظته مقلتاها تنهدا

    When her glances fell on him, they sighed,

    And when his glances fell on her, they sighed.

  14. تحب الغاواني في الفتى شيمة الحيا

    ويعرضنَ عن مستوقح قد تمردا

    She loves refinement in a youth - an attribute of life,

    And she turns from an impudent one, rebellious.

  15. سليم وسلمى أسماهما سرُّ رامزِ

    بقلبين في روح الهوى قد توحدا

    Sulaym and Sulayman - a secret symbol

    Named two hearts united in the spirit of love.

  16. تعشقها بنت السراة ولم يكن

    يضارعها عزاً وجاهاً ومحتدا

    The daughter of the caravan leader loved him

    And he did not contend with her in glory, rank or zeal.

  17. وليس له في العمر إلّا شبابهُ

    وعقلٌ يراه في الأمور مسددا

    He has nothing in life but his youth,

    A mind he sees steering matters straight.

  18. وسلمى فتاةً تشبه الشمس طلعةً

    لها وجنة كالورد كلَّله الندى

    And Sulayma is a girl who resembles the rising sun;

    For her a cheek like a rose garlanded by dew.

  19. وعينان إنساناهما قد تلألآ

    كنجمي سماءٍ يبرقان زمردا

    And two eyes whose glance sparkles

    Like two stars in a sky flashing emerald.

  20. وجيدٌ كأن الفجر شق عموده

    وحلّاه بالنجم المضيء وقلَّدا

    And a neck as if dawn split its column

    And adorned it with the bright star and necklaces.

  21. وشَعرٌ كعَقدِ التاج زيَّن رأسها

    فإن أسبلته انساب تبراً مجعدا

    And hair like the strands of a crown, decorating her head,

    So if she lets it down it flows like silk, curled.

  22. وقدٌّ كغصن الزنبق الغصن ناعمٌ

    إذا راوحته الناسماتُ تأوَّدا

    And a figure like a delicate basil branch -

    If the breeze stirs it, it inclines gently.

  23. وتمشي كأَن الأرض ليست تَمَسُّها

    لها قدما ظبيٍ تُقلان أميدا

    She walks as if the ground never touches her feet -

    She has the steps of a gazelle, graceful.

  24. وتضحك ضحكات الطهارة مثلما

    تجاوبَ طيرٌ في الأراك وغردا

    She laughs with the laughter of purity, as

    Birds converse in thickets and chirp.

  25. وتبسم عن درٍ نظيمٍ مطلةً

    بوجهٍ لها يزهو لجيناً وعسجدا

    And she smiles with a string of handsome pearls

    With a face it adorns, radiant and dimpled.

  26. فيعشقها في صبحه ومسائه

    وفي أمسه الماضي ويعشقها غدا

    So he loves her in his morn and eve,

    And in his past yesterday - and loves her tomorrow.

  27. ويعبدها في الخُلق والخلق ربةً

    له وفخارٌ أَن تجلَّ وتعبدا

    He worships her in manners and she is his idol

    Whom he aspires to please and worship.

  28. يكدُّ ليرضيها بإعلاءِ شأنه

    إذا نال في الدنيا علاءً وسؤددا

    He strives to please her by elevating his status

    If he attains eminence and leadership in the world.

  29. إن انحط عنها في الحياة فإنها

    أقامت له مِراقة حبٍّ ليصعدا

    If he falls short of her in life, she

    Establishes for him a bond of love by which to ascend.

  30. وقد وعدته أن يكون حليلَها

    ولم تك ممن ليس يصدق موعدا

    She promised him he would be her husband

    And she was not one whose promise goes unkept.

  31. لها والدٌ لم ينضج العلمُ رأسه

    فما أنفك في الطبع القديم مقيدا

    She has a father whose mind is not matured

    So he never changed from his old nature, constrained.

  32. يرى سطوة الآباء حقاً مؤيدا

    تبيح على الأبناء حقاً مؤيدا

    He sees the tyranny of forefathers as truth, supported -

    Sanctioning power over children as a right, upheld.

