1. The water of modesty has ebbed from every face,

So it has become grim on every side, a barren waste.

  2. And ingratitude has spread among people, until

Returning a greeting is almost reckoned kindness.

  3. Faces—as though you had strewn upon the

    Graves roses—if they display cheer.

  4. And lips that say 'Welcome'—yet if they voiced

What lies in the heart, they would say nothing good.

  5. I adjure you by God: is that a greeting of affection,

Or did the greeter have some purpose in mind?

  6. Have they gone blind to their path, or feigned blindness—

Nations bewildered in the wastes of ignorance?

  7. Their good fortune deceived them; yet fortune is wont

To favor for a day and forsake for an age.

  8. So they wronged the peoples and launched

One raid after another throughout the lands.

  9. In their ascent, they forgot the day of descent,

And descent is drawn to those whose fortune rises.

  10. The philosopher toiled among people for an age,

And religion governed their innermost thoughts for an age.

  11. Yet mankind is a pursuer confronting the pursued,

And an eagle spends the evening pursuing a falcon.

  12. And armies, some shattered by

Others; and great hills butt against smaller ones.

  13. Beware, O wolves, the onslaught of lions

With fangs stronger than yours and claws more piercing.

  14. Do not sleep, O lions, for some wolves

Have not slept, fiercer than the crouching beasts of the thickets.

  15. The nights are all lessons, and yet

Where is one who opens the book and reads?

  16. You are an excellent warner, O Halley's star!

Shake the plain and steadfast mountains with terror!

  17. Some people harbored conjectures about you and said:

"A mighty sign, sent to the earth!"

  18. If death is in your right hand, then hurl

It as blazing flame upon creatures, one and all!

  19. Have you received from the forsaker of the

Oppressor and protector of the weak, O star, a secret?

  20. Will you encompass everything, destroying

Every living being and leaving the plain rugged?

  21. Will noses be level tomorrow, so that no

People look askance at another people upon the earth?

  22. Tomorrow, shall we all be dust, with no dominion

Other than dust, on land and sea?

  23. Tomorrow, will struggle become an embrace

In prime matter, and the slave become free?

  24. If what they say is true, O star, then proclaim

What you have been commanded—tenfold salutations to you!
