    سُ مقرُّ العلومِ والعلماءِ

    What voice did I greet yesterday, O Paris

    The abode of science and scholars

  2. مَن تُرى ذلكَ الذي جمَّلَتهُ

    حِكمةُ الشَيبِ في رَبيع الفتاءِ

    Who can it be that old age adorned

    With the wisdom of grey hair in the spring of youth

  3. ذلك الأَسمرُ الذي بَهَرَ البي

    ضَ مُطِلّاً من مِنبَرِ الخُطَباءِ

    That dark skinned man who dazzled Beirut

    Preaching eloquently from the pulpit

  4. وَأماطَ اللِثامَ عن أدبِ العُر

    بِ كرامِ الآباءِ وَالأَنباءِ

    And unveiled the manners of the Arabs

    With the generosity of the ancestors and the news

  5. بِلِسانٍ ما اعتادَ من قبلُ أن يخ

    ضعَ إِلّا لِأَهلهِ من إباءِ

    With a tongue not accustomed before to bow

    Except to his folk out of dignity

  6. يا سجلَّ الخلود فَاِفسَح مجالاً

    لاسمهِ في صَحيفةِ الفُضلاءِ

    O register of immortality, make way

    For his name among the virtuous

  7. وَأرِ الأَعصُرَ الأَواتي أنَّ الذِ

    كرَ عُمرٌ محجَّلُ الآناءِ

    And show the ages that mention

    Is a life adorned by epochs

  8. ذاكَ صوتُ ابنِ بطرسٍ قَد عرفنا

    هُ بما هاجهُ من الأَصداءِ

    That is the voice of Ibn Batros we knew

    By how it stirred the echoes

  9. أَلق بالسَمعِ تَستَخِفَّك منه

    نَغمةٌ لم تكن لغيرِ الوَفاءِ

    A melody makes light of you

    That was not for any but the loyal

  10. ذاك نجمٌ أطلَعتِه أَنتِ يا مِص

    رُ فَقرّي بِنجمكِ الوُضّاء

    A star you brought out, O Egypt

    So overlay it with your shining star

  11. وَأحِلّيهِ حيث تفتقِد البَد

    رَ عيونُ السُراةِ في الظُلماء

    And place it where the sleepless

    Eyes of travelers seek in the darkness

  12. كم له دون بَيضةِ الشَرقِ من غَض

    بَةِ حُرٍّ وَكم له من بَلاءِ

    How much below the orient’s egg

    Is the anger of a freeman and how much is his ordeal

  13. كم له من مواقِفٍ هزَّ عِطفَ ال

    حقِّ فيها بِالحُجَّةِ البَيضاءِ

    How many stands where the kindness

    Of truth shook with the white argument

  14. إيه يَاِبنَ الأَمجادِ قُمتَ بِأَعبا

    ءِ كبارٍ وَالمجدُ ذو أَعباء

    O son of glories, you took on

    Great burdens and glory has burdens

  15. وَأَرَيتَ الأَنامَ بِرَّ ذوى القُر

    بى وَرَأيَ الكَريمِ في الكُرَماءِ

    And you showed people the righteousness of relatives

    And the view of the noble among the generous

  16. فَاِستَمِع ما يُقال حولكَ يا وا

    صِفُ ذا اليومَ من ضُروبِ الثَناء

    So listen to what is said around you

    Describing this day’s kinds of praise

  17. إنَّ من طيِّب الثناءِ لزَهراً

    تَجتَنيه مَسامِعُ الأَكفاء

    That the best praise is a flower

    Plucked by the ears of the capable
