1. أطعتَ وخَالَفت الهَوى والتذكرا

    فكدَّرت عَيشاً صافياً فتكدَّرا

    You obeyed and went against desire and recollection

    So you troubled a serene living, and it became troubled

  2. على دنفٍ لو آثرَ العتبَ قلبُهُ

    وأوحشَهُ طُولُ الضنا ليُبصرا

    To a bosom, if his heart preferred blame

    And solitude made it desolate, so it could see

  3. ولكنَّه أمسى كئيباً متيماً

    ألحَّ عليهِ شوقُهُ فتحيرا

    But it spent the night gloomy and yearning

    Its longing insisted on it, so it became confused

  4. وطارَ من البينِ المشتِّ فؤادُهُ

    وقد كان من ذكرِ الفِراقِ تطيَّرا

    And its heart flew from the intermediate separation

    And it had become because of the memory of parting, birds
