If your enemies wage war against you,
When your enemies wage war against you
and you fear the sudden attacks of those banded together,
And you fear the aggressors' first blows
then say, raising your voice like one who calls out
Say and call out to the One invoked
but finds neither supporter nor helper:
So no supporter or helper can be found
“Lend me a temple, O son of Ibrahim,
Lend me, O son of Abraham, protection
that I may plunge with it into the fray of those who slap.”
With which I enter the battle of the assailants
For if he has lent you what is hoped for,
For if He has lent you what you hoped for
you will see them fleeing before you,
You will see them fleeing before you
as the young slapper once fled
As the noble youth once fled
before the writer, son of writers,
Before the writer, son of writers
and left the tavern keeper there, presenting
Then the Lord of the Tavern poured
to the vanquished the victors’ cup,
For the defeated the cup of the victors
and envying that dearly cherished temple
And that ransomed protection was envied
for humbling the hands of those who strike.
For subduing the hands of the strikers