  33. ولا يفهم الدنيا الحديثة إذ يرى

    تمديُن أهل العصر للخلق مفسدا

    He does not understand the modern world, for he sees

    Its people's morals corrupted and depraved.

  34. وهل يبصر النور امرءٌ حين تنجلي

    أشعته إن كان أحسر أرمدا

    Can one who is blind see the light when its rays shine?

    He saw only darkness where light appeared.

  35. يرى وهجاً في طيه كدرة بدت

    ويجهل أن هذا بعينيه قد بدا

    He is ignorant that this blindness is in his own eyes,

    And that the new exceeds the old in perfection, henceforth.

  36. ولا ئك في نقص الجديد وإنما

    يفوق كمالاً للقديم غدا سدى

    Many like her father tightly constrain

    Progress, though ideas multiply and abound.

  37. وأن أبا سلمى كثيرٌ مثاله

    يضيقون حصراً في الورى وتعددا

    Some customs fade while others arise,

    As some prosper while others decline.

  38. وجاءَت أَباها مرةً وشكت له

    غرام سليم وهو إن طال أَقصدا

    The worth of this life is a day and a night,

    And happiness lies only in what smiles with fortune.

  39. وقالت له ما ضر لو زوَّجت به

    وما كان إلا كامل الخلق أيِّدا

    Light is only what the eye sees pure,

    And night only what the eye sees obscured.

  40. فإن يكُ عنهم قد تداني مقامُه

    فمن يتزوج سيداً كان سيدا

    Some people did not fear inflicting misery

    On others, bound by an old belief, embedded.

  41. ولكن أبوها كان صلباً طبعه

    وكان عريها قاسي القلب أصلدا

    Yes, marry her to an ignorant man, but one

    Whose blessed wealth flowed as did his birth.

  42. فقام إليها مجفلاً صلباً طباعه

    وكان عليها قاسي القلب أصلدا

    A lout in life's dealings, reckless in character,

    Wearing the garb of dishonor, debauched.

  43. وكذَّب فيها سمعه وعيانهُ

    وراجعها فيما تقول مؤكدا

    He spends most days in taverns

    At gambling tables, decadent and profligate.

  44. فما زاده إلّا اقتناعاص حديثُها

    فهاج غضوباً شاتماً متهددا

    He loses health amid cups and dice,

    And wealth to gambling, squandered.

  45. وأوسعها سبّاً وخّلى نهارها

    ظلاماً بما أرغى عليها وأزبدا

    If Sulayma sincerely advised him, he spurned her

    Harshly, forbidding, defiant.

  46. أتعشق بنتُ الشؤم ثم تجيئه

    ليسفعهافيمن تحب وينجدا

    He relates the follies of every alley,

    And recites the immoralities of dens, chanting.

  47. ولا تستحي فيما تقول ومن له

    مكان سليم إن يزوجها الردى

    His speech is vulgar, so if she complained,

    The least he would do is rebuke her, threatening.

  48. كذاك ضعيف الشأن خامل سمعة

    تسربل أثواب المهانة وارتدى

    If she wanted something, he opposed her

    Stubbornly, exceeding in vengeance and transgression.

  49. أَيجرأ أن يهوى فتاةً كبنته

    ويخطب قلباً منه أسمى وأبعدا

    He resents returning home for even an hour -

    So he leaves angry and returns enraged.

  50. ألا لا وبأس العمر إن تقدمَ ابنةٌ

    على أمرها كيما تضل وتفقدا

    When she suffered unbearable torment,

    Death eased some of the deposited humiliation.

  51. وأَقسم أَن لا تبرح البيت ناصحاً

    بأَن تستشير الراشدات لترشدا

    An hour of torture equals her wealth,

    Making her forget status, honor, and glory.

  52. هنيئاً لأهل الفقر شدة فقرهم

    فرب ثراءٍ كان فقراً مشددا

    Sulayma concealed her torment and passion

    For the one they distanced, captive and fettered.

  53. وإن الغنى حرية القلب في الورى

    وما زاد عنها فالحكاية والصدا

    An infatuation nestled in the heart's branches

    Flaring up when remembered like kindling ignited.

