    The four seasons have passed since we left

  2. وهُدَّت خيامُ المصيف فلا

    ظلالَ بأكنافها يطمع

    The summer tents were folded, so no more

    Shadows in their corners one hopes for

  3. وقد طرد الناسَ عنك الخريفُ

    فأَوحشكَ المؤنسُ المقلع

    Autumn has driven people away from you

    So the companion bids farewell in sorrow

  4. وأغضبِ بحرَكَ هجرانُنا

    فجاش به الموجُ يستدفع

    Our departure angered your sea

    So waves surged in agitation

  5. ورُوِّعَ حصنُك وهو الأشم

    يحاذره البطلُ الأروع

    Your fortress, the mighty, was frightened

    So the bravest hero was wary

  6. ولم يخفق العلمُ المستطيلُ

    عليك وحراسُه هجع

    No longer did the tall flag flutter

    Over you, though guards kept vigil

  7. وقد صرتَ يأوي إلى شجراتك

    وحشُ فلاةٍ بها يظلع

    You became home to beasts of wilderness

    Seeking shade in your trees at night

  8. فجرَّت على وجهك الرامساتُ

    ذيولاً هي الكفنُ المفجع

    Palm leaves drape your face like shrouds

    Cloaks of grief spread in mourning

  9. ليالي أبو قير أين الليالي

    وأين النجومُ التي تلمع

    Abu Qir nights, where are the nights?

    Where are the stars that shone bright?

  10. وأين الهلالُ وكان مساءً

    مُكَوِّنُ بهجته المبدع

    Where is the crescent that once formed

    The charming night’s elated delight?

