Set aside the cup of passion; I have been given drink
Pour me a cup of love, for I have been
Of the wine of forgetting, until I drank my fill.
Given to drink of gentle rapture, till I'm filled.
The cupbearer of solace kept plying
Still the cupbearer of consolation gives me to drink,
Me with cups after which I never thirsted.
Cup after cup, whence senses reel and flow.
O you arrogant one, lording it over us!
O wanderer who has found his way to us,
Woe to you! Tell me who you are; I have forgotten.
Speak, who are you? For I've forgotten quite.
Even if you paved the road with pearls so I might step
If you would carpet the road with pearls
Upon it toward your house, I would not consent.
Leading to your house, I would not be pleased.
I have no need for it to be said, 'So-and-so
I'm too proud for it to be said that someone
And so-and-so exchanged visits'—as long as I live.
And someone visit while I breathe and live.
