1. Beauty dawned, and so I loosed my eyes

to delight in what is not mine.

  2. Your beauty exacted the prescribed penalty upon the eyes

for what I had imagined of it; and so they weep.

  3. So I chose to steal glances

at you whenever I attained the blessing of nearness to you,

  4. eager to preserve affection as long as I live,

though my heart should live as lament’s constant companion.

  5. You come, with yearning in my heart,

and what I turn away from you preoccupies me.

  6. This beauty of yours is a miser’s wealth,

while his neighbor is in torment and distress.

  7. The alms due on your beauty is to let the eyes

behold it, and thus the almsgiver’s wealth increases.

  8. Otherwise, do not display it to me,

even if solace—and my leaving—were an illusion.