  11. وتسرح فوق الرمالِ الظباءُ

    على شاطئ البحر تستتبع

    Gazelles frolicked on the beach sands

    Pursued by does with strong forelegs

  12. عيونٌ تغازلها أعين

    قدودٌ تطوقها أذرُع

    Eyes flirting with eyes, slender branches

    Embracing sturdy trunks at their edge

  13. نواعمُ كالأغصن الناعماتِ

    فوائحُ كالعطر يَضَّوَّع

    Rising suns the young ladies resemble

    With stars trailing as followers

  14. طوالعُ بع العشي شموساً

    ترافقُها النجُم التبع

    Wavy hair above mounts at nightfall

    When darkness overwhelms and confounds

  15. نواشرُ فوق المتونِ ليالي

    الشعورِ وهنَّ الدجى الرُوَّع

    Maidens sitting atop rocks like branches

    Whose blossoms the boulders adorn

  16. جوالسُ فوق الصخور غصوناً

    على الصخر نضرتُها تمرع

    Unveilers, exposing what’s within homes

    With smiles like pearls arranged and aligned

  17. سوافرُ عن فاضحات البدور

    ضواحكُ عن درر تسطع

    Enchantresses, even tempered, wise

    Passionate lovers, ardently inclined

  18. سواحرُ لبٍ سواءٌ أخو

    الهداية والعاشقُ المولع

    Captivating with beauty galore

    Immortalized, legends designed

  19. سواهٍ لواهٍ بملكِ الجمالِ

    لهن الخلودُ وما يتبع

    Nights I spent reclining on sand

    While my eyes refused to close

  20. وليل به بتُّ مستلقياً

    على الرمل والجفنُ لا يهجع

    Stars wandered above confused, as tears Do

    In swollen eyes with sadness imposed

  21. تحيَّرُ فيه النجومُ كما

    تَتَحيَّرُ في المقل الأدمع

    The evening breeze strokes my face

    As huts gaze on me, humble posed

  22. يداعبُ وجهي نسيمُ المساءِ

    وترمقني الخيم الخشع

    Lamps hanging on their doors glow bright

    With intense light strongly disclosed

  23. بما علٌّقوا من سراجٍ منيرٍ

    على بابها نورُه اسفع

    The mighty fortress stands guard so well

    Relieving my fearful, faint heart

  24. وقد وقَفَ الحصن طوداً منيعاً

    يؤَمِّنُ منن قلبُهُ يهلع

    Silence prevailed, as if the ruins

    Were holding their breath, firmly frozen

  25. وساد السكوتُ كأَن البرايا

    مظنّاتُ أنفاسها تنزع

    The rock narrated all it had seen

    The water made my ears its host

  26. فحدَّثني الصخرُ عما رأى

    واسمعني الماءُ ما يسمع

    Events the times had independently judged

    Inscribed on the sea as time elapsed

  27. حوادثَ ملءَ الزمان استقلَّت

    على البحر أحرفُها تطبع

    Scripted in blood, lineages etched

    Which no compliant onlooker accepts

  28. مسطرةً بالدماءِ خطوطاً

    عصيٌّ بها الناظر الطيَّع

    Eyes recite them in the darkness

    And hearts memorize every debt

  29. فتقراها في الظلام عيونُ

    الفؤادِ وتضمَنُها الأضلع

    Armies, envied by anchored ships

    Sailed by the winds from every edge

  30. أساطيل تحسدها الراسخاتُ

    تسير الرياحُ بها الأربع

    Frightening the seas if they sailed

    For even whales were scared and upset

  31. تَروع البحارَ إذا ما جرت

    ففي قلبها الحوتُ مستفزع

    Transporting death battalions, aroused and alert

    While Egypt readied its spear and its wedge

  32. تُقِلُّ جيوش المنايا استثارت

    ومصرُ لنَسرِهم موقع

    Scattering the Mamluks till their unity was torn

    Unlike he who gathers and does not forget

  33. رمى بالمماليك حتى تشتت

    شملُهم فهو لا يجمع

    Envoys from every land came to him successively

    Submitting to his rule, total and absolute

  34. وجاءَته كلُّ وفودِ البلاد

    تباعاً لإِمرته تخضع

    But the great men saw with their own troops

    Determined stubbornness, refusing to let

  35. ولكن كبارُ الرجال يرون

    بأتباعهم صمماً أن دعوا

    The sea leader defied the elder’s command

    He cared not for the foe nor fret

  36. كذلك خالف أمرَ الكبيرِ

    أميرُ المياه فما يسمع

    O day the British suddenly attacked

    With sails unfurled above his head

  37. وألقى مراسيه فيكَ لا

    يبالي العدوَّ ولا يفزع

    Bullets thundered in your horizon

    And cannons roared in your waters, upset

  38. فيا يومَ فاجأه الإنكليزُ

    على رأسه حُوَّمٌ شُرَّع

    Smoke enveloped your coasts

    As if elephants, enraged, trumpet

  39. فدمدمَ في أفقيكَ الرصاصُ

    وارعد في بحرك المدفعُ

    Terrifying your seas if they sailed

    For even whales were scared and upset

  40. وطبَّقَ في جانبيك الدخانُ

    كأَنَّ الجهاتِ لُهى جُوَّع

    Feeding the thousands to the waves’ greed

    Yet the endless thirst was still unmet

