الحلو لما انعَطف

أخجل جميع الغصون

When beauty leaned

All branches were abashed

والخد آه ما انأَطَف

وَرده بغير العيون

And the cheek - ah how it bent!

Its rose without eyes blushed

لما بدا لي الحبيب

يشبه لبدر التمام

When my beloved appeared

Resembling the full moon

صار الفؤاد في لهيب

في الحال وهام بالأَوام

My heart was set aflame

Immediately, enamored of eras

وحين رأى الحبّ فيه

زاد والغرام اشتَهر

And when love in him I saw

Increasing, passion flourished

من العذول السفيه

حاذر وعنّي أتَصَر

From foolish celibacy

Beware, and of me take heed

حبّيت أشوف لي سبب

أبني عليه الكلام

I wanted to find a reason

On which to build my words

لكن لإيت الطلب

بعيد وصعب المرام

But seeking came

Far, the goal difficult

إرحم يا سيد الملاح

مغرم ضناه البعاد

Have mercy, O lord of beauty

A lover whom distance has wronged

دمعه على الخد ساح

من حر نار الفؤاد

His tears on his cheek flowed

From the heat of his heart's fire

يلّي ابتَلَيت بالهوى

وصِرت مغرم أسير

O you who with love were afflicted

And became a captive lover

خلي اصطِبارك دوا

حتى يهون العسير

Let your patience be a cure

Until hardship is lightened

الحب حاله عجب

يلذ فيه العذاب

Love's state is wondrous

Torment is sweet in it

ذكر الحبيب فيه طرب

ودمع عينه شراب

Remembering the beloved is bliss

And tears are his drink
