وَصاحِبٍ زُرتُهُ فَقَدَّمَ لي
كِسرَةَ خُبزٍ وَعَينُهُ عَبرى
A friend who visited me
Brought some bread, tears in his eyes
وَقالَ ما تَشتَهي فَقُلتُ لَهُ
قَطرَةَ مِلحٍ وَكَسرَةً أُخرى
He asked what I wanted, I said
A grain of salt and more bread
فَمَزَّقَ الجَيبَ ثُمَّ لاكَمَني
وَقالَ هذا المُصيبَةُ الكُبرى
He tore his clothes and embraced me
Saying this was the greatest calamity
