1. إن كنتَ لا تسمعُ الأنينا

    مني ولا تعرفُ الحنينا

    If you do not hear the moaning

    from me, nor recognize the yearning,

  2. فقد وحبيك عيلَ صبري

    وكم عسى الصبرُ أن يكونا

    then—by your beloved—my patience is exhausted;

    and how long can patience possibly endure?

  3. يا ضيفَ صبرٍ يجرُّ قلباً

    يكادُ لولاكَ أن يبينا

    O guest of a patience that pulls a heart onward,

    a heart that, but for you, would nearly break away—

  4. ما ذاقَ حسنَ العزاءِ شوقاً

    فكيفَ من فارقَ القرينا

    it has tasted no consolation, overcome by longing;

    then what of one parted from his companion?
