Labor Saeed Canal

Between the two oceans stagnant

بين المحيطين جامد

Saeed prepared it

A harbor for every newcomer

سعيد هيأ منها

The water surrounds it

Like Mercury surrounds the sky

مغنى إلى كل وافد

That's why I loved

I, the resident watcher

يلفها الماء لفا

Except the maidens naked

Of every white breasted gazelle

لف السماء عطارد

Eastern in origin but

Western in beliefs

لذاك قد أعجبتني

Faces dried out

Mixed with chameleons

أنا النزيل المشاهد

This is from the blessings

And that is from the sea rising

إلا الصبايا عرايا

If the banks were necklaces

Then those are one of the treasures

من كل بيضاءَ ناهد

If the cities were pearls

Then they are among the precious

شرقية الجنس لكن

In it the Franks are a tribe

Enjoying the feasts

غربيةٌ في العقائد

In it the mosques are many

And few in it are the prayer rugs

وجوها من جفافٍ

A city of beauty

Its markets like festivals

ممازج للمهارد

Too small for its residents

So its homes are like schools

هذا من البرآت

On the roofs are cafés

Under the awnings temples

وذا من البحر صاعد

And in the shops dwellings

Husband, grandfather, and father

لو الشطوط عقود

Its workers are active

So you see none but the diligent

فتلك إحدى الخرائد

And they wear clothes

That aid effort

لو المدائن در

The pants on them

With shirt fastened

فإنها في الفرائد

Their heads brimmed

And they rolled up from black

فيها الفرنج قبيلٌ

Its nests are in rows

Laid on the pillows

ممتع بالموائد

Its fish craved

On the spit or in the stoves

فيها المصلى كثير

And everything to it

From God's blessings comes

وقل فيها المساج

Begging vanished in it

So each person struggles

مدينة ذات حسنٍ

Its fishing boats in it

Like frightened geese

أسواقها كالموالد

Above the lake birds

Flocks behind a leader

ضاقت على ساكنيها

Dive into the water at night

Upon the nets of traps

فدورها كالمعاهد

So people eat from it

Meat pure of origins

ففي السطوح قهاوي

And most delicious thing to eat

For the hostile foreigner

تحت البواكي معابد

In Egypt, land and sea

And for the guest benefits

وفي الحوانيت سكنى

Statue of Lesseps in it

As if a demon's body

زوج وجد ووالد

At the water meeting from it

A symbol for eternity

عمالها في نشاطٍ

It signals to the West come

To Egypt the people sleep

فلا ترى غير جاهد

Come and by ships pass

And err in the profits

ويلبسون ثياباً

Pass and of them reside

What's between them in the observatories

على الكفاح تساعد

So they orbited the Pleiades

While we above the pillows

فالبنطلون عليه القميص

Until the youth called out

For glory to breach the schemes

ماثم زائد

Maybe Egypt will meet

By their hands the goals

تبرنط الرأس منهم

Until my poetry flows

Honoring them with poems

وشمروا عن سواد

God will not let down a people

Who listen to the voice of the diligent

أعشاشها في صفوف

موضونة في المساند

أسماكها مشتهاة

في القرن أو في المواقد

وكل شيء إليها

من نعمة اللَه وارد

غاب التسول فيها

فكل شخص يجالد

مراكب الصيد فيها

كالوز خاف المطارد

فوق البحيرة طير

أسرابه خلف قائد

يهوى إلى الماء ليلاً

على شباك المصائد

فيأكل الناس منه

لحماً حلال الموارد

وأطيب الشي قوت

للأجنبي المعاند

في مصر بر وبحرٌ

وللدخيل الفوائد

تمثال دلسبس فيها

كأنه جسم مارد

في ملتقى الماء منه

رمزٌ إلى الن خالد

يشير للغرب هيا

لمصر فالشعب راقد

هيا وبالسفن مروا

وغالطوا في العوائد

مرو ومنهم مقيم

ما بينهم في المراصد

فحلقوا للثريا

ونحن فوق الوسائد

حتى تنادى شباب

للمجد يغزو المكائد

لعل مصر ستلقى

على يديه المقاصد

حتى يجود شعري

تكريمهم بالقصائد

لن يخذل اللَه شعباً

يصغى لصوت المجاهد
