1. O Egypt, follow in their footsteps, and take

Those stands in their most splendid forms.

  2. Let not what they said and what they wrote drive you to despair,

Among the people, to mislead and deceive.

  3. If they prevent the people from speaking, they have not prevented

Truth from voicing its grievance and making it known.

  4. Truth is too great to be dominated by

A hand, however long it persists in falsehood.

  5. God has never unjustly forsaken a nation that has followed

A path toward glory, with Him as its guide.

  6. So emulate the great nation, which has mounted

The back of glory, with earnest striving as its camel-driver.

  7. It held together, though scattered, and so stood as one

In purpose, when it saw its enemies were many.

  8. O emblem of glory, will you not descend—as

You descended there—upon Egypt and her people,

  9. So that she may trail skirts of yours, once trailed

Before us by the Turks in their homelands, in pride?

  10. O Abdin, today you are indeed its source,

And in your shelter, by God’s leave, is its inspirer.
