عشتُ مستَهتِراً وعِشتَ سَليما
كيفَ ما كنتَ لا عدمتَ نَعيما
May you live carefree, and may you live safe and sound;
however you may be, may you never be bereft of bliss.
عَجبٌ أن تَكونَ يا حسنَ الوَج
هِ رَؤوفاً بعاشِقيكَ رَحيما
How strange that you should be, O fair—
—faced one, compassionate and merciful to your lovers.
بَدني ناحلٌ وأنتَ صَحيحٌ
إنما يرحمُ الصَّحيحُ السَّقيما
My body is gaunt, while you are hale;
for only the healthy have mercy on the sick.
عَلِمَ اللَه أنَّ طَرفي وَقلبي
لقِيا في هَواكَ أمراً عَظيما
God knows that my eye and my heart
have encountered, in loving you, a grievous ordeal.
