1. اللَّهُ يَكْفِي المُلْكَ أشْأَمَ طَلْعَةٍ

    أضْحَتْ تُبَشِّرُهُ بِشَرِّ صَباحِ

    May God shield the king from the most ill-omened countenance—

    one that has come heralding to him a morning of evil:

  2. بَهَقٌ يَلُوحُ سَوادُهُ فِي صُفَْرٍة

    قَد كَرَّهَتْ نَظَرِي إِلَى اللُّفَّاحِ

    a skin affliction, its blackness showing amid yellow pallor,

    that has made the sight of apples hateful to me.

  3. شَقِيَتْ بِهِ الأَرْواحُ بَعدَ نَعِيمِهَا

    فَاقْتَصَّتِ الأَرْواحُ لِلأَرْواحِ

    Through him souls grew wretched after their bliss,

    so souls exacted requital for souls.
