1. Lo, O merchants of the age, is there among you a man

Who sells solace to those felled by cares?

  2. If a young man among you guides me to such a man,

I will bestow on him whatever he wishes as a reward.

  3. For in the community are people abiding beside a blaze,

Affliction melts them, morning and evening.

  4. The onlooker thinks them drunk with grief,

And so he weeps for him, in compassion and loyalty.

  5. If people's hearts were obedient to my will,

I would turn grief in some of them into joy.

  6. And if every tear-sore eye obeyed me,

Some of the bereaved would not melt away with weeping.

  7. And I would treat Ibrahim for what has befallen him

And suddenly assailed him, until he found healing.

  8. Losing you, Ismail, shook a towering peak,

And undermined a firmly rooted mountain, and caused pain.

  9. And destroyed great hopes that crumbled

Despite your sorrowing kin, into dust.

  10. Lo, the world is only dust, and its people

Are dust—and does dust weep for dust?

  11. Losing you, Ismail, devastated a family

That forced itself to show noble patience, out of modesty.

  12. And curtailed great hopes, as though they

Had never, throughout time, raised a banner over you.

  13. Upon your rain-watered grave, a greeting from me,

For it has embraced a verdant bough and youthful vigor.
