لا تكفُّ البكاءَ عيني فأقرا
إنَّ بين الكتابِ والعين سِترا
Do not cease your weeping, my eyes, so I may find solace
Between the book and the eye there is a veil
فأراني إذا تأملتُ شطراً
كتبت مقلتي بعينيَّ شطرا
So I make my eyes write a verse
Whenever I contemplate a line
وكفاها بأن ترى في كتابٍ
بمدادٍ سطراً وبالدمعِ سطرا
It suffices that in a book, with ink
I write a line, and with tears, a line
أنا أملي حروفهُ ودموعي
يتبعنَ الهوى ويشفينَ صدرا
I dictate the letters, and my tears
Follow desire and heal my heart
