لَقَد حَسُنتَ بِهِ اليَومَ المَراثي

كَما حَسُنتَ بِهِ أَمسِ الأَهاجي

You have composed fine elegies today,

As you composed passionate songs yesterday.

وَلَكِن لَجَّ في شَتمِ البَرايا

وكانَ القَتلُ عاقِبَةَ اللُجاجِ

But you went too far in insulting the innocent,

And killing was the consequence of stubbornness.
