Your love, O Laila, intoxicates me
However much it hides, it returns
How can it hide when it's in my heart
And my ribs are its fuel
Its fire needs no sparks
The more intense, the more generous
The more I complain of it, the sweeter it becomes
The more I denounce it, the darker it grows
It has not led me to reject love
Nor made me envious
In it there is coolness and peace
In it, Islam and existence
In it a chalice of pure wine
From vines of roses
Every love but yours is for Satan
Effort and toil
But Satan from your love
Is sad and sullen
With you, my daydreams are sweet
And my loyalty to vows
You are my life and my faith
You are my days and eternity
You come to me at night
When all others sleep
You shine when I rise to pray
In prostration
An idea flashes meaning
That knows no bounds
Reason fails before it
And is frozen in awe
So when, O Laila's face
Will I behold you unveiled?
