عادت كعود المدمن

ينوي السلو ولا يني

She returned like the addict's incense stick

He intends to quit but doesn't

تحنو على فهزني

لعناقها الشوق العريق

She leans towards me so I tremble

For her intimate longing embrace

ذكرى كذكر المؤمن

يحلو له في الموهن

Like the believer's memories

Sweet to him in weakness

إما يلازمه فني

أخذا بمأخذه الرفيق

Either it accompanies him, so I accompany

Taking the same path as my friend

فالسحر تنفثه المقل

والوجد يعبث بالأجل

So the magic blows from the writer

And passion disrupts fate

والقلب نومه الخبل

نوم الوسيط فلا يفيق

And the heart's stupor sleeps

The broker's sleep, never to awake

أنكرت في معالمي

وسبحت سبحة حالم

I denied my features

And prayed the prayer of a dreamer

من عالمي لعوالم

فيها لكل منى طريق

From my world to worlds

Where for each wish there's a path

وكأن جسمي ذرة

في الريح أو هو نفثة

My body was like a speck

In the wind or a breath

وتسلمتها نسمةٌ

تلج الأثير إلى الرفيق

Taken by a soft breeze

To the intimate companion in the ether

فرأيت شوقي شاديا

والروح صفا مصغيا

I saw my fervent passion

And the spirit listening closely

ومضى سناه حياليا

فصعقت من قدس البريق

Its years passed before me

So I swooned from the sacred brilliance

ورأيت أن أتقدما

فرهبته فتلثما

I saw I should move forward

But I feared so I was silent

وملكت جأشي بعدما

صوحت كالغصن الوريق

I restrained my ardour after

I raved like a delicate branch

حييته فتبسما

وسعى إلى فسلما

I greeted so it smiled

And hurried to so we reconciled

وطلبت أن يتكلما

ويعيد لي نظم العقيق

And I asked it to speak

And redo the poem of carnelian

قال انقضت لغة الدنى

فالحسن والحسنى هنا

It said the tongue of woes has passed

Beauty here and beauty

غير الذي في كوننا

كنا نصور يا صديق

Are not like our world

We imagined, O friend

خمر هنا ولها دبيب

خمر بلا دن تطيب

Wine here has a murmur

Wine with no baseness is sweet

فالروح عن جسمي غريب

من كل جارحة طليق

So the spirit is a stranger

Free from every limb

يسقى وليس له قدح

ويحس مثلك بالفرح

It drinks but has no cup

And feels joy like you

فإذا التمست له الشبح

لا غير شفاف رقيق

So if you seek its phantom

Only a delicate transparency

سر يشع له سناء

فاذا قبضت فكالهواء

A secret radiates its brilliance

So when you grasp it's like air

لا شيء لكن في بقاء

يخفى على الحي الغريق

Nothing, but in enduring

Hidden from the living drowned

در هنا لا دركم

والشعر ليس كشعركم

Knowledge here, not your knowledge

And poetry not like your poetry

والخلق غير خلاقكم

وشرابنا ذاك الرحيق

Creation not your creation

Our drink is that wine

الحور والولدان في

مشتاي أوفى المصيف

The houris and boys around me

In my best climate of summer

حولي وعذب القرقف

ينسى من الدنيا الحريق

Sweet and fine surroundings

Forget the burning world

وقف الحطيئة خادمي

والبحتري ملازمي

Al-Mutanabbi stands serving me

And al-Buhturi accompanies me

وأبو نواس منادمي

نتذاكر العهد العريق

Abu Nuwas and I socialize

Recalling old intimate times

ولقد أقيم ببرزخي

مع حافظ خير الأخ

And indeed with my limbo

Is Hafez, best company

ناسي على الشرق الرخى

ما زال في رق وضيق

Forgetting the east's ease

Still in hardship and distress

ودعاءُ قومي حفني

فظفرت بالنزل الهني

My people's prayer enveloped me

So I won the blissful lodging

ورضى من اللَه الغني

هذا هو الفوز الحقيق

And the Rich God's consent

This is the true triumph

فالشرق شرق سيد

وبمصر شعبٌ أيد

The east is the lord's east

With a people Egypt aids

والحر تأسره اليد

فأنا لهم ميتاً رفيق

And the free bound by hands

So dead I'm their friend

ارجع لقومك حيهم

عني وناد بحيهم

Return to your people, greet them

Forget me, and declare to their life

إني التمست لحيهم

إن مات منزلة تليق

I sought for their life

A fitting status if one dies

وإذا بشخص يجتلى

قومي بهذا المحفل

And then a figure appears

My people in this gathering

جزعن للمرتحل

جزع الصديق بكا الصديق

Agonize for the traveler

A friend's agony, the friend cries
