بعثت رسولي سائلاً نلتقي متى

أجابت متى يا صاح غاب كفيلي

نعيش على توراتها ورسولي

After the pilgrims prayed on Mount Arafat

ولا وصل إلا بسمةٌ أو إشارة

إذا لم يكن من رقبةٍ وعذول

No union comes but a smile or a glance

Unless it comes from a slender, supple neck

وما زالت الأحلام في الوصل رائدي

ورائدها حتى اهتدت لسبيلي

Dreams still lead me to meet her

Guiding me until I found my way

أطلت بعطفيها فأهلاً ومرحباً

بمنسية في حجر إسماعيل

With her kindness I'm welcomed and greeted

By a forgetful one in Ishmael's lap

وقلت ادخلي قالت وهل يضمن التقى

مبيتاً وكم عزناه وقت مقيل

I said enter but she said does a meeting ensure

A night's stay? How often we've missed it at bedtime

ترفقت لم أبغ اللجاج لأنني

خلقت لحب لا يشاب نبيل

I was gentle, sought no quarrel for I

Was created to love without fleck or stain

ولما زهتني طيشة الوجد والصبا

ضممت القوام اللدن ضم فضول

When the folly of passion and youth confused me

I clasped her waist, a soft, blind clasp

فما ملكتني غير خصرٍ مطوق

يهز كصيد في يمين بخيل

I could not possess her but by an encircled waist

That sways like prey in a miser's right hand

وإن أمكنتني من جبينٍ لثمته

فما أمكنتني من رضاب شمول

If I gained access to a kissable brow

No access was granted to all-embracing hugs

غللت وذلت كبريائي فليتني

من الشفة السفلى شفيت غليلي

I bound and humbled my pride, would that

From her lower lip I could heal my pain

أحطت إلا العتب منها ملفقاً

وإلا اعتذاري في هوان ذليل

I only gathered from her coy reproaches

And my apology in humiliating submission

والا دموعا يعلم اللَه سرها

لماذا جرت من زاملٍ لزميل

Or else tears whose secret Allah knows

Why did they flow from a boonmate to boonmate?

ليدهشني هذا البكاء ألم يكن

تأثر خل من لقاء خليل

Let these tears startle me, were they not

The effect of a meeting with an intimate friend?

فلا تكتميني الحب إن قرأته

وراء العيون الزرق عند مثولي

Then do not hide your love if you have divined it

Behind blue eyes when I come before you

أهندتني دهراً فلما فتنتني

جنيت دلالاً وانتظرت عويلي

You tantalized me an age, when you seduced me

I attained favors and awaited my undoing

أساءك مني قبلةٌ قد كفحتها

بلحظة فتنٍ من صبابة يل

An stolen kiss offended you though I battled it

With a glance of youthful charm from a fawn

يظل الفتى حرا إلى حين حوجه

لعطف جميل أو لكف بخيل

A boy stays free until the day he is confined

To kindness fair or a hand unkind