  54. وراحةُ المرءِ أكبر نعمةٍ

    بها كان عيش المرء أخضر أرغدا

    She was cast away from roses like a gazelle escaped,

    Eluding the hunters but pierced by two arrows.

  55. وما ضر تزويج الوضيع بغادةٍ

    أجل مقاماً منه إن كان أغيدا

    The arrows course through her 'til she dies;

    So it was when Sulayma's plight grew worse,

  56. على أنها الأحساب أكثر ما تُرى

    لَتُذعر أَن يدنى إليها وتنقدا

    And she despaired to the point of death, in bonds,

    Where is Sulayman after being cut off from her?

  57. تريك الذي لا يملك المرء وجهه

    لديه وأنكى لو تريك وأنكدا

    He left, his heart burning with the wound of love

    Ever since it bled, spread, and was bandaged.

  58. يقلد بعضُ الناس بعضَهم وهل

    يعيش الذي يقضي الحياة مقلدا

    But it is an alien wound, and one who suffers it

    Sees the alien wound heal and be dressed.

  59. وأكثر ما يأنيه عادات سابقٍ

    له وهو آت بعده قد تعودا

    Tell her the separation made him suffer destruction,

    And that he bears torment and distress.

  60. إلا أنها العادات الكبير كبيرةً

    إذا لم يجل في حومة العمر مجهدا

    He did not die, but each hour despair kills him,

    And endurance revives him, tried and firm.

  61. فتنسخ عادات وتنشأ غيرها

    فإن راج بعض أصبح البعض مُكسدا

    He conceals his anguished heart to comfort his passion,

    Toiling at work, exhausted and spent.

  62. وقيمةُ هذا العمر يوم وليلة

    وما السعد إلا في الذي لاح مسعدا

    It is vain to seek solace if one burns in love -

    A fire not quenched but raging instead.

  63. وما النور إلا ما ترى العين صافياً

    وما الليل إلا ما ترى العين أربدا

    If after losing hope in her he lives, it is for

    A mystery that created and settled all beings.

  64. ولم يخش بعض الناس إشقاءَ بعضهم

    لوهمٍ قديم في النفوس توطدا

    Do your friends know, Sulayma, that you

    Are wed to misery, cradling sorrow?

  65. نعم زوجوها جاهلاً غير أنه

    له ثروة طابت كما طاب مولدا

    The malady pierces the throbbing heart,

    Expanding it with despair, illness and fatigue.

  66. أخا بدواتٍ في الحياة مرافقاً

    ثلاثاً ملاحاً في الفواجر خردا

    You count the remaining nights in agony

    And weep for the departed nights, fervent.

  67. فيصرف في الحانات معظم وقته

    على منضدات اللعب جنحاً ومغتدى

    You grieve for a youth that was light, now extinguished,

    And lament a heart that was embers, now quenched.

  68. ويغرم بين الكاس والطاس صحةً

    ويغرم مالاً في القمار مبددا

    You reckon what has passed of the days with him

    And return, remembering, to examine it.

  69. فإن أخلصت سلمى له النصح ردها

    ثقيلاً عليها ناهياً متمردا

    Except you protected your feelings as

    Saplings are protected, nurtured.

  70. يقصُّ سفاهات الأزقة كلها

    ويروي فظاعات المقاصف منشدا

    How often did the memory of Sulayman disturb her heart,

    Keeping the long night awake, sleepless!

  71. ويغلظ في عرضِ الحديث فإن شكت

    فأهون أمرٍ زجرها متوعدا

    When she lay down to rest, she saw a specter

    Beside her, keeping her company in slumber.

  72. وإن رغبت أمراً لها رام ضده

    حروناً وغالى في النكاية واعتدى

    If she got up to walk, his figure appeared

    Before her eyes, materialized, embodied.

  73. ويضجر أَن يأوي إلى البيت ساعةً

    فيخرج غضباناً ويأتي معربدا

    She sees him sometimes miserable, disappointing,

    Other times, delighted, charming, fortunate.