  41. فروّى بحارَك قاني النجيعِ

    وإن العُطاشَ لها أنجع

    A coward delayed coming to their aid

    Fear caused his guts to churn and twist

  42. وأطعمها من تجاليدهم

    لحومَ الألوف وما تشبع

    So destruction befell them, as mountains collapse

    And massive boulders split

  43. وأَخَّرَ نجدتهم جاهلٌ

    من الخوف مهجتُه تخلع

    Avenging you was consolation for their souls

    For death cannot be satiated nor lulled, nor pacified

  44. فحلق الدمارُ بهم وكذلك

    تهوي الجبالُ وتصَدَّع

    The Turks came after years to restore the land

    And take it back from the grasp of its thief

  45. شفى نفسهم أَنهم أَدركوا

    بك الثأرَ والموتُ لا يقنع

    Bonaparte met them with troops as numerous as the sands

    With blazing fires lit in his heart unleashed

  46. أتى التركُ من بعد حولٍ لكي

    يردّوا البلاد ويستنزعوا

    He threw them an iron surge to finish them off

    Against whom no defense could be unleashed

  47. عديدَ الرمالِ أتاهم بونابارتُ

    والنارُ في قلبه تلذع

    Ask Mustafa about their heroism

    When he came pleading for mercy, a refugee

  48. رماهم بموج الحديدِ قضاءً

    عليهم وعنهم لا يدفع

    Mustafa threw his axe at the brave Moor

    Who was not one to panic or flee

  49. فسل عن بسالتهم مصطفى

    وقد جاءَ موراً به يشفع

    Severing his fingers with the sword, the Moor

    Returned to take his vengeance, enraged and seething

  50. رمى بطبنجته مصطفى

    فتىً قلبه الصخر لا يهلع

    He sent his horsemen swooping like falcons

    And the friend in its orbit scattered, torn and beaten

  51. فقطَّ أنامله بالحسام

    موراً وجاء به يظلع

    Shattering the soldiers till no trace remained

    No path for them thereafter to follow or lead

  52. وأرسل فرسانه كالصقور

    والخليل في شوطها تمزع

    You were their food in both instances

    For them your Locale of Death indeed

  53. ومزَّق شملَ الجنودِ فما

    تَبَقّى لهم أثرٌ يتبع

    They left while you kept speaking of what

    Befell you, your spring flowed without deplete

  54. فكانوا طعامَك في الحالتين

    لهم وعليهم بكَ المصرع

    Tell me, will the departed return?

    Tell me, will the suckling infant be weaned?

  55. مضوا وبقيتَ تحدث عما

    أتوه فلم ينضبِ المنبع

    They say you will become a ruin tomorrow

    Though their lives are the most brief

  56. فقل لي هل يرجعُ الغائبون

    وقل لي هل يفطم المرضع

    I see the inanimate outliving

    The rational, so what can be gleaned?

  57. يقولون عنك غداً بلعاً

    على أن عمرهم البلقع

    In speech they lied and fabricated

    Envying what they vilified and demeaned

  58. أرى الجامداتِ أطول عمراً

    من العاقلات فما نصنع

    A radiant star pleased them

    A bountiful full moon brought them delight

  59. وأنهم في المقال افتروا

    بما لفقوه وما شنَّعوا

    But they left while their poet twisted the facts

    And their preacher ranted day and night

  60. وأعجبهم طالعٌ مشرقٌ

    وأعجبهم مورِقٌ مفرع

    What good amid life did they gain?

    While fate hastened without respite

  61. فراحوا وشاعرهم مفلقٌ

    لهم وخطيبهم مِصقع

    For all are doomed to ruin

    And memory clouds soon take flight

  62. فماذا أفاداهم في الحياة

    والدهر في سيره يسرع

    Abu Qir, you are the best company

    Your sermon most eloquent in my plight

  63. وكلهم في البلى صائرُ

    وذكرهم سُحُبٌ قشع

    Despite time’s injustice, you are still gardens

    Where the gentle breeze spreads its flight

  64. أبو قير أنت سمير الجليس

    ووعظك أبلغ ما يسمع

    Your skies are clear, your air restores youth

    Your sea, most beautiful in my sight

  65. ورغم العفاءِ أراك رياضاً

    تسير بها النسم الضُوَّع

    Your water, sweetest to drink

    Your fortress towers in might

  66. سماؤك صافيةٌ وهواكَ

    يعيد الشباب ويسترجع

    Does leap in you while gazelles frolic

    And the round moon shines so bright

  67. وبحرك أجملُ ما يجتلي

    وماؤك أعذبُ ما ينبع

    Doves coo, enjoying your shade

    And pearls glisten atop branches upright

  68. وحصنكَ عالٍ يرفُّ عليه

    لواءٌ هو الشرفُ الأَمنع

    They claim you will be ruins tomorrow

    Though their lives are the most brief

  69. فدم سارحاتٍ بكَ الظبياتُ

    ودم كاملاً بدُرك المُبدَعُ

    I see the inanimate outliving

    The rational, so what can be gleaned?

  70. ودم وارفاتٍ عليك الظلالُ

    وغُلَّةُ رائدها تنقع
