1. أضرَّ بطرفهِ السهدُ

    وأنحلَ جسمَهُ الكمَدُ

    The wakefulness has hurt his eyelid,

    And grief has wasted his body,

  2. وأقلقهُ من الزفراتِ

    والأحزانِ ما يجِدُ

    And sighs and sorrows disturb him,

    More than he can bear,

  3. يطيرُ فؤادُهُ شوقاً

    فتحبسهُ عليهِ يدُ

    His heart flies with yearning,

    But a hand holds it back,

  4. أما لضنى أضرَّ بِقل

    بهِ وبجسمهِ أمدُ

    Does the ardour of love not hurt

    A heart and a body without end?