  74. فلا قت عذاباً هوَّن الموتَ بعضه

    بما وردت من شرعة الذل موردا

    His phantoms disquiet her as she frequents

    Places, wandering to and fro, appeased.

  75. وساعةُ تعذيبٍ تساوى ثراءَها

    وتنسي جميع الجاه والعز والجدى

    A latent illness overwhelms her, and it

    Baffles the healers, accustomed and stubborn.

  76. وتكتم سلمى بؤسها وغرامها

    بمن أبعدوا عنها أسيراً مصفدا

    Until it grew, slowly and heavily,

    Vanquishing her fading powers, extinguished.

  77. هوىً في شغاف القلب عاصٍ كأَنه

    إذا لجَّت الذكرى لهيبٌ توقدا

    She died, and the pangs of sorrow in her heart;

    Her eyes on the horizon, awaiting the departed.

  78. كما رُميت دون الورود غزالةٌ

    وقد أفلتت لم تُظفِر المتصيدا

    They reported her death to Sulayman, so he recoiled

    Like a palace shaken by gusts, demolished.

  79. وفازت بقتّالين سهمٍ وغلةٍ

    يمضّانها حتى تموت فيهمدا

    Grief froze his tears, though it is worst

    When tears freeze and do not flow.

  80. كذلك سلمى إذ تفاقم خطبها

    عليها وشهّى أن تموت وتلحدا

    His heart battered him, disjointed,

    And his mind assailed him, deranged.

  81. وأين سليم أنه بعد قطعه

    أسيفاً مضى لا يعرف اليوم والغدا

    His soul revolted, seeking vengeance

    As a brave warrior stirs, enraged.

  82. مضى حاملاً في القلب جرح غرامه

    لدن سال واستشرى به وتفصدا

    He came to her father, carrying sharpened

    Steel, lethal and unsheathed.

  83. على أنه جرح دخيل ومن له

    بان يأسُوَ الجرح الدخيل ويضمدا

    And said: O withered flower of youth!

    O transformer of youth's water to stagnant!

  84. ألا أبلغوها في القطيعة أنه

    أصاب عذاباً مفنياً وتكبدا

    Return Sulayma to me - where is Sulayma? Should I not

    Have ransomed her with souls? I would have been ransomed!

  85. وما مات إلا أنه كل ساعة

    يموت بها يأساً ويحيى تجلدا

    The sparks of death flashed in his looks,

    So he grabbed and restrained him forcefully.

  86. ويطوي على العلّات ضيق صدره

    ليسلو الهوى في الشغل كدحاً ومكتدى

    He retreated, afraid and remorseful,

    Horrified as if bitten by an adder.

  87. وهيهات سلوان لولهان عاشق

    أخي حرق في الحب لن يتبردا

    But he disgraced his heart, cowardly,

    By assaulting a hunchbacked elderly man.

  88. إذا عاش بعد اليأس منها فإنه

    لِسِرٍّ أقام الكائنات وأقعدا

    Will you kill out of grief that has collapsed your pillar?

    Angering Sulayma in the dust, deliberately?

  89. أتعرف سلمى الصاحباتُ فإنها

    ضجيعة مهد للشقاءِ تمهدا

    You would doom the one who was the source of her life -

    The one whose mind for her would have been ransom!

  90. تخرم داء القلب خافقَ قلبها

    فأوسعه يأساً وسقماً وأجهدا

    He harmed her unintentionally, not by design,

    Nor is one who did not intend blamed.

  91. تعد الليالي الباقيات تفجعاً

    وتبكي الليالي الماضيات توجدا

    No - the wealth of hatred did not die,

    And for Sulayman it is enough to revolt and hate.

  92. وترثي شباباً كان نوراً وقد خبا

    وتندب قلباً كان جمراً فأُخمدا

    Horror had silenced his tongue,

    Altering the rest of his mind, distraught.

  93. وتحسب ما قد مرَّ من عهد حبها

    وترجع بالذكرى إليه تفقُّدا

    So he plunged the blade through his ribs,

    Burying the steel in the bone, sheathed.

