رب أودعتني المعايير

للحسن في البشر

O Lord, you instilled in me the standards

For goodness in people

ثم هيأت لي الجميل

وبي الذوق والبصر

Then you made beauty available to me

And endowed me with taste and sight

ها فؤادي فراشةٌ

أبصر النارَ فاستعر

Oh my heart is a butterfly

That saw fire and caught flame

ولك الأمرُ فاهدلي

جامع الظرف في نفر

And the command is yours so guide me

Uniter of circumstance in adversity

ذاك قولٌ يقوله

من به الجب والقصر

That is what one says

Who has hardship and palaces

والذي من وليهِ

يطلب الشيء لا مفر

And the one whose Master

He seeks something there is no escape

قولُ طفلٍ لوالد

هاتِ يا والدي القمر

Words of a child to a parent

Give me, my father, the moon

فإذا لم يجئ له

باتَ في الغمِّ والسهر

So if it does not come to him

He spends the night in worry and wakefulness

رب إن كنت شئت لي

عصمةَ القلب والنظر

O Lord, if you wanted for me

Protection of heart and sight

إمسح الذوقَ في أو

وحد الحسنَ في الصور

Erase my taste in or

Unite beauty in forms

أأرى رب ما أرى

من جمالٍ ومِن حَوَر

Shall I see, O Lord, what I see

Of beauty and maidens

ثم أمضى كأنني

عنهُ في غفلةٍ حجر

Then go on as if I

Were oblivious to it like an inanimate rock

صورةٌ أعجبتك في

خلقها درةُ الدرر

An image you were pleased with in

Creating it, pearl of pearls

كيف لم أرضها ومن

لم يؤامن بها كفر

How could I not be pleased with it, and whoever

Does not believe in it commits blasphemy