  94. إلا أنها صانت عواطفها كما

    تُصان الغراسُ النامياتُ تعهدا

    He tilted, dying like a minaret fallen,

    Or a trunk, slain, stretched on the ground.

  95. وكم أقلقت ذكرى سليمٍ فؤادها

    فأحيت له الليل الطويل تسهدا

    But those true to their covenant came to receive him;

    Loyal without promise, they came without summoned.

  96. إن أضطجعت من دائها مستريحة

    رأت شبحاً بالقرب منها توسدا

    They slept in the safety of God, in the shade of a paradise

    Established for the souls of lovers, eternal.

  97. وإن نهضت تمشي تمثَّل شخصهُ

    لدى ناظريها واقفاً متجسدا

    They rested, gratified, with moral excellence,

    And lived in bliss, undying.

  98. فتبصره طوراً شقياً مخيَّباً

    وطوراً قرير العين جذلان مسعدا

    Awakened in God's mercy, remember

    The lovers who remained asleep in calamities.

  99. فتزعجها أشباحُه وهي حوَّمٌ

    تروح وتغدو في اىلأماكن روَّدا

  100. ويصرعها الداءُ الدفين وأنه

    أحار أساةً في العلاج وعُوَّدا

  101. إلى أن تمادى عادياً متثاقلاً

    وحلَّ قواها الفانيات وأهمدا

  102. فماتت وغصّاتُ الأسى في فؤادها

    ومقلتها في الأفق ترقب فرقدا

  103. نعوها إليها فاستقرَّ ملجلجاً

    كما هزت الأنواءُ صرحاً مشيدا

  104. ولم يبك لكن أجمد اليأسُ دمعه

    وشَرُّ دموع العين ما قد تجمدا

  105. فضجَّ عليه قلبه متقطعا

    ولجَّ عليه عقله متشرد

  106. وثارت عليه الروح تطلب ثارها

    كما هز قرمٌ في الجلاد مهندا

  107. فبات بحمّى صدَّع الرأسَ جمرُها

    كما أبرق الغيم الجهام وأرعدا

  108. ووافى أباها غادياً وهو حامل

    حديداً طليق الشفرتين محددا

  109. وقال له يا مذبلاً زَهَر الصبا

    ويا جاعلاً ماءَ الشبيبة أركدا

  110. أعد لي سلمى أين سلمى إلم تكن

    تُفَدّى بأرواح لكنت لها الفدى

  111. وطار شرارُ الموت في لحظاته

    فأمسكه من راهشيه مشددا

  112. وأشفق مذعور النهى متراجعاً

    مهولاً كما لَو حَيَّةٌ لسعت يدا

  113. إلا أنه نذل الفؤاد جبانه

    بإيذاءِ شيخ أحدب الظهر أدردا

  114. أيقتل هِمّاً قد تداعى عموده

    ويغضب سلمى في التراب تعمدا

  115. ويردي بها من كان أصل حياتها

    ومن ان لو تودى بمهجته ودى

  116. أتاها الأذى منه ولم يكُ قاصداً

    ولا ثأر ممن لم يكن متقصدا

  117. نعم لا ولكن ثروة الحقد لم تمت

    وحسب سليم إن يثور ويحقدا

  118. لقد أعجم الهول الفيظع لسانه

    مغيراً بباقي عقله متنجدا

  119. فلزَّ إلى أضلاعه النصل خارقاً

    وغيَّب في العظم الحديد وأغمدا

  120. ومال صريعاً كالمنارة إذ هوت

    وكالجذع ملقياً طريحاً ممددا

  121. إلا استقبليه صادق العهد وافياً

    أميناً بلا وعد أتاك ولا نِدا

  122. وناما بأمن اللَه في ظل جنة

    أُقيمت لأرواح المحبين سرمدا

  123. وقرّا بها عيناً وطيبا سريرةٍ

    وعيشاً بها عيش الهناء مخلدا

  124. تنبَّهتما في رحمة اللَه فاذكرا

    محبين ظلّوا في المصائب رقدا
